Abstract

Rowosari Village, Sumberjambe Subdistrict, is one of the fostered villages of the University of Jember, where the majority of the population works as coffee farmers. However, the farmers face significant challenges in coffee cultivation due to attacks by coffee berry borer (CBB) (Hypothenemus hampei), with an infestation intensity reaching 60-67%, and nutrient deficiencies caused by the high price of fertilizers. This community empowerment program aims to address these issues through environmentally friendly pest control and soil quality improvement approaches. The solutions implemented include the application of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana formulation in the medium, which has been proven to reduce pest populations by up to 50%, and the use of solid organic fertilizer containing nitrogen (15%), phosphorus (0.8%), and potassium (12%). The results of this program show an increase in coffee production by 10.4% following the application of Beauveria bassiana and organic fertilizer. Farmers’ perceptions were also very positive, with a score of 4.5 out of 5 for ease of application and 4.2 for willingness to continue using the technology. Through the utilization of Beauveria bassiana and organic fertilizer in Rowosari Village, the empowerment program is expected to increase coffee productivity, improve soil conditions, and strengthen the resilience of farmers in facing pest and nutrient deficiency challenges sustainably.

Abstract

Coffee agroforestry is an integrated farming system that combines coffee cultivation with the planting of shade trees. While it is well-established that vegetation diversity can support populations of natural enemies, few studies have investigated how varying levels of vegetation diversity interact with microclimatic conditions to influence insect community dynamics. Conducted in Desa Pace, Jember, East Java, the research compares simple and complex agroforestry systems in terms of their vegetation structure and the resulting impacts on natural enemy diversity. Field sampling was carried out in May, July, and September using yellow pan traps, accompanied by microclimatic measurements. Results revealed that the simple agroforestry had greater vegetation diversity. However, the Shannon-Wiener Index for vegetation was 0.94 in the complex system and 0.56 in the simple system, while the diversity of natural enemies was identical (1.70) in both systems. Microclimatic factors played a key role, with the simple having higher humidity and the complex exhibiting higher temperatures. These findings underscore that higher vegetation diversity does not always correspond to increased diversity among natural enemies, pointing to the influence of other ecological and environmental factors in shaping these communities. The study highlighted the importance of selecting appropriate shade vegetation to support sustainable and climate-resilient coffee agroforestry systems.

Abstract

AbstractSumberjambe Village, Sumberjambe Subdistrict, Jember Regency, is a village assisted by the University of Jember with 4,633 hectares of rice fields and a productivity of 5.82 tons/hectare. The main problem faced by farmers is pest infestation, particularly brown planthoppers and leafhoppers, which cause a decline in crop yields. This community service program implements a rice-fish farming system, which integrates rice and fish cultivation, as an effort to improve food security while reducing pest populations in an environmentally friendly manner. The objective of this program is to enhance farmers’ knowledge and technical skills in mina padi cultivation and to improve their income. The activities were carried out through socialization, training, mentoring, and evaluation involving the “Setia Tani” farmer group. The results of the activities showed an increase in farmers' knowledge of rice-fish farming techniques from 20% to 100%. Although the height of the plants and the number of rice seedlings in the rice-fish farming system were slightly lower than in the conventional method, this system proved to be able to reduce the population of brown planthoppers (from 27 insects in the conventional system to 19 insects in the rice-fish farming system) and provide additional income in the form of a tilapia harvest of 1,500 fish. These findings prove that the rice-fish farming system not only supports food diversification and increases farmers' income, but also reduces dependence on chemical pesticides. Keywords: paddy; brown planthopper; rice-fish farming; fish.

Abstract

Abstract

Edamame (Glycine max L. Merr.) is a high-value crop and an export commodity  with  very  high  environmental  qualification  standards. Spodoptera litura and Bemisia tabaci reduce both the quantity and quality of production. Therefore, more environmentally friendly pest control methods are needed. This study evaluated several biological control agents. A field experiment was conducted using a Randomized Block Design with eleven treatments across three locations. The treatments included entomopathogenic fungi (Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae), Bacillus thuringiensis, Trichogramma sp., a botanical pesticide (1% azadirachtin), and light traps. All treatments were applied during the flowering stage. Spraying was carried out once a week, and parasitoids were released every two weeks. The results showed that pest populations changed over the observation period. The  population of B. tabaci decreased from week 4 to week 7, along with  increased  rainfall  and  enhanced  effectiveness  of  the  fungus. Treatments with combined biological agents with light traps produced highly consistent reductions in pest populations. This suggests that multiple integration of biological agents and physical traps provides stable pest suppression. Future optimization is more promising in terms of timing and long-term validation related to edamame management.

Abstract

Coffee plants are one of the plantation crops cultivated in Indonesia. Coffee cultivation is generally carried out in agroforestry systems with shade plants such as rubber and sengon. The type of shade planted in coffee cultivation can affect temperature, humidity, and light intensity, all of which can influence the agronomic characteristics of coffee plants. This study aimed to analyze the effects of temperature, humidity, and light intensity on the agronomic characteristics of coffee plants grown under two types of shade in the agroforestry system. The research was conducted by measuring temperature, humidity, light intensity, and the agronomic characteristics of coffee plants in each observation plot. The data obtained were analyzed using SEM analysis and correlation methods. The average temperature in the agroforestry areas with rubber and sengon was 29.30˚C and 29.42˚C, respectively. The average humidity in the agroforestry areas with rubber and sengon shade was 65.72% and 64.76%, respectively. The average light intensity in the agroforestry areas with rubber shade was 35.79%, while in the sengon shade, it was 45.36%. Temperature and light intensity in both agroforestry systems exhibit a positive correlation with the number of productive branches and stomatal density of coffee plants. In contrast, humidity shows a negative correlation with chlorophyll content.

Abstract

Coffee cultivation is inseparable from the threat of pests and diseases. This problem became a polemic that until now has yet to be resolved properly. Chemical control using pesticides that farmers have carried out makes pests more resistant. Pest control on coffee plants can utilize insects that act as predators, like the ground beetle. This research was conducted at the Experimental Garden of the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute, the Agrotechnology Laboratory, and The Laboratory for Pest and Plant Disease Protection at the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Center from October 2022 to February 2023. Sampling was done by purposive sampling using the pitfall trap method. The results are then calculated in the importance value index, diversity index, dominance, and evenness. Researchers also analyzed the relationship between vegetation at the study site and the diversity of ground beetles found by vegetation types present at the study site and calculated the value of each ecological index including diversity, dominance, evenness, and importance value indexes. Kaliwining experimental garden, the acquisition of ground-level arthropods obtained a high score with a diversity level of 1.333, and for the Wirolegi experimental garden 0.975.
