Abstract

Reading comprehension plays a pivotal role in students’ academic achievement. However, many learners struggle due to traditional teaching methods and limited strategies. To address this challenge, this research investigates whether the use of mind mapping can improve reading comprehension among eighth-grade students at SMP PT Pasangkayu. This research used a quasi-experimental design. The population consists of eighth-grade students from SMP PT Pasangkayu, totaling 85 students from 3 classes. The sample is class B as the experimental class and class C as the control class. Tests were used to collect data consisting of pre-tests and post-tests. The test results show that the average pre-test score obtained by the experimental class is 35.14, while the average pre-test score obtained by the control class is 43.72. Then the average post-test score of the experimental class was 79.64, while the control class was 53.93. The calculated t-value (3.37) was greater than the t-table value (1.674), which means the hypothesis is accepted. The t-test is used to test the significance and relevance between two unpaired sample groups. Based on the research results, the use of mind mapping can improve the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMP PT Pasangkayu.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the most challenging aspect of reading comprehension, particularly in narrative texts, as well as the factors contributing to these challenges. This research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing tests and interviews as data collection instruments. The participants of this study were students at the junior high school level during the 2024/2025 academic year. A reading comprehension test was administered to 26 students, consisting of 15 questions categorized into five types: identifying the main idea, locating references, understanding vocabulary, making inferences, and finding detailed information. In addition, three students were interviewed using a set of 10 questions. The test findings indicate that the most challenging aspect for the students is identifying detailed information. Furthermore, interview results reveal two main factors contributing to students’ difficulties in reading comprehension: internal and external factors. Internal factors include inadequate reading strategies, limited vocabulary knowledge, and low interest in reading. Meanwhile, the external factor is related to the students’ surrounding environment.

Abstract

This research is aimed at proving whether the use of Scrabble game can develop the vocabulary of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 19 Palu. This research used a quasi-experimental research design with a sample of 54 students selected using a purposive sampling technique because the selected classes were VIII B and VIII C. In gathering the test, the instrument used was a vocabulary test administered twice as pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given to the experimental and control groups before the treatment while the post-test was carried out to the experimental and control groups after the treatment. The mean score of the experimental group on pre-test was 39.77 and the control group was 46. Then, the mean score of the experimental group on post-test was 77 and the control group was 59.57. The data were statistically analyzed using the t-counted formula with degrees of freedom (df) = Nx + Ny - 2 = 26 +28 - 2 = 52. The findings show that the t-counted value is 5.896 while the t-table value is 2.006. It means that the t-counted is higher than the t-table. Therefore, the research hypothesis is accepted. It includes that Scrabble game can develop the vocabulary of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 19 Palu. The implication of this finding is that teachers need to use Scrabble game in teaching vocabulary designed to make students actively participate and enjoy learning English in the classroom.
