Abstract

Communication media have under-gone profound transformations since the emergence of the Internet in the 1990s, the rise of social media in the 2000s, and the launch of YouTube in 2005. By the 2010s, digital media had become firmly established as the dominant mode of communication and content consumption (Han, 2024). Several critical shifts can be identified as a result of the rise of new media. First, the role of professional media institutions as “gatekeepers” has significantly diminished. Users themselves have increasingly become the new “gatekeepers” of information (Rianto, 2016). Second, the long-standing idea of the active audience found its most radical expression in the digital media era (Rianto, 2016), characterized by the principles of interactivity and participation inherent in user-generated content (Lister et al., 2009). This participatory turn has blurred the boundaries between professional and user-generated content (Yu et al., 2024).

Abstract

Campus journalism serves as an essential platform for the student body, amplifying their concerns, aspirations, and perspectives. This qualitative study explored the practices and achievements of campus journalists, recognizing their role as pivotal conduits for student expression and coverage of campus issues. Through semi-structured interviews with six campus journalists at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in the Philippines, including the student publication, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), and the College of Teacher Education (CTE), participants were selected using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews from July to September 2023 and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. The study uncovered two overarching themes. The first research objective revealed three sub-themes: multi-sourcing, exploration, and engagement, which together form the grand theme of the Adaptiveness of Campus Journalists. These findings reflect the dynamic nature of campus journalists, emphasizing that they are active contributors to their campus. The second research objective uncovers three sub-themes: winning competitions, agenda-setting, and personal satisfaction, leading to the grand theme of Campus Journalism as Empowerment. These themes highlight the achievements of campus journalists in competitive areas, their impact, and the personal fulfillment of their practices. The findings of this study underscore the adaptive and empowering nature of campus journalism, reflecting its significant impact on both the journalists and the publications they serve.

Abstract

Public participation is a critical component of elections, which function as indicators of state continuity. This study examines public participation and preferences for social media use during the 2024 general election in Sambirejo village. A qualitative descriptive-exploratory methodology was utilized, with data collected through observation, focus group discussions (FGDs), and interviews. Fifteen informants were purposively selected, representing youth, women, men, the village head and staff, and KPPS officers. The findings indicate that the Sambirejo community actively participated in the election, with nearly all eligible voters exercising their right to vote. This active engagement is attributed to factors such as local community characteristics, the village head's participatory leadership style, and KPPS outreach initiatives. Additionally, sa was identified as a significant source of election information; however, FGDs revealed that it is primarily used as a supplementary reference rather than the sole determinant of political decisions.

Abstract

This study explores how communication within social networksmediates access to resources and entrepreneurial success among people with disabilities. Moving beyond resource-based perspectives that emphasize financial capital, the research applies a communicative–relational framework integrating social capital theory and communication theory of resilience. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach using the Analytic Hierarchy Process with five expert informants to identify and prioritize key factors affecting business performance among disabled micro-entrepreneurs in Indonesia. Results reveal that while financial resources remain foundational, their impact depends heavily on communicative linkages across disability support organizations, mentorship structures, and community networks. Social network communication serves as a mediating mechanism that converts tangible resources into adaptive capacity, innovation, and social recognition. The findings underscore the need for inclusive entrepreneurship programs that enhance both resource accessibility and communicative competence, positioning communication as a form of social capital essential for sustainable development.

Abstract

Developments in information technology and social media have transformed the way tourism destinations are recognized and promoted. Tourists' digital activities, such as uploading photos, videos, and reviews on various platforms, play a crucial role in increasing destination awareness and image. This is also true for tourism at the Lok Baintan floating market. Optimizing digital power is crucial to strengthening the floating market's presence and appeal as a unique tourist destination. This study aims to analyze the digital tourism communication model in increasing tourism awareness at the Lok Baintan Floating Market. A descriptive qualitative method with a constructivist paradigm was applied in this study. The resulting digital tourism communication model is based on the AISAS (Attention, Interest, Search, Action, Share) concept, which is expected to provide input and advance tourism at the Lok Baintan Floating Market.

