Abstract

Perinatal mental health disorders are common among women during pregnancy and up to a year after delivery, primarily due to significant hormonal changes. These conditions can lead to emotional and behavioral instability that may adversely affect a child's social development. Children whose social development is impaired due to compromised maternal perinatal mental health are more likely to experience difficulties in concentrating on learning, adapting socially, and forming relationships with peers. This study aims to explore in depth how perinatal mental health status influences the development of children's social behavior. A systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and SWiM (Synthesis Without Meta-analysis) approaches. The literature search covered three major databases—PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Wiley—and two search engines—Google Scholar and Research Rabbit—for publications from 2015 to 2024. Keywords related to the impact of perinatal mental health on children's social behavior were used. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria were assessed for quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines. Children of mothers who experienced depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period had a significantly higher risk of problems with emotional regulation (4.2-fold), hyperactivity (2.17-fold), attention disorders (1.64-fold), and anxiety disorders (0.79-fold) compared to children of mothers with good perinatal mental health. Poor maternal mental health during the perinatal period is associated with an increased risk of social behavior problems in children aged 2–5 years. Therefore, close attention to maternal mental health during pregnancy and postpartum is crucial to mitigating negative impacts on child development and emotional well-being. These findings underscore the importance of perinatal mental health interventions in reducing early childhood social disorders. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship between maternal mental health and children's social behavior and to develop effective clinical interventions.

Abstract

Premature and low birth weight (LBW) infants will increase the risk of mortality, morbidity, and disability, resulting in psychological distress felt by parents. The purpose of this scoping review is to map published articles related to the psychosocial conditions of parents who have premature and LBW infants, especially in developing countries. This study employed PCC Framework (Population, Concept and Context), Prisma ScR checklist, 3 databases (PubMed, Wiley Online Library, Taylor & Francis) and 1 gray literature (Research Rabbit), published from 2019-2024, in English, original articles, free full text, articles from developing countries and used quantitative and qualitative methods. This study used the keywords “Parents” AND “Low birth weight” OR “Psychological wellbeing” OR “Parental stress” OR “Psychosocial health” AND “Developing Countries”. This scoping review used JBI Critical Appraisal Tools such as the Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional and Qualitative Research. Of the 1,939 articles selected through the Prisma Flowchart and Critical Appraisal using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), 9 articles were found suitable. This study focused on social support provided to parents to reduce psychological problems and disorders and improve quality of life. This study highlights the importance of parents’ support in preterm and LBW infants in developing countries, in order to minimize their psychological problems and disorders. The author suggests that the use of a qualitative research method for the next research should be applied to explore the psychological conditions of fathers who have premature and LBW infants in developing countries comprehensively.

Abstract

Background: one of the common problems associated with breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding is breast swelling until the incidence rate reaches 20%-70% in nursing mothers. Swelling of the breasts can be prevented non-pharmacologically, namely by compressing cold cabbage leaves and the marmet technique. Purpose: The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of cold cabbage leaf compresses and the Marmet technique in preventing postpartum breast swelling in normal puerperal mothers. Methods: Types of pre-experimental research with One-shot case study design namely cabbage compress (duration 30 minutes) and marmet technique given 1 time. The total sample of 30 respondents, was divided by 15 respondents in each group and sampling by non-probability sampling type of consecutive sampling. The measuring instrument uses an observation sheet containing a six-point engorgement scale (SPES). Data was analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test (p<0,05). Results: analysis of the effect of cold cabbage leaf compress management and marmet technique on the prevention of breast swelling for normal puerperal mothers was obtained in cold cabbage leaf compresses p-value of 0.014 and in the marmet technique obtained p-value 0.317. The results of the analysis of the effectiveness of the two techniques were obtained with a p-value of 0.007 or <0.05. Conclusion: Cold cabbage leaf compresses were significantly more effective in reducing breast swelling compared to the Marmet technique in the Independent Practice of Midwives (PBM) Setia of Palu City. It is recommended to use both techniques in helping to prevent breast swelling for normal puerperal mothers.

