Abstract

Comprehending the factors that lead to public speaking anxiety is crucial; this includes gender distinction. This research was aimed at examining the levels of students' English public speaking anxiety in the context of their gender differences. This study included 63 (21 males and 42 females) English Language Education Study Program students from one of the state universities in North Sumatra. To examine this phenomenon in its natural environment, a mixing technique was used. An examination of records was utilized to collect the required data. The data was then analyzed in two distinct ways: a statistical calculation was performed on the results of 17-question student questionnaires on their level of public speaking anxiety, and a constructive analysis was performed by comparing the responses of various respondents. On average, male participants in this study reported lower levels of anxiety than female ones. The difference between 50.52 and 57.14 is substantial. “I am anxious that I will embarrass myself in front of the audience,” “I am anxious before speaking,” and “I am worried that my audience will think I am a poor speaker” are the areas where female respondents are more anxious than male. It is necessary to do more research with a bigger number and variety of respondents.

Abstract

The establishment and growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has sparked tremendous interest in the field of writing skills, as AI writing tools have the potential to assist humans in creating and refining text. The availability of these tools may lead to a reliance on AI in writing, which raises concerns about the potential degradation of writing skills. To that extent, will the writing skill session in English proficiency tests (e.g: TOEFL, IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEIC) be displaced? Utilizing a phenomenological case study, the researcher interviews four experienced test administrators in North Sumatera, Indonesia, to explore their perspective regarding to the impact of AI writing tools on the applications of writing tests in English proficiency tests. Various insightful perspectives are elaborated by the participants, implicating the future of English writing proficiency tests in the age of AI. However, in case this study is conducted in Indonesia and only involves four test administrators, a wider scale of research is needed to further investigate the potential impact of AI writing tools on writing skills across various contexts and languages.

Abstract

ABSTRACTAlthough many studies have been conducted to investigate how graduate students navigate the publication endeavor as a graduation requirement, a scant number have explicitly focused on how Master's students manage to do so through their participation in a community of practice (CoP). This study set out to bridge this gap by examining the transformation experienced by Indonesian Master's students of English education in terms of their knowledge and practice in writing for scholarly publication after joining a writing group. This study employed a qualitative, descriptive case study approach. Data were collected through a questionnaire, in-depth interviews, and artifact analysis from 15 students and analyzed using Content Analysis. Findings indicate that after joining the writing group, the students reported increased skills in writing scholarly articles and more knowledge of the publication process. This study suggests the establishment of communities of writing practice in graduate programs to assist students in addressing the mounting pressure of scholarly publication, either as degree conferment or career preparation and advancement. How to Cite: Fithriani, R., Rahman Hz, B.I., Kurniati, E.Y. Abstract

Each individual possesses a distinct essence that sets them apart, even in the case of identical twins. In language acquisition, learners’ personality type has emerged as one of the most determining constructions for students’ learning strategy. Through a phenomenological case study, intricate interplay between personality types and language learning strategies of two Indonesian identical twin girls studying English language education were investigated, supported by one triangulator participant. By employing the Oxford (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning and the MBTI test, the researchers gathered the extensive data on their language learning strategy distinctions and personality differences. The results indicate that despite sharing the same upbringing, their diverse personalities - one an ENFJ and the other an ENTJ - have contributed to vastly different cognitive, memorization, compensation, metacognitive, social learning, and affective learning approaches. The findings provide intriguing insights into the intricacies of language acquisition and highlight the significance of individual differences in shaping the learning styles.

Technological advancements have significantly influenced language learning, making it more interactive and accessible. The Speakia app, used by over fifty million users since 2021, offers a virtual environment for practicing English through immersive daily activities. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Speakia in improving vocabulary, its advantages, disadvantages, and the motivational impact on students. A qualitative case study methodology was employed, involving 25 purposively selected junior high school students. Data was collected through adapted questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analysis of the questionnaires provided insights into students' perceptions, while qualitative analysis of interviews offered an in-depth understanding of their experiences. Results indicate that students generally find Speakia easy to use and effective in enhancing vocabulary. The app's interactive features, quizzes, and real-time pronunciation feedback are highly appreciated. However, challenges such as the need for premium accounts for advanced levels and reliable internet access were noted as significant barriers. Despite these drawbacks, students reported increased motivation and active engagement in learning English through the app.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the professional identity of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) pre-service teachers in Indonesia after the government announced that no new public servants would be accepted for lecturer and teacher positions starting in 2022. The study involved 153 students from an English language education program at a public university in North Sumatra province. Data was collected through closed-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The information was analyzed using statistical methods for quantitative data and content analysis for qualitative data. The findings revealed that 48% of the respondents had chosen to become civil servant teachers, and 76.60% of those intending to be civil servant teachers preferred to work as Government Employees with Work Agreements (PPKK) teachers in the future. Numerous rationales and suggestions to remain being professional teachers are then discussed and established.
