Abstract

Diarrhea is an abnormal condition characterized by excessive stool, watery consistency, which may blood and mucus. Self-medication is the self-administration of drugs or herbal remedies to treat minor illnesses or symptoms. The aim of this activity is enhance maternal knowledge and practices regarding self-medication for childhood diarrhea through an educational program comprising counseling, interactive discussions, and health screenings. The methodology encompassed  a situational analysis and planning, implementation through interactive discussions, and evaluation. The evaluation measured changes in knowledge using a pre-test/post-test design. The findings is a comparative analysis of the pre- and post-test results revealed a marked improvement in the mothers' knowledge of preventive measures and appropriate self-medication actions for managing diarrhea in children. it can be concluded that this program successfully improved the knowledge of the participating mothers. Abstract

Early childhood is highly vulnerable to health issues like diarrhea and infections due to poor implementation of Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS). This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of preschool children in Kertosari Village, Jember, specifically in mastering proper handwashing and tooth-brushing techniques. The method employed interactive counseling combined with direct demonstrations using dental phantoms and educational brochures to accommodate the concrete learning characteristics of children. The program involved 20 children under the age of seven accompanied by their parents. The results indicated that while initial knowledge was low, the children demonstrated high enthusiasm and were able to correctly practice the six-step handwashing method and proper tooth-brushing after the intervention. Evaluation through parent questionnaires showed high satisfaction, confirming that the play-based demonstration method is effective for this age group. In conclusion, this activity successfully established a foundation for independent healthy habits in children, which is essential for long-term health quality. Continued implementation with diverse health topics is recommended to ensure sustainable behavioral change

Abstract

The synthesis of dibenzalacetone, a ketone compound with potential antibacterial properties, especially against Escherichia coli, has typically involved time-consuming methods. This study adopts sonochemistry, an increasingly popular technique recognized for its efficiency and quick yield. The aim is to synthesize dibenzalacetone using the sonochemical method and evaluate its antibacterial efficacy against E. coli. The synthesis process includes a cross-aldol condensation reaction between acetone and benzaldehyde, catalyzed by NaOH, conducted in an ultrasonic bath at 35 °C for 1-5 minutes. The optimal synthesis condition, achieved in 4 minutes, resulted in a 76.56% yield of dibenzalacetone, characterized as a bright yellow solid with a melting point of 111-114°C. Techniques such as FT-IR, GC-MS, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectrometry were employed for structural characterization. The FTIR analysis revealed various functional groups, including C=O ketone, C=C aromatic, and C-H aromatic. GC-MS data confirmed the molecular weight of dibenzalacetone at m/z 234.1. Furthermore, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR analyses provided detailed insights into the compound's chemical shifts and structural groups, affirming the successful synthesis of dibenzalacetone. The antibacterial activity of dibenzalacetone against E. coli was tested at concentrations ranging from 5% to 20%. Notably, at a 15% concentration, dibenzalacetone exhibited antibacterial activity comparable to amoxicillin. These findings suggest that dibenzalacetone, efficiently synthesized via sonochemistry, not only achieves a high yield but also has potential as an antibacterial agent against E. coli. This research highlights the efficacy of sonochemistry for the rapid and effective synthesis of compounds with significant medical applications.
