Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the single agent causing pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), infects 1.8 billion people, or around one-quarter of the world's total population. In Indonesia, there are an estimated 969,000 cases of pulmonary TB, including 443,235 reported cases. Prison is a high transmission site for pulmonary TB. Prison circumstances, such as high occupancy capacity, inadequate ventilation and nutrition, difficulties accessing health care, inadequate treatment, and weak patient immunity, are some of the variables influencing this. Knowledge on the origins, transmission, preventative strategies, and early diagnosis of pulmonary TB infection is essential for the prisoner in order to change attitudes toward pulmonary TB infection. This study used a descriptive approach to generate a description of the prevalence and risk factors for the spread of pulmonary tuberculosis in the Prison of Jember Class IIA. Based on the WHO-recommended screening technique, 4 male prisoners in the Prison of Jember Class IIA (8.5%) tested positive for pulmonary tuberculosis. There are various aspects that are difficult to include into environmental health standards, particularly infectious diseases like pulmonary tuberculosis, such as the density of people in a single cell room and the construction of the building and the services housed inside it. Policymakers must pay attention to the requirement to create appropriate isolation rooms and, at the very least, satisfy room standards for patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis.

Abstract

Science education at the elementary school level is essential for fostering scientific thinking patterns and developing 21st-century skills, including science process skills (SPS). However, prior studies indicate that students’ SPS particularly in Muara Bulian District, Jambi remain at a low level due to the predominant use of lecture-based methods and the limited opportunities for scientific exploration. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model based on the local environment in improving the SPS of fifth-grade students at SDN 34/1 Teratai, Muara Bulian. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design in the form of a pretest-posttest control group. The results show a significant improvement in the experimental group’s average SPS scores, increasing from 62.40 to 85.70 with a gain score of 0.63 (moderate category). Meanwhile, the control group’s scores increased from 61.80 to 73.40 with a gain score of 0.38 (low category). The enhancement was observed across all SPS indicators, including observing, classifying, interpreting, designing experiments, and communicating. These findings suggest that the environment-based PjBL model is effective in enhancing students’ SPS and contributes to a more contextual, active, and meaningful science learning experience. Therefore, this model can serve as an alternative strategy to improve the quality of physics and science education at the elementary level.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the level of erosion in various planting patterns of agroforestry systems implemented by the community in Lupia Village, Kabangka District, Muna Regency. The background of this research is based on the issue of land degradation due to population pressure on forest areas, which prompts the need for alternative approaches such as agroforestry. The research was conducted from June to July 2012 using field study and laboratory analysis methods. The collected data includes information on rainfall, slope, soil texture and structure, as well as the types of planting patterns used. The calculation of erosion rates was done using the USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) method. The research results show that the agroforestry planting pattern consisting of a combination of Teak-Banana-Papaya (with an 8% slope) produced the lowest erosion rate of 17.40 tons/ha/year, while the combination of Teak-Long Beans-Cocoa (with a 12% slope) showed the highest erosion rate of 34.31 tons/ha/year. All observed planting patterns resulted in erosion levels exceeding the tolerance threshold, thus not reflecting a sustainable system. Therefore, it is necessary to apply soil conservation techniques to support the sustainability of the agroforestry system in the area.
