Abstract

This paper aims to uncover the Islamic values behind the ritual of a cow head burial held by people in Bamboo Forest, Sumbermujur, Candipuro, Lumajang. It is one of the rituals of a popular Javanese culture called Grebek Suro, conducted in the first month of the Javanese calendar. It finds that the Islamic value of the ritual is salam or safety. The cow head burial is intended to bring about safety (slamet) towards society in the upcoming year. This research is expected to contribute in calling people for preserving local culture and Islamic values within the rituals. It is limited to the exploration of the Islamic values within the ritual of a cow head burial in Grebeg Suro ceremony. Further researches are expected to study the other rituals, such as Gunungan, Tumpengan, Japa Mantra, Larungan, and the dancing ritual. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap nilai Islam di balik ritual penanaman kepala sapi yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat di Hutan Bambu, Sumbermujur, Candipuro, Lumajang. Ini adalah salah satu ritual budaya Jawa terkenal, Grebek Suro, yang dilakukan pada bulan pertama penanggalan Jawa. Studi ini menemukain bahwa nilai Islam dari ritual tersebut adalah salam atau keselamatan. Penguburan kepala sapi dimaksudkan untuk membawa keselamatan (slamet) bagi masyarakat di tahun mendatang. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat berkontribusi dalam mengajak masyarakat untuk melestarikan budaya lokal dan nilai-nilai Islam dalam ritualnya. Penelitian ini terbatas pada penggalian nilai-nilai Islam dalam ritual penguburan kepala sapi di upacara Grebeg Suro. Penelitian selanjutnya diharapkan menganalisis ritual-ritual lainnya, seperti Gunungan, Tumpengan, Japa Mantra, Larungan, dan ritual menari.

Abstract

Poetry stands as one of the most elevated forms of Arabic literature and served as a central medium through which pre-Islamic Arabs documented events, values, and social realities. Its composition follows a strict metrical system built upon tafʿīlāt (metrical feet), which may undergo prosodic modifications known as ʿilal. These alterations provide poets with stylistic flexibility, allowing them to select words that reflect their emotional and social conditions while enhancing the expressive impact of their verses. The scholarly debate over the necessity of adhering to these ʿilal prompted the researcher to examine how pre-Islamic poets approached them, focusing particularly on Zuhayr ibn Abī Sulmā—one of the most esteemed figures in early Arabic poetry. His reputation for meticulous craftsmanship, polishing each poem over the span of a full year, earned his works the title ḥawliyyāt (“yearly refined poems”). This study aims to assess the extent to which Zuhayr adhered to prosodic ʿilal through a qualitative analysis based on library research. The findings indicate that Zuhayr consistently followed the prescribed ʿillah in the ḍarb (the final foot of the verse), demonstrating strict compliance with traditional metrical rules in this position. However, his adherence in the ʿarūḍ (the penultimate foot) was variable; in some instances, he maintained conformity with the expected form, while in others he opted for alternative structures to achieve stylistic or expressive aims. These observations suggest that Zuhayr’s poetic precision did not preclude artistic flexibility but rather reflected a balanced approach that honored classical prosody while accommodating creative expression.

Abstract

Speaking skill development in Arabic learning often faces challenges related to anxiety, limited practice opportunities, and lack of exposure to authentic spoken language. This study aims to explore graduate students’ lived experiences in using YouTube Arabic Podcasts for developing maharah kalam. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved graduate students as participants, with data collected through in-depth interviews and classroom observations and analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that students experience YouTube Arabic Podcasts as a flexible and learner-controlled medium that supports autonomous speaking practice. Repeated exposure to authentic pronunciation and intonation reduces speaking anxiety, enhances confidence, and gradually improves fluency. Students also demonstrate a shift in speaking orientation, prioritizing meaning-making over grammatical perfection. The novelty of this study lies in its phenomenological insight into the psychological and experiential dimensions of podcast-based Arabic speaking learning. The findings imply that integrating Arabic podcasts into speaking instruction can foster a more communicative, confidence-oriented, and learner-centered approach to maharah kalam development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and functions of verbal sentences in the short story Haflah Tharb by Muhammad Taymour based on Kenneth L. Pike’s Tagmemic theory. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The data consist of sentences and phrases found in the short story Haflah Tharb by Muhammad Taymour. The data were collected using reading, translating, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal four patterns of transitive sentence structures in Haflah Tharb: (1) P + S + O; (2) P + S + O + Adj; (3) P + O + S; and (4) P + S + Adj + O. Each pattern is analyzed in terms of slots, classes, roles, and cohesion, all of which require the presence of an object to complete the meaning of the transitive predicate. This study contributes theoretically by applying Pike’s tagmemic analysis to modern Arabic literary texts. Specifically, it identifies variations in transitive syntactic patterns that enrich the understanding of Arabic sentence structure in a narrative context.