Abstract

Background: The incidence of spontaneous abortion reaches 226 people per 100,000 live births.  Mothers with a history of spontaneous abortion have short- to long-term psychological vulnerabilities and comorbidities. Psychological disorders can persist for up to 1 year after spontaneous abortion and can affect the social impact on the affected mother. Objective:  This study aimed to explore in depth the coping of spontaneous post-abortion womens. Method: This qualitative research uses a phenomenological approach. Participants were taken using Purposive Sampling technique with 8 mothers who had a history of spontaneous abortion for a maximum of 3 months and were recorded as patients at Pratama Gemilang Medika Piyungan Bantul Clinic Yogyakarta. In this study, data analysis uses Thematic analysis. Result: Formed in 8 main themes, namely physical (total rest at home), accepting (determined to heal), spiritual (surrendering to God and sincere, listening to tausiah in the surrounding environment, listening to da'wah through social media, praying a lot and strengthening prayers and increasing Quran reading), refreshing (walking with husband), distraction (busying yourself), hobby (me time or healing), positive thinking and preparing carefully for the next pregnancy program. The theme has been identified in reference to a general purpose. Conclusion: The coping strategy chosen for each post-abortion mother is adjusted to the emotional condition experienced, chosen by herself without interference from other parties, by letting the post-abortion mother determine which strategy is more appropriate and can make her take a positive meaning of the situation she is experiencing. It is hoped that there will be Continuity Of Care (COC) and spiritual support provided by midwives as health workers, especially to spontaneous abortion mothers.

Abstract

The mental health issues of pregnant women must be detected early and addressed quickly to prevent negative impacts on the mother, fetus, and newborn. This review aims to identify current evidence on the role of midwives in managing pregnant women with mental health problems and disorders in developing countries. The review method employed is a rapid review, utilizing the PRISMA-ScR checklist, the PCC framework, and a critical appraisal tool adapted from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for assessment. A literature search was conducted across three databases (PubMed, Wiley, Science Direct), Google Scholar, and Research Rabbit, with inclusion criteria consisting of all original articles in English or Indonesian from 2018 to 2023, discussing management, midwives' roles, inhibiting factors, supporting factors, and full-text availability. From the search, 300 articles were retrieved, of which 7 were duplicates. Screening based on inclusion criteria yielded 7 articles published in 2020 (2 articles), and 2021 (2 articles),. and 2023 (3 articles), with qualitative design (n=4, 57.2%) and cross-sectional design (n=3, 42.8%). Two articles were from Ghana, while the remaining five were from Uganda, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, China, and India. Three themes emerged regarding the midwives' role in managing pregnant women with mental health problems and disorders: screening, referral, barriers, and supportive factors. Further research is needed to test the effectiveness of midwives' screening for maternal mental health and to develop and evaluate integrated perinatal mental health service models.

Abstract

Background: Losing a baby to IUFD has a profound emotional impact on mothers. This not only affects their mental health and quality of life but also emphasizes the importance of psychological support in the recovery process. Objectives: This review aims to explore recent evidence on the biological, psychological, and social impact of intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) on mothers in developing countries. Methods: This review involved searching databases from 2015 to 2023 through sources such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Wiley, as well as search engines such as Google Scholar and Research Rabbit. Articles were selected with the help of Mendeley and evaluated using the JBI Critical Appraisal Guidelines for Qualitative Research. Of the 314 articles found, 5 articles met the inclusion criteria. Results: This review identified three main themes: biological impact (disturbing physical changes and danger warning signs), psychological impact (mothers' emotional responses), and social impact (moral support, negative stigma, health workers' misbehavior, and the need for better social protection). Conclusions: To provide adequate emotional support as well as clear and comprehensive information about the causes and next steps after fetal death, health workers need to be equipped with skills and knowledge. In situations that require difficult information delivery, midwives also need to have the sensitivity and skills to help parents manage and respond appropriately to their emotions.ABSTRACT Background: Losing a baby to IUFD has a profound emotional impact on mothers. Abstract

Significant mental health issues in postpartum mothers have an impact on both mothers and child development. Limited access to services and social stigma hinder treatment. Mental health-based mobile applications have emerged as a potential alternative intervention. The objective of the research was to analyze the effectiveness of mobile applications in reducing postpartum depression symptoms and the factors contributing to their success. A systematic review following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines was conducted, searching PubMed, Wiley, ProQuest, and Google Scholar for articles published between 2020 and 2025. Ten quantitative and qualitative articles were analyzed. Apps using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and telecounseling approaches were effective in reducing postpartum depression symptoms. Success was influenced by user-friendly design, social support, cultural sensitivity, and integration with healthcare services. Barriers included low digital literacy, stigma, and privacy concerns. Mobile apps have the potential to be an effective and affordable solution. In Indonesia, development should prioritize scientific evidence, ease of use, and integration with primary healthcare services.
