Abstract

The choice of contraceptive methods among women of reproductive age is influenced by various factors, including patriarchal culture and demographic characteristics such as age, education, and occupation. In urban areas like Surabaya, shifting social values and the accessibility of information and health services may affect reproductive decision-making patterns. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between patriarchal culture and demographic factors with the choice of contraceptive methods among women of reproductive age at Bulak Banteng and Pacarkeling Public Health Centers in Surabaya. This research employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 96 respondents were selected using consecutive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the chi-square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed no significant relationship between patriarchal culture (p = 0.235), age (p = 0.156), education (p = 0.109), and occupation (p = 0.076) with contraceptive method choice. Most respondents had a low level of patriarchal culture, moderate education, were over 35 years old, and unemployed. In conclusion, patriarchal culture and demographic factors did not directly influence contraceptive choice. The decision to use contraception may be more affected by other factors beyond socio-demographic characteristics, such as service availability and access to reproductive health information.

Abstract

HIGHLIGHTS The study examines healthcare providers’ roles in delivering holistic physical, emotional, and psychosocial support to women after pregnancy loss. The findings identify major provider barriers—limited training, institutional constraints, and emotional burden—and recommend improved training, clearer guidelines, and stronger support systems.   ABSTRACT Objective: Pregnancy loss is a complex emotional experience with a significant impact on women's physical and psychosocial health. This study aimed to explore the role of health workers in supporting women after pregnancy loss, focusing on their physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs, as well as the barriers faced by health workers. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted on six electronic databases, namely PubMed, Science Direct, Springer, ProQuest, Sage Journals, and EBSCOhost, using keywords related to pregnancy support, pregnancy loss, and challenges faced by health workers. Articles published within the last 10 years (2014-2024) were selected for this review. The selection process followed PRISMA guidelines, starting with the identification of 383 articles, followed by the removal of duplicates and screening of titles and abstracts. After the eligibility assessment stage, five articles were selected that met the inclusion criteria. Data were systematically extracted using tables that included study purpose, design, participants, type of pregnancy loss, and key findings. The results of the analysis mapped the physical, emotional, and psychosocial support provided by health workers and the barriers affecting the quality of that support. Results: Integrating physical, emotional, and psychosocial care is crucial to improve outcomes for women experiencing pregnancy loss. Addressing challenges faced by healthcare providers will enhance service quality and patient support. Conclusions: Holistic support that includes physical, emotional and psychosocial aspects is essential in helping women to cope with pregnancy loss. However, barriers such as lack of training and institutional support affect the effectiveness of care. This review recommends strengthening formal training, developing structured guidelines, and improving support systems for health workers to enhance the quality of care and professional well-being.

Abstract

Breech presentation pregnancies often cause physical discomfort and anxiety, which can impact maternal well-being. The knee-chest intervention is a non-pharmacological intervention that, physiologically, has the potential to improve maternal comfort, but scientific evidence remains very limited. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the knee-chest position on the comfort of pregnant women with breech presentation, providing evidence that can inform clinical practice and improve patient care. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a control group, involving nineteen third-trimester pregnant women with breech presentation divided into an intervention group (n=10) and a control group (n=9). The intervention group received routine knee-chest exercises, while the control group received standard antenatal care. Comfort levels were measured using the General Comfort Questionnaire (GCQ) before and after the intervention. Data analysis was both descriptive and inferential, comparing changes in comfort scores across groups to ensure reliable results for healthcare professionals and researchers. The intervention group showed a significant increase in the total GCQ comfort score after the knee-chest intervention, encompassing physical, psychospiritual, and environmental aspects, compared with the control group. Clarifying how these improvements translate to maternal well-being can help readers assess practical benefits

Abstract

Postpartum contraception prevents about 30% of maternal deaths and 10% of infant deaths within two years. As many as 62% of women who gave birth did not use contraception immediately after delivery. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the correlation between maternal knowledge and husband's support for postpartum family planning use. This study was a cross-sectional study. The data was collected by interview and filling out questionnaires. The sample included mothers with no history of chronic and infectious diseases who were 42 days postpartum. Bivariate analysis was performed using chi-squared to evaluate the correlation between independent variables and dependent variables. A total of 42 women who gave birth were identified in this study, 21.4% were using postpartum family planning and 78.6% were not using postpartum family planning. Factors associated with postpartum family planning use were husband's support (p=0.038), while maternal knowledge was not associated with postpartum family planning use (p=0.480). Husband's support is associated with postpartum family planning use. Husband's support for family planning will have a significant impact on the family's decision to use a particular family planning tool or method.