Abstract

The phenomenon of euphemism often appears in literary works; this element appears to prioritize aesthetic values and taste. Euphemism in literary works is also used as a rhetorical tool that functions to express meanings containing hidden intentions, both implicit and figurative. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to classify the types of euphemisms found in the novels The Thief and The Dogs and Thistle Flowers and to describe the patterns of euphemism in the novels in depicting crime. By using a descriptive qualitative approach with a stylistic analysis method, this study identified 64 euphemistic expressions in the novel The Thief and The Dogs by Najib Mahfouz and the novel Thistle Flowers by Muhammad Farid Abu Hadid, then analyzed using interactive qualitative analysis in the form of data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. Ten types of euphemisms were found in both novels, namely metaphor, understatement, hyperbole, one-to-one substitution, frivolity, general-to-specific, part-to-whole, simile, personification, and irony. The euphemism patterns of these two novels tend to differ in their narratives, which lie in aspects such as theme, euphemistic symbols used, narrative style, and story background. In addition to disguising the implied criminality, euphemism also serves to highlight the emotional side of the characters. This study contributes to Arabic literary stylistics by offering a comparative framework for analyzing euphemism and recommending further research on the role of euphemism in representing social and moral tensions in Arabic narrative fiction. Abstrak Fenomena eufemisme sering muncul dalam karya sastra, unsur ini muncul untuk mengutamakan nilai estetika dan rasa. Eufemisme dalam karya sastra juga digunakan sebagai alat retorika yang berfungsi mengungkapkan makna yang mengandung maksud terselubung, baik implisit maupun figuratif. Maka dari itu, tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: mengklasifikasikan jenis-jenis eufemisme yang terdapat pada novel The Thief dan The Dogs and Thistle Flowers dan  mendeskripsikan pola eufemisme novel tersebut dalam menggambarkan kriminalitas. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan metode analisis stilistika, penelitian ini mengidentifikasi 64 ekspresi eufemisme di novel The Thief and The Dogs karya Najib Mahfudz dan novel Thistle Flowers karya Muhammad Farid Abu Hadid kemudian dianalisis dengan analisis kualitatif interaktif berupa reduksi data, penyajian data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Sepuluh jenis eufemisme yang ditemukan dalam kedua novel tersebut, yaitu metafora, pernyataan yang diremehkan, hiperbola, substitusi satu-satu, kesembronoan, umum-ke-khusus, bagian-ke-keseluruhan, simile, personifikasi, dan ironi. Pola eufemisme kedua novel ini cenderung memiliki perbedaan dalam menarasikan eufemisme yang terletak pada aspek-aspek seperti tema, simbol-simbol eufemisme yang digunakan, gaya penuturan, dan latar belakang cerita. Selain untuk menyamarkan makna kriminalitas yang tersirat, eufemisme juga berfungsi untuk menonjolkan sisi emosional tokoh. Penelitian ini berkontribusi pada stilistika sastra Arab dengan menawarkan kerangka komparatif untuk menganalisis eufemisme dan merekomendasikan penelitian lebih lanjut tentang peran eufemisme dalam merepresentasikan ketegangan sosial dan moral dalam fiksi naratif Arab.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a psychological factor that frequently inhibits students’ confidence and fluency in Arabic language learning. One approach with potential to address this issue is Mindfulness Training, which emphasizes non-judgmental awareness of thoughts, emotions, and bodily responses. This study aimed to analyze the effect of Mindfulness Training in reducing Arabic speaking anxiety in terms of physiological, cognitive, and affective aspects, as well as to identify the aspect most influenced by the intervention. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants consisted of 58 eighth-grade students at MTs Wahid Hasyim 1 Dau, Malang. Data were collected through an Arabic speaking anxiety questionnaire administered before and after six intervention sessions, and analyzed using paired sample t-tests and the Friedman test. The results revealed a significant reduction in speaking anxiety across all aspects, with a significance value of p = 0.000. The cognitive aspect showed the greatest decrease (Δ = 9.97), followed by the physiological (Δ = 8.48) and affective aspects (Δ = 7.26). These findings confirm that Mindfulness Training is effective in reducing Arabic speaking anxiety, particularly through changes in students’ cognitive processes.

