Abstract

The electric current magnitude is a fundamental parameter that directly affects penetration characteristics and weld bead geometry. This study analyzes the effect of current variations on physical and mechanical properties in the cladding process using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) method. The materials used are low-carbon steel and HV-600 electrodes with a diameter of 3.2 mm. The SMAW method was applied with current variations of 100 A, 120 A, 140 A, and 160 A. The tests carried out were NDT liquid penetrant, macro structure, micro structure and Vickers hardness. The results indicate a positive correlation between increasing current and hardness values in the weld area, with the highest hardness recorded at 665.803 HVN at 160 A and the lowest at 515.143 HVN at 100 A. Meanwhile, in the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), a non-linear pattern was observed, with a maximum hardness of 263.237 HVN at 120 A and a minimum of 219.110 HVN at 140 A. Microstructural analysis revealed the formation of ferrite, pearlite, bainite, and martensite phases in the weld area, providing insights into optimizing welding parameters to enhance the mechanical properties of low-carbon steel cladding.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to introduce the laboratory environment and facilities of the Mechanical Engineering Study Program at Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA) to students of SMKN 1 Raman Utara, East Lampung. The activity was conducted in the form of a campus visit involving 62 12th-grade students from the Light Vehicle Engineering Department. The agenda included a presentation on higher education opportunities, interactive discussions, a Q&A session, and a direct tour of ITERA’s Mechanical Engineering laboratories, including the Materials Engineering, Energy Conversion, Fabrication, Manufacturing, Internal Combustion Engines, and Foundry laboratories. This activity was designed to inspire students to pursue higher education and broaden their understanding of engineering fields. The outcome showed a high level of enthusiasm among the students and successfully achieved the goal of introducing campus life and technological exposure. This initiative is expected to serve as an initial step in strengthening synergy between vocational high schools and higher education institutions.

Abstract

Alkali treatment using NaOH solution aims to to enhance the mechanical strength of the composite. This study investigates the effect of varying immersion durations of vetiver root fibers in a NaOH solution on the tensile strength of polyurethane-based composites. The vetiver fibers, serving as reinforcement, were cut to a length of 3 cm and immersed in a 5% NaOH solution for 2, 3, 4, and 5 hours, along with a control group without treatment. After soaking, the fibers were rinsed until reaching neutral pH and dried for three days. The composites were fabricated using the compression molding method under a pressure of 5 bar for 24 hours. Tensile tests were conducted following ASTM D638 standards. The results indicate that alkali treatment affected the surface characteristics of the fibers, including cleanliness and structural changes. The maximum tensile strength of 1.592 MPa was achieved with a 4-hour immersion, whereas the lowest tensile strength of 0.893 MPa was recorded after 5 hours of soaking.

Abstract

Corrective maintenance merupakan langkah perawatan yang dilakukan setelah terjadinya kerusakan, salah satunya pada komponen bogie pada Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE). Kerusakan bogie dapat mengganggu sistem gerak dan menghentikan operasional alat berat secara keseluruhan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi penyebab kerusakan bogie dan menjelaskan tahapan perawatan korektif yang dilakukan. Metode yang digunakan meliputi observasi lapangan, inspeksi visual, pembongkaran, hingga pemasangan ulang bogie hasil reparasi. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa keausan signifikan pada diameter luar roda bogie disebabkan oleh penggunaan material yang tidak sesuai standar pada proses perbaikan sebelumnya, seperti logam dengan tingkat kekerasan rendah yang mudah aus saat menanggung beban berat dan gesekan terus-menerus. Selain itu, pelumasan yang tidak memadai mempercepat keausan pada permukaan roda. Ketidaksesuaian tersebut menyebabkan gangguan pada kestabilan gerak bogie dan potensi kecelakaan kerja. Proses perawatan korektif yang dilakukan berhasil mengembalikan fungsi bogie secara normal. Temuan ini menegaskan pentingnya pemilihan material yang tepat dan pelumasan yang sesuai dalam mendukung keandalan dan keselamatan operasional alat berat di lingkungan tambang.

Abstract

Ball valve merupakan salah satu jenis katup yang banyak digunakan dalam sistem perpipaan gas untuk Ball valve merupakan salah satu jenis katup yang banyak digunakan dalam sistem perpipaan gas karena kemampuannya dalam mengontrol aliran fluida dengan cepat dan efisien. Namun, seiring waktu, ball valve dapat mengalami penurunan performa akibat gesekan, kontaminasi, serta paparan lingkungan yang dapat menyebabkan korosi dan kebocoran. Oleh karena itu, pemeliharaan preventif diperlukan untuk memastikan keandalan dan umur pakai ball valve tetap optimal. Salah satu metode pemeliharaan yang efektif adalah greasing, yaitu pemberian pelumas khusus ke dalam ball valve untuk mengurangi gesekan antar komponen, mencegah korosi, serta memastikan kinerja segel tetap optimal. Penelitian ini membahas penerapan metode greasing pada ball valve dalam pipa gas, termasuk jenis grease yang digunakan, prosedur pelaksanaan, serta manfaat yang diperoleh. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemeliharaan preventif dengan metode greasing dapat mengurangi risiko kegagalan katup, meningkatkan efisiensi operasional, dan memperpanjang masa pakai ball valve. Selain itu, greasing secara rutin membantu menjaga tekanan dalam sistem perpipaan dan mengurangi potensi kebocoran yang dapat membahayakan keselamatan kerja. Dengan penerapan pemeliharaan yang tepat dan sesuai standar operasional, ball valve dapat beroperasi lebih stabil dan andal dalam jangka waktu yang lebih lama. Oleh karena itu, metode greasing menjadi bagian penting dalam strategi pemeliharaan preventif untuk meningkatkan efisiensi dan keselamatan dalam sistem perpipaan gas

