Abstract

This research aims to enhance the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students by applying digital flashcards in English learning at SMP Negeri 20 Palu. A quasi-experimental research design with a non-equivalent control group was employed. The population comprised 106 seventh-grade students, and the samples were selected using cluster random sampling, with class VII A assigned as the experimental group and class VII B as the control group. Data collection was carried out through pre-tests and post-tests to examine students’ improvement in vocabulary mastery. The findings revealed that students in the experimental group obtained a higher average post-test score (72.00) compared to those in the control group (56.13). Statistical analysis conducted using SPSS version 25 showed a significance value of p = 0.000, which is lower than 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. These results confirm that digital flashcards are effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, the pedagogical implications of this research indicate that integrating digital media into vocabulary instruction can foster students’ motivation, active participation, and independent learning, while also supporting the adoption of technology-based teaching practices in the classroom.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using films as a learning medium to improve English vocabulary mastery in seventh-grade junior high school students. The methodology used is quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design involving two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The sample size consisted of 64 students, divided equally into 32 students in the experimental group who were taught using films, and 32 students in the control group who were taught using conventional methods. The type of film used in the learning intervention was a short animated film that was story-oriented and had easy-to-understand dialogue, chosen for its relevance to the age and potential to attract students' interest. The main statistical analysis, specifically through an independent t-test, showed a statistically significant difference between the post-test scores of the two groups. These results indicate that the intervention using films resulted in a substantially higher increase in vocabulary mastery. Quantitatively, the experimental group showed an average increase (gain score) of 25% compared to the control group, which only showed an increase of 10%. This was proven by calculations using the SPSS 24 software system . Thus, the main conclusion of this study is that the use of films is an effective and efficient learning medium for improving English vocabulary mastery in seventh-grade junior high school students.

Abstract

The rapid growth of digital media in education has placed TikTok as a potential multimodal platform to support writing instruction. This study examined the integration of TikTok videos with narrative text outlines in enhancing EFL students’ writing skills and their perception of this instructional framework. A pre-experimental design involving a one-group pre-test, post-test, and a descriptive survey was employed, involving 32 students of the English Education Program who programmed a Text Type Writing Course. Writing narrative tests and a Likert scale questionnaire were the instruments of this research. The test data were analysed using the non-parametric Wilcoxon, and questionnaire data using descriptive statistical analysis. The statistical results showed that the mean score of the post-test (77.29) was higher than the pre-test (45.22). A Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test further demonstrated a statistically significant increase in students’ writing skill, which an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) is less than the 0.05 significance level, confirming the effectiveness of the instructional intervention. These were also reinforced by survey findings that the instruction framework enabled the students to generate and organise their ideas grammatically, chronologically, and also stimulated their creativity in composing narrative texts. In addition, the survey also revealed that the students experienced positive emotions, increased motivation, and gained meaningful learning experiences. Overall, this pedagogical integration enhanced writing achievement, affective engagement, and simultaneously elevated students’ digital literacy and 21st century skills. This study contributes to a practical and innovative framework for English as a foreign language (EFL) writing pedagogy and develops a theoretical perspective on multimodal literacy.

Abstract

Digital transformation is increasingly influencing English literacy education in secondary schools; nonetheless, differences in technology utilisation and its effects persist among institutions. This study investigates the correlation between students' preferences and the frequency of digital learning methodologies and technology integration in the advancement of English literacy. A quantitative descriptive–correlational cross-sectional design was utilised, employing a 20-item Likert questionnaire. The population consisted of senior high school students in Palu City, Indonesia, with a sample of 469 students from five schools chosen via purposive and convenience sampling methods. The results show a very significant link between Group 1's choice for digital methods and Group 2's impact on technology integration and literacy (r = 0.872; r² ? 0.761). The total visual correlation is r = 0.918. The average perception score was M = 76.89 (SD = 9.23). These results show that basic digital skills have a big impact on literacy outcomes. This means that teachers need more training in digital skills and schools need better infrastructure to facilitate long-term changes in education.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the role of code-switching in the development of English vocabulary among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 5 Palu. This research employed a descriptive quantitative approach. The population of this study consisted of all eleventh-grade students, with a sample of 30 students selected based on their involvement in English learning activities that applied code-switching. The data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS, including validity testing, reliability testing, normality testing, and mean score analysis. The results of the validity test indicated that most questionnaire items were valid, while the reliability test showed a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.729, indicating that the instrument was reliable. The normality test using the Shapiro–Wilk method showed that the data were normally distributed. The mean score analysis revealed that students had positive perceptions of the use of code-switching in English vocabulary learning, particularly in helping them understand new vocabulary, reduce learning difficulties, and increase their confidence during the learning process. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that code-switching plays a positive role in supporting the English vocabulary development of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 5 Palu.

Abstract

Purpose – Students' writing and 4C skills (critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity) remain underdeveloped. This is due to the limited use of innovative learning models and formative assessment—an educational process providing feedback during learning—in classrooms. This research examined whether integrating problem-based learning (PBL), an approach using real-world problems, with formative assessment can improve students’ writing. The study also explored how this integration affects their writing and 4C skills.Methodology – The study used a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design. The sample included fourth-semester students from the Writing in Professional Context course, specifically Class B. Researchers collected performance assessments and interviews and analyzed the data using both quantitative and qualitative methods.Findings – Quantitative results showed that integrating PBL and formative assessment significantly improved students’ writing skills. Qualitative results indicated that this integration also improved writing structure, coherence, diction, and argument development. The integration enhanced writing performance and fostered 4C skills (critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity).Contribution – This research advances writing pedagogy and 21st-century skills by guiding educators to adopt innovative, student-centered learning practices.

Abstract

The enhancement of teachers’ competence and performance has been a primary objective of Indonesia’s teacher certification program (PPG). This study aimed to describe and interpret certified teachers’ professional competencies as reflected in their classroom practices and teaching performance. Employing an explanatory mixed-method design, the study integrated qualitative interviews to explain specific trends identified in the quantitative phase. Data were collected from 15 certified English teachers enrolled in the 2021 PPG program at Tadulako University, selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The data collected from this study were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The questionnaire data were processed and statistically analyzed, while the interview data were analyzed qualitatively. Based on the data analysis, the participating teachers perceived themselves as having pedagogical, personal, social, and professional competencies and had implemented them in the teaching and learning process. Furthermore, in terms of teacher performance – including lesson planning, teaching implementation, learning evaluation, and task discipline – the teachers could be considered competent.