Abstract

Bias Gender sebagai gejala sosial tidak hanya muncul dalam tindakan nyata, tetapi juga secara halus melalui bahasa, termasuk dalam implikatur percakapan yang dapat mencerminkan ideologi patriarki dan bias gender. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis bagaimana bias gender direpresentasikan dalam implikatur konvensional dan percakapan pada novel Granada karya Radwa Ashour dengan menggunakan teori Grice sebagai pisau analisis. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi pustaka, mengkaji teks terjemahan Indonesia novel tersebut. Data diperoleh melalui teknik baca dan katat, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan analisis model Miles dan Huberman dengan kutipan kutipan teks, prinsip maksim Grice, dan teori gender. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya berbagai bentuk bias gender, seperti stereotip perempuan sebagai sosok domestik, pembenaran terhadap subordinasi dan ketaatan perempuan, tujuanikasi perempuan sebagai pemuas hasrat laki-laki, dominasi laki-laki dalam pengambilan keputusan, serta pembenaran kekerasan fisik terhadap perempuan. Implikatur tersebut kerap tersembunyi dalam ujaran sehari-hari yang tampak biasa, namun sarat makna ideologi patriarki. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi teoritis pada kajian pragmatik dan gender, serta penerapan praktis dalam meningkatkan kesadaran kritis pembaca terhadap seksisme terselubung dalam wacana sastra. Penelitian ini memiliki keterbatasan karena hanya mengkaji satu novel. Penelitian selanjutnya disarankan untuk menelaah karya sastra lain guna memperoleh gambaran yang lebih luas.Kata Kunci :Bias Gender; Implikatur Grice; Novel Granada; Wacana SastraApa yang Harus Dilakukan Saat Ini? Abstract

Arabic language learning at the junior high school level plays an important role in developing students’ foundational language competencies, particularly listening skills as the basis for speaking skills. However, instructional practices are still largely dominated by text-based methods, resulting in limited authentic oral exposure and causing students to experience difficulties in understanding spoken Arabic. This study aims to describe the implementation of Arabic-Listening Speaking media in teaching listening skills at SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang, based on Stephen Krashen’s Second Language Acquisition Theory, specifically the Input Hypothesis and the Affective Filter Hypothesis. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation, and were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the systematic use of audio media, interactive videos, and applications through the stages of pre-listening, whilst-listening, and post-listening provides authentic and contextual input in accordance with the i+1 principle. The media enhance vocabulary mastery, intonation, and sentence structure, while also fostering students’ motivation, participation, and self-confidence. Repetition, scaffolding, and collaborative strategies effectively address learning barriers, demonstrating that the media optimally support the improvement of listening skills. Namun, praktik pembelajaran masih didominasi metode tekstual sehingga paparan lisan autentik terbatas dan siswa mengalami kesulitan memahami bahasa Arab lisan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan implementasi media Arabic-Listening Speaking dalam pembelajaran keterampilan mendengar di SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang berdasarkan teori pemerolehan bahasa kedua Stephen Krashen, khususnya Input Hypothesis dan Affective Filter Hypothesis. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan desain studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi partisipatif, serta dokumentasi, kemudian dianalisis dengan model Miles, Huberman, dan Saldana melalui tahap reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan media audio, video interaktif, dan aplikasi secara sistematis melalui tahap pre-listening, whilst-listening, dan post-listening mampu menyediakan input yang autentik, kontekstual, dan sesuai prinsip i+1. Media ini meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata, intonasi, dan struktur kalimat, serta mendorong motivasi, partisipasi, dan kepercayaan diri siswa. Strategi pengulangan, scaffolding, dan kolaborasi efektif mengatasi hambatan pembelajaran, sehingga media terbukti mendukung peningkatan keterampilan mendengar secara optimal. Abstract

In producing a poem, it is not uncommon for a writer to produce a poem that contains implied meaning through the use of figurative language or metaphors. This encourages readers to think more deeply in order to understand the meaning conveyed by the author through the figurative language he uses. The objectives of tjis study are : 1) to describe the lexical meaning in the poem Ahinnu Ila Khubzi Ummi based on Abdul Caher’s perspective, 2) to describe the grammatical meaning in the poem Ahinnu Ila Khubzi Ummi based on Abdul Chaer’s perspective. The theory used in this study is the lexical and grammatical semantic theory proposed by Abdul Chaer. This research is descriptive qualitative research with data collection techniques in the form of reading and note-taking, while the data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman model, which is divided into three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The primary data source for this study is the lines in the poem Ahinnu Ila Khubzi Ummi by Mahmoud Darwish and its translation, while the secondary data used in this study is form several books and journals related to this study. The result of this study found lexical meanings consisting of synonymy, antonymy, homonymy, hyponymy, polysemy, ambiguity, and reduncacy. Meanwhilw, the grammatical meanings found consisted of affixation, reduplication, and composition.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the forms of illocutionary speech acts in the short story Juḥā wa as-Sulṭān by Aḥmad Bahjat and to examine language as a medium of humor, criticism, and power negotiation. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using John R. Searle’s theory of speech acts, which includes five types: representative (assertive), directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. The data consist of twelve utterances by the characters, analyzed based on their illocutionary force and contextual meaning. The results show that representative and directive illocutionary acts appear in three data points each, while expressive, commissive, and declarative acts occur in two data points respectively.