Abstract

Temperatur merupakan salah satu parameter yang sangat berpengaruh terhadap komposit HDPE. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengamati dan menganalisis pengaruh temperatur terhadap kekuatan tarik dan tekuk pada proses hot pressing komposit hybrid serat bambu dan serat daun nanas bermatriks HDPE. Material yang digunakan yaitu plastik HDPE, serat bambu dan serat daun nanas. Proses pembuatan dengan metode hot pressing bertekanan 25 bar dengan variasi temperatur 170°C, 180°C, 190°C, 200°C, dan 210°C selama holding time 25 menit. Pengujian yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini adalah pengujian tarik dan pengujian tekuk yang merujuk pada standar ASTM D 3039 dan ASTM D 790. Nilai kekuatan tarik maksimal komposit HDPE tertinggi terdapat pada temperatur 170°C dengan nilai sebesar 514,489 MPa dan nilai kekuatan tarik maksimal terendah terdapat pada temperatur 210°C dengan nilai sebesar 383,349 MPa. Nilai kekuatan tekuk maksimal tertinggi juga terdapat pada temperatur 170°C dengan nilai sebesar 97,322 MPa dan nilai kekuatan tekuk terendah terdapat pada temperatur 210°C dengan nilai sebesar 74,081 MPa.

Abstract

The CC 205 locomotive at the UPT Locomotive Depot Divre IV Tanjung Karang is a train that uses diesel fuel. The locomotive at UPT Locomotive Depot Divre IV Tanjung Karang experienced compressor damage, which required component replacement. This research aims to identify and carry out the process of treating valve leaks in locomotive compressors. Observation, interview, and documentation are used to obtain appropriate data and results. Maintenance carried out on this locomotive is necessary so that the CC 205 locomotive can be used optimally without any doubt. Maintenance is an activity in maintaining existing facilities by carrying out repairs or replacements necessary to maintain the condition of these components so that they are always in maximum condition. The analysis results show that air leaks in the compressor caused by compressor valve leaks can cause the pressure in the main tank not to be filled.

Abstract

Temperature is one of the parameters that is very influential in the process of making HDPE matrix composites. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in heating temperature on tensile strength and bending strength and to analyze the fracture structure of HDPE composites. The materials used in this study were HDPE plastic from used bottles, coconut fiber and Sansevieria fiber with a composite ratio of 90:5:5. The process of making HDPE composites is carried out using the hot press compression method. The pressure used is 30 bar for 30 minutes. The temperature variations used are 150ºC, 160ºC, 170ºC, 180ºC, and 190ºC. This study conducted two tests, namely tensile testing and bending testing using the Universal Testing Machine. The tensile testing process uses the ASTM D 3039 standard and obtains the highest results on specimens of 170ºC with a tensile strength value of 509.80 MPa. The value of tensile strength has increased and decreased. The bending test process was carried out according to the ASTM D 790 standard and the highest results were obtained on the 170ºC specimen with a value of 90.99 MPa.

Abstract

The inappropriate use of heavy equipment in the field's conditions and situations can result in various losses, including low production, failure to meet scheduled targets, or unnecessary repair costs. Troubleshooting in the lubrication system often occurs due to reduced flow in the distributor and clogged distributor lines. The aim of this research study is to understand the troubleshooting process performed on the automatic lubrication system of the Bucket Wheel Excavator-205 substructure. Although automatic lubrication systems are designed to enhance efficiency and operational reliability, technical issues can sometimes occur, disrupting system performance. Data collection methods include field observations, data analysis, and experiments. The research findings indicate that common problems include lubricant leaks, decreased lubrication pressure, and sensor malfunctions. Based on the analysis of causes, appropriate solutions have been implemented, including mechanical repairs, replacement of damaged components, and enhanced preventive maintenance. It is hoped that the results of this research will contribute to improving the efficiency, reliability, and lifespan of the automatic lubrication system on Bucket Wheel Excavator-205, as well as providing guidance for better maintenance in the future.

Abstract

The use of external magnetic fields is very influential in TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding because it can disrupt the stability of the electric arc formed between the tungsten electrode and the base metal. Magnetic fields can cause the arc to distort or shift, resulting in uneven and low quality welds. TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) is a welding method that uses a non-melting tungsten electrode to produce a weld. This study aims to determine the effect of external magnetic field on the quality of TIG welding results. This research uses the TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding process on low carbon steel material with speed variations of 4 mm/s, 6 mm/s, 8 mm/s and 10 mm/s and uses 2 Neodymium type external magnetic fields. Tests carried out on the results of welding joints are Vickers hardness test, micro & macro structure test. The highest hardness test value was obtained in the 4 mm/s welding speed variation using 2 external magnetic fields with a hardness value of 187.388 HVN. Microstructure testing shows that the base metal contains ferrite and pearlite structures. In the HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) area there are ferrite, pearlite and martensite structures. Macro structure testing shows several welding defects, including porosity, imperfect penetration, underfill and irregular surface. The use of two external magnetic fields can affect the results of TIG welding itself, such as deepening the penetration of welding so as to produce a good welding joint. Some things you should pay attention to if you don't want welding defects to occur are paying attention to the distance between the electric arc and the material, and the torch must be parallel to the welding line.