Abstract

This study examines Yogyakarta short films construction on local cultural values through narrative structure using a qualitative narratological approach based on Tzvetan Todorov’s model. Analyzing 21 province government-funded short films, the study focuses on protagonists, conflict, and resolution as key narrative elements. The findings show that these films consistently position wong cilik as protagonists whose conflicts arise from everyday social relations, including family obligations, economic constraints, and community dynamics. Disruptions are typically externally driven, while resolution is achieved through restraint, negotiation, and relational adjustment rather than confrontation. This produces a non-confrontational narrative strategy, often expressed through open-ended endings that emphasize reflection and social equilibrium. These patterns are reinforced by minimal dialogue, silence, non-professional actors, and slow pacing. Together, these elements demonstrate non-confrontational storytelling operates as the primary narrative structure.

Abstract

Public relations (PR) plays a crucial role in shaping a positive organizational image and fostering constructive relationships with the public. This study analyzes the PR strategy of the West Java Prosperous Justice Party Regional Leadership Council (DPW PKS) in establishing symmetrical two-way communication with the public. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and a case study method, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and documentation analysis, then examined thematically. Findings reveal that DPW PKS’s PR effectively bridges the party and the public by promoting transparency, inclusive dialogue, and participatory engagement. Proactive issue management and rapid responses to disinformation sustain the party’s reputation amid dynamic political contexts. Internally, cohesive communication and member welfare reinforce integrity, while externally, collaboration with media, government, and communities enhances credibility and long-term public trust in digital democracy. Abstract

This study presents CILLCO (Corpus of Indonesian Language, Linguistics, and Communities), a digital corpus designed to document and analyze vernacular language varieties in everyday and digital contexts. Jointly established by the Research Center for Language, Literature, and Community at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in collaboration with the English Department of Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), CILLCO addresses the historical gap between the national standard language (Bahasa Indonesia baku) and its vernacular varieties at the interpersonal, media, and online levels across the Indonesian archipelago. While most existing Indonesian corpora focus on written and formal language, CILLCO focuses on naturally occurring communication, capturing data such as WhatsApp exchanges and everyday conversations. As such, CILLCO functions as a linguistic and communicative resource platform, providing researchers with empirical materials to examine how meaning is made, identities are negotiated, and social relations are enacted in the hybrid spaces of spoken and digital communication. The corpus incorporates multimodal sources, including spoken discourse, social media interactions, online conversations, web documents and comments, transcribed interviews, and regional narratives, all encoded through sophisticated annotation and retrieval tools. By embedding CILLCO within current work in corpus linguistics, communication research, and digital ethnography, this study demonstrates the corpus's potential to advance interdisciplinary investigation into language use, digital discourse, and sociocultural change in Indonesia. CILLCO offers a solid empirical foundation for analyzing communicative practices in Southeast Asia, contributing to decentered, corpus-driven communication research. Ultimately, it sheds light on how digital vernacular communication reshapes the linguistic landscapes and communicative identities of Indonesian speakers in an era of rapid digital transformation.

Abstract

The development of football community media in Indonesia reveals an interesting phenomenon: it is the leading choice for football fans to obtain information and news. Building on the development of football community media in Indonesia, this study examines the conditions, challenges, and problems faced by such media in 2022 - 2025. Five community media are the focus of this research: Ongisnade, Simamaung, Football Fandom, Sleman Football, and Emosi Jiwaku—data collection through interviews and document study. The results showed that the development of football community media in Indonesia occurred during the digital media era. The ease of producing and distributing media has encouraged the establishment of a football community media. The emergence of football community media in Indonesia is rooted in the demand for information and news about clubs. The problems faced by the football community media include securing funding to ensure sustainability, managing and filling content with human resources, and the critical attitude shown in reporting on clubs, which can trigger bad relations with club management. The football community's media showcases the rise of well-informed football fans. Football fans' ability to manage the media within the football community demonstrates that they in Indonesia have transformed, becoming well-educated and informed.
