Abstract

The Silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is a destructive insect pest of important greenhouse and field crops. Several studies have shown the effectiveness of Beauveria bassiana in controlling Silverleaf whitefly.. However, a major challenge lies in the rapid evaporation of water in greenhouse crop models. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of B. bassiana against the whitefly and test its compatibility with various vegetable oils as carrier media. This research at the Agrotechnology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jember, used pure isolates of B. bassiana for mass production until conidia reached 2.5 x 107 per gram. We employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with factors of vegetable oil (Corn Oil, Vegetable Oil, Soybean Oil) and concentration (5%, 10%, 15%) using Ultra Low Volume (ULV) formulations. The results revealed that the addition of vegetable oils enhanced the effectiveness of B. bassiana in controlling Silverleaf whitefly, with corn oil having the most significant impact due to its high carbohydrate content that supported B. bassiana viability. Additionally, the concentration of B. bassiana formulation also influenced the rate of whitefly mortality (mycocity), with a 15% concentration yielding the best results. Whitefly nymphs infected with B. bassiana exhibited slowed activity and reduced appetite. Adding vegetable oil facilitated the formation of a protective biofilm around conidia, shielding them from UV radiation, increasing conidia viability, and supporting field application. The infection process by B. bassiana required 6 days to achieve 100% mortality. This research suggests that B. bassiana can be an effective alternative for controlling Silverleaf whiteflies, especially when used with plant-based oils as a carrier medium. This approach may help reduce reliance on chemical pesticides and address issues related to Silverleaf whitefly resistance to insecticides.

Abstract

Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) is a popular mushroom in Indonesia, with several factors affecting its yield, including seed quality, cultivation methods, and environmental conditions. The choice of planting media is crucial, as it must provide essential nutrients. Common media include straw and coffee husks, with the addition of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) enhancing productivity. Maja fruit is particularly beneficial due to its NPK content, supporting mushroom growth. This research, conducted from February to May 2024 in Klungkung Village, Jember Regency, employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The study tested media compositions—100% sawdust (M1), 75% sawdust and 25% straw (M2), and 75% sawdust and 25% coffee husk (M3)—alongside varying LOF concentrations: no LOF (P0), 75 ml/liter (P1), 150 ml/liter (P2), and 225 ml/liter (P3). Results indicated that the interaction between LOF concentration and media composition significantly affected the total number and weight of fruiting bodies. The best combination was P1M2 (75 ml LOF/liter with 75% sawdust + 25% straw). Media composition significantly influenced the number and weight of fruiting bodies, with M3 (75% sawdust + 25% coffee skin) recommended as the optimal choice. LOF concentration notably impacted total fruit body weight, while other parameters showed no significant differences.

Abstract

Abstract

Kalibaru Wetan Village, located in Kalibaru Subdistrict, Banyuwangi Regency, has potential natural wealth and superior agriculture. The agricultural area of Kalibaru Wetan Village covers a total area of 70.75 km². One of the village's primary commodities is coffee. The problems in the coffee plantations of Kalibaru Wetan Village include (1) high population of coffee berry borer (PBKo) pests attacking the coffee plants, (2) excessive use of synthetic pesticides harmful to the environment, and (3) low diversity of beneficial insects in the coffee fields. Based on these issues, it is necessary to disseminate the effects of synthetic pesticide use and the technology of insect hotels to farmers. The purpose of this community service activity is to transfer knowledge to farmers about the harmful effects of synthetic pesticides, the importance of insect diversity, and the use of insect hotel technology. The proposed solution is to implement insect hotel technology. The methods used in this community service activity include insect inventory, socialization, training on making and installing insect hotels, and program monitoring and evaluation. The results of the community service showed an increase in the diversity of insects in the coffee fields, with the number of beneficial insects such as honey bees and black ants increasing from 15 to 45 and from 20 to 60, respectively. Additionally, the use of synthetic pesticides by farmers significantly decreased from 50 liters per month to 15 liters per month. This program also successfully enhanced farmers' knowledge and skills in sustainable and environmentally friendly pest management.