Abstract

The utilization of intrauterine devices (IUDs) remains low in Maluku Province, with a reported adoption rate of only 33.9% in 2020. At the Moti Community Health Center in 2022, IUD usage was recorded at just 0.19%. This study aimed to identify factors influencing the interest in choosing IUD at the   Moti Community Health Center in Ternate City, North Maluku Province. Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, the research employed multistage random sampling involving 66 women of reproductive age (WRA). Data collection utilized questionnaires and interviews, with statistical analysis including univariate and bivariate analyses using Chi-Square tests. Out of 66 respondents, 19 (28.8%) expressed interest in choosing IUD, while 47 (71.2%) did not. Chi-square analysis revealed significant correlations between interest in IUD and variables such as knowledge (p-value 0.002), attitude (p-value 0.031), education (p-value 0.027), husband's support (p-value 0.000), and acceptance of birth control information (p-value 0.001). However, parity showed no significant association (p-value 0.624) with mothers' interest in choosing IUD at the Moti Health Center in Ternate City, North Maluku Province. Significant relationships were observed for variables like knowledge and attitude, whereas parity did not demonstrate a notable link. Increasing IUD adoption among WRA requires enhanced education, family involvement, flexible services, and competent healthcare providers. Encouraging husbands’ participation, structured counselling, home visits, and incentives can boost uptake. These findings highlight the need for training the staff, and collaborating with community leaders to increase IUD adoption.

Abstract

Background: The estimated occurrence and mortality rates of Central Nervous System (CNS) tumors in Indonesia in 2016 were 6,337 and 5,405, respectively. Based on medical record data from Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, for the period of 2017-2021, there were 1,192 meningioma patients. The manifestation of meningioma linked with age and is 2.3 times higher in women than in men. Sex hormones are considered one of the risk factors for meningioma development. The medroxyprogesterone injectable contraceptive is the most widely used type of contraception in Indonesia. The majority of contraceptives used by meningioma patients at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital during the 2012-2016 period were hormonal contraceptives of the progestin-only type. This study aims to analyze the association between the history of using progestin-only injectable hormonal contraception and the odds of cerebral meningioma among female patients at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, during the 2020-2024 period. Methods: This study uses a retrospective case-control approach. The sample size was 30 subjects for the case group (cerebral meningioma) and 30 subject for the control group. The control group (Non-Cerebral Meningioma) is maintained, but these limitations are acknowledged in the discussion. An independent variable is a 3-month history of injectable contraceptive use (progestin-only), which is defined in more detail by duration and recentness. The sampling technique used was total sampling. The research instrument utilized was electronic medical records. The data analysis uses the Chi-square and Multivariate Binary Logistic Regression tests to calculate the Adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) with a 95% Confidence Interval. Results: The results indicated a highly significant association between the history of 3-month injectable contraception use and cerebral meningioma incidence (p < 0.001). Further stratification analysis revealed an adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) of 6.00 (95% CI: 1.17–30.73) for the history of exposure and 1.58 (95% CI: 1.08–2.30) for the duration of use. Although the risk estimates adjusted during stratification, both factors remained statistically significant risk indicators. Conclusion: The data suggest a strong association between a 3-month history of injectable contraceptive use with greater odds of developing cerebral meningioma.

Abstract

The high incidence of postpartum fatigue and anxiety in Indonesia hindering mothers’ recovery and breastfeeding success. Non-pharmacological and safe interventions aligned with local cultural values are needed. Islamic guided imagery provides relaxation that integrates positive visualization with the spiritual value of zikr. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Islamic guided imagery in reducing fatigue and anxiety scores in postpartum mothers. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-posttest and a control group. A total of 45 postpartum mothers (0–6 weeks) were recruited using consecutive sampling techniques and divided into intervention (n = 23) and control (n = 22) groups. The Islamic guided imagery intervention was delivered in audio format for 15–20 minutes per day for 3 days, demonstrating its simplicity and feasibility for busy postpartum care routines. Fatigue levels were measured using the Postpartum Fatigue Scale (PFS), and anxiety was measured using the State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S). Data were analyzed using an independent t-test. The intervention group showed a significant and progressive reduction in fatigue and anxiety scores from day 1 to day 3 compared with the control group (p 0.001). The quick improvements of -15.8 and -17.7 points in fatigue and anxiety scores, respectively, can inspire healthcare providers and researchers to consider this intervention as an effective, fast-acting option. The Islamic guided imagery effectively reduces postpartum fatigue and anxiety by strengthening emotional regulation and spiritual coping. Recommendations for future research include conducting randomized controlled trials with longer follow-up and including stress biomarker measurements to strengthen the generalizability of findings.
