Abstract

The incidence of stunting in Indonesia remains a major public health concern. Child, parent, household, neighborhood, and community characteristics and factors were strongly associated with the incidence of stunting. Stunting not only affects children's physical growth but also has a direct impact on cognitive development and future learning ability. Bulurejo Village, Wonogiri, is a rural area facing serious challenges related to nutrition and stunting of children. In general, the goal of this program is to raise awareness of the importance of early screening and stunting prevention in Bulurejo Village and to improve the community's knowledge of balanced nutrition and child health practices. Therefore, they can implement community-based stunting prevention measures. The program included exploration as a stunting screening effort and continued with community empowerment through community education and counseling activities. Overall, the total number of toddlers measured in the screening process was 104 out of 107 toddlers (98%) in seven hamlets, which shows an STD% stunting incidence rate of 13.4% in the July 2024 measurement period. The results of community counseling evaluated using the pretest and posttest showed an increase in knowledge from 30% of participants who knew stunting to 75% after counseling. Health promotion is the initial and main stage of the stunting prevention process in Bulurejo Village. Community-based empowerment has been proven to be an effective method for increasing community knowledge, especially regarding stunting. This program successfully explored the problem of stunting and empowering communities through education and training. The program is expected to continue and expand by involving more community members and the capacity of health cadres.

Abstract

There are approximately 22.97 million persons with disabilities in Indonesia, including 7,358 in Bogor Regency, of whom 1,457 have intellectual disabilities and 859 have mental disabilities. Rumah Azaki, a social welfare institution in Bogor Regency, faces challenges in facilitating individuals with disabilities to develop self-care skills and social competencies. The Independent Pilot program was designed to address these issues by enhancing self-care abilities in daily activities, optimizing comprehension of simple instructions, improving cognitive skills, and developing fine motor and social interaction skills through a horticultural therapy approach. The program was implemented in four stages: Problem identification, preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. The implementation phase consisted of five key activities: independent pilot journeys, acceptance pilots, creativity pilots, hydroponic days, and exhibition pilots. The results demonstrated significant improvements in self-care skills (eating, drinking, and tidying up), cognitive abilities, and understanding of simple instructions through the Independent Island board game, as well as fine motor skills and social interaction through horticultural activities such as planting, maintaining, and harvesting hydroponic plants. Participants with intellectual disabilities showed up to 80% improvement in planting and plant care activities, whereas those with mental disabilities improved by up to 40%. Thus, the Independent Pilot program has proven effective in enhancing the self-development, instruction comprehension, and motor skill proficiency of individuals with disabilities. This success was achieved through close collaboration between academia, the community, the government, and the media. This program can be adapted and implemented in other regions to further support the self-development and social skills of people with disabilities.

Abstract

Private forests cultivated using agroforestry systems have the potential to produce timber, non-timber forest products, and a variety of agricultural crops. However, such forests are still being managed in a traditional manner, both in terms of cultivation techniques and management. The Service activities of the Dosen Pulang Kampung Program specifically aimed to introduce an innovative tree felling technique called the sandat technique, which minimizes the risk of damage to understory vegetation. The method used in this program is service learning, which integrates academic learning with community service through training sessions (both theoretical and practical). The results show that community forest farmers and loggers have understood this technique, recognizing it as a newly introduced method that they find highly beneficial and are eager to adopt in their forest-management practices. Consequently, they expressed their intention to adopt it for managing community forests. This innovation has started to demonstrate increased knowledge, a shift in attitudes (towards adoption), and satisfaction with the program itself. The Sandat Technique is thus critical to becoming a policy in community forest management and should be disseminated by the forestry office/branch to community forest farmers for adoption in the future.

Abstract

The development of waqf practices implemented so far has become very diverse. However, many people still think that the practice of waqf is limited to the management of 3M (tombs, mosques, and madrasas). Mekarjaya Village has great waqf potential, but its utilization has not been optimally realized because of the limited knowledge of its community. The Kampung Wakaf educational program was organized with the participation of 60 participants, who were the guardians of students from Madrasah At-Tarbiyah, one of the village's waqf assets, aimed at broadening the community's understanding and awareness of the concept and innovative utilization of waqf. The educational activity was conducted in one day, consisting of a material presentation session by the speakers and a discussion and Q&A session before the event was concluded. The result obtained was an increase in the community's knowledge regarding the basic concepts of waqf and its utilization, which was assessed through pre-tests and post-tests conducted at the beginning and end of the activity. Education is expected to support the development of village waqf utilization in a more comprehensive and innovative manner.

Abstract

Lebbek Village is located in Pakong Sub-District, Pamekasan Regency, Madura, where the majority of the residents work as farmers. The village has an agricultural area of approximately 35,708 hectares. The cultivation of trees or perennial crops has become the preferred choice among the local community, as it not only creates a greener environment but also provides additional sources of income. One promising tree species for development in this area is durian. However, durian cultivation in Lebbek Village has generally been carried out without proper consideration of planting seasons, planting hole preparation, or sufficient knowledge of durian cultivation techniques. This program aimed to provide the local community with knowledge and understanding of best practices for planting and maintaining durian trees. The community engagement activities included educational sessions and hands-on training, followed by the distribution of questionnaires to assess the effectiveness of the outreach and training programs. Based on observations, the training activities were proven to deliver benefits and increase participants' knowledge. Questionnaire analysis showed a 55% improvement in participants' understanding compared to their initial knowledge before the training. Additionally, 67.5% of participants expressed agreement and satisfaction with the activities provided, with more than 15 individuals actively engaged in discussions and practical sessions on durian planting techniques. Collaboration with educational institutions and research organizations is recommended to provide advanced training and continuous innovation in durian cultivation as part of a sustainable development effort.

Abstract

Takalar Regency is a region in South Sulawesi Province where rice is the leading agricultural commodity, surpassing other crops such as corn, tubers, and legumes. Along with the rising incidence of degenerative diseases particularly diabetes mellitus (DM), which is suspected to be linked to excessive consumption of high glycemic rice public awareness of choosing healthier rice options has increased. One of the innovations currently being developed to address this issue is parboiling technology, which can reduce the glycemic index (GI) of rice. In addition to its health benefits, parboiled rice also holds high economic value and has the potential to empower local rice farmers and traders. This activity aimed to educate the community on the benefits of consuming parboiled rice and to provide hands-on training in its production. The method used involved both counseling and practical training sessions, conducted in Tala Village, Sombalabella Subdistrict, Pattalassang District, Takalar Regency. The participants consisted of 40 women who are farmers and rice traders, economically unproductive at the time. The program was delivered in two sessions: a material presentation and practical training. Based on the participants’ questionnaire responses, knowledge about parboiled rice increased significantly from only 47% awareness before the activity to 100% afterward. In terms of skills, none of the participants initially knew how to make parboiled rice, but after the training, 90% were able to do it independently. The conclusion of this activity is that the counseling and training on the utilization of parboiling technology can broaden the community's knowledge and enhance their skills in producing parboiled rice.
