Abstract

This study explores the implementation of the Speakia application in enhancing English vocabulary among junior high school students from their perspective. Technological advancements have significantly influenced language learning, making it more interactive and accessible. The Speakia app, used by over fifty million users since 2021, offers a virtual environment for practicing English through immersive daily activities. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Speakia in improving vocabulary, its advantages, disadvantages, and the motivational impact on students. A qualitative case study methodology was employed, involving 25 purposively selected junior high school students. Data was collected through adapted questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analysis of the questionnaires provided insights into students' perceptions, while qualitative analysis of interviews offered an in-depth understanding of their experiences. Results indicate that students generally find Speakia easy to use and effective in enhancing vocabulary. The app's interactive features, quizzes, and real-time pronunciation feedback are highly appreciated. However, challenges such as the need for premium accounts for advanced levels and reliable internet access were noted as significant barriers. Despite these drawbacks, students reported increased motivation and active engagement in learning English through the app.

Abstract

This study intends to examine how junior high school students see the use of the Lola Speak application to enhance their English speaking abilities. Students' subjective experiences were investigated using a qualitative approach and a case study methodology. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used to gather information from 24 first-graders at a Medan junior high school. Ten closed-ended statements that assessed the application's usefulness, simplicity of use, and effect on students' confidence in their ability to speak English made up the questionnaire. The majority of pupils gave the application positive feedback, according to the data. Up to 66.7% of students concurred that the application's speaking practice feature enhanced their ability to communicate, and 58.3% said that using it increased their confidence when speaking English. The application was also thought to be engaging, user-friendly, and capable of boosting motivation for learning. Some students, however, claimed that in order to better accommodate different learning styles, more features were required and that there were technical limitations. The study's findings emphasize how critical it is to create application-based learning tools that are more flexible and sensitive to user requirements.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has enhanced educational quality and teacher professionalism via teacher certification. This research investigates the professional identity of Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers, who have not been certified, and how they perceive their teaching career and professionalism. This research employs a qualitative case study design to explore the reflective practices of ten teachers who do not possess certification (or have not undergone a certification program). The data collection involved two primary methods: a modified questionnaire comprising six aspects of teacher professional identity and semi-structured interviews. The research findings suggest a tough professional identity beyond formal credentials, particularly the satisfaction and fulfilment of teachers without certification. Collaborative initiatives between the government, educational institutions, and relevant stakeholders are suggested to create a more conducive and rewarding teacher environment.

Abstract

Reflective journals could encourage students to develop the habit of writing regularly and hone students' critical thinking skills since they will start investigating their explanation and put all of the ideas into writing in their own words. This study was aimed to determine the types of errors written by an EFL student in her reflective journal writing on her blog account, the manner in which the EFL student generated errors, and the sensible reasons that affected the EFL student in producing her reflective journal writing errors. This study was classified as a qualitative content analysis. The data for this research came from ten reflective journal entries by an EFL student on her blogging account. Purposive sampling was used to collect the data. Furthermore, the researcher discovered five distinct sorts of errors in an EFL student's reflective journal writing on her online blogging platform. They included errors in time, omission errors, insertion errors, parts of speech errors, and other errors. Basically, the average number of errors actually happened unintentionally; the EFL student committed errors by omitting, adding, and disordering certain words while constructing sentences. Numerous variables contributed to the incidence of errors, including interlingua and intralingua transfer, a lack of vocabulary, and the use of ineffective translation methods.

Abstract

This study is aimed to assess the efficacy of employing local storytelling to enhance the speaking skills of grade XII students in an English language classroom, involving 18 participants from a Pivate School in Medan. Utilizing the action research method, the study implemented two intervention cycles centered on local stories, namely "The Legend of Malin Kundang" and "The Origin of Lake Toba." Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to evaluate fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Surprisingly, results indicated a decline in speaking scores across both cycles, falling short of the target score of 75. Despite attempts to engage students through storytelling, challenges like insufficient participation, attention, and confidence impeded the intervention's effectiveness. This highlights the need for supplementary strategies beyond storytelling to enhance speaking skills effectively. The findings contrast with prior research advocating for storytelling's efficacy in improving speaking skills, necessitating the exploration of alternative approaches such as interviews and group discussions. Acknowledging limitations, the study underscores the necessity for broader, more diverse research samples to generalize findings across educational contexts.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely used in the field of translation in recent years. However, the use of AI in translation has been limited due to its limitations in handling cultural nuances, implicit meanings, and complex language structures. This study aims to analyse the meta-language awareness of English Language Education students in conducting critical analysis of translation since the emergence of AI. In addition, this study explores how students assess the accuracy and bias in AI translation results and the extent to which they are able to correct or improve the translation independently. This case study focuses on students' perspectives and viewpoints in understanding, evaluating, and critiquing the translation results produced by AI and how their critical analysis skills develop in the context of translation. The findings highlight that AI can serve as a valuable tool, but it should not be solely relied upon for tasks requiring deep linguistic understanding, particularly in academic, professional, and cross-cultural communication settings.

Abstract

This study examined the students’ perception on the utilization of BeeSpeaker application in improving intermediate EFL students' speaking skills at Junior High School in North Sumatera. Using case study with 30 students, data was collected through interviews, questionnaire, then analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis framework. Five key themes emerged: enhanced pronunciation through AI feedback, increased speaking confidence, improved learner autonomy, personalized learning experiences, and sustained motivation via gamification. Results showed that the majority of students strongly believed the app helped them with pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and confidence. In addition, BeeSpeaker provided them with repeated opportunities for practice, immediate corrective feedback, and a safe space to overcome speaking anxiety. Thematic analysis further highlighted five core areas of improvement—better pronunciation accuracy, stronger self-confidence, wider vocabulary mastery, lower levels of speaking anxiety, and the app’s role as a supportive supplement to classroom learning. Together, these findings provide solid evidence that BeeSpeaker is not only useful but also highly effective in enhancing language learning outcomes.
