Abstract

White shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) cultivation activities have developed rapidly in Indonesia. White shrimp aquaculture which is carried out intensively with high stocking densities has caused several problems, such as low survival and suboptimal growth. This study aimed to increase the growth, feed conversion, and survival of white shrimp through a combination of probiotics (Lactobacillus sp.) + turmeric flour (Curcuma longa) in feed. The method used in this study was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatment levels and three replications. The results revealed a significant effect (P0.05) on the value of the daily growth rate (DGR), absolute growth rate (AGR), specific growth rate (SGR), survival rate (SR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and feed efficiency (FE), but no significant effect (P0.05) on the value of the absolute length rate (ALR). Giving probiotics 10 ml+5 g turmeric flour/kg feed (treatment B) was the best treatment for white shrimp aquaculture, including DGR, AGR, ALR, LPS, SR, FCR, and FE values. Furthermore, the results also revealed that increasing the concentration of turmeric flour in the feed, was negatively correlated to the growth and survival of white shrimp.

Abstract

Violet Batissa (Batissa violacea) is an important economic organism on the west-south coast of Aceh, because it is relatively high consumed by the community. However, gold mining activities carried out around the watershed are estimated to pollute the river and cause B. violacea to also be affected. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of mercury (Hg) and Lead (Pb) contamination in clam meat in Teunom, Aceh Jaya Regency. The research was conducted from June to September 2021. Sampling of clam was done by purposive sampling method. Hg and Pb were analyzed in clam meat using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) method. The results of the analysis showed that the Hg content in clam meat was between 0.12-0.63 mg/kg (mean 0.35±0.26 mg/kg), water 0.0026-0.0103 mg/kg (mean 0.0052±0.004 mg/kg), and sediment 1.3224-3.8767 mg/kg (mean 2.2324±1.427 mg/kg). Furthermore, the results of the analysis showed that the Pb content in clam meat, water and sediment had the same value at 3 stations with values 0.0002±0 mg/kg, 0.0003±0 mg/kg, and 0.0002±0 mg/kg, respectively. The conclusion of this study is that the Hg content in water and sediment has exceeded the threshold, while the clam meat is still in good quality standards. The Pb content in clam meat, water and sediment were also in good quality standards. Based on our study, B. violacea is still safe for consumption, while the water has been polluted and is recommended not to be utilized for human consumption. Keywords:Heavy metalRiverWaterSedimentBatissa violacea

Abstract

Abstract

Bireuen Regency, located on the eastern coast of Aceh, is rich in natural resources, particularly in marine fisheries. Among these, mantis shrimp are a notable resource, though their population dynamics remain undocumented. Currently, mantis shrimp are considered bycatch by local fishermen, with most being discarded. To address this gap, this study aimed to identify and analyze the morphology and composition of mantis shrimp in the waters of Bireuen Regency. The research was conducted from October 2024 in Gandapura District, employing purposive random sampling at three designated sites. The species identified was Harpiosquilla raphidea. Morphological measurements revealed six body segments: head length (PK), head width (LK), body length (PB), body width (LB), tail length (PE), and tail width (LE). Results indicated that mantis shrimp constituted 50% of the catch, followed by tiger shrimp (25%) and kelong shrimp (25%). The length-weight relationship of mantis shrimp showed a b-value of <3, signifying negative allometry, where growth in length outpaces growth in weight. These findings provide baseline data for further studies on mantis shrimp populations and their potential utilization in sustainable fisheries.

Abstract

It is necessary to collect data on the species of fish that live in a body of water, one of which is by carrying out an inventory of fish species. The method used is purposive sampling in places that are thought to have lots of fish, are easy to reach and represent the river area. The research parameters in this activity are the level of diversity, level of uniformity, level of dominance, level of species richness, level of similarity, distribution pattern, relationship between length and weight and condition factors. The aim of this research is to provide real benefits in an effort to find out the potential of what species of fish are found in the Leuser Ecosystem, especially the Celike River. There are 13 species of fish found in the Celike River in the Leuser Conservation Area, East Aceh, belonging to 7 families with a total of 132 individuals. The diversity index value is classified as moderate with a value for station 1 of 1.26 and station 4 of 1.49. The highest uniformity index is at station 5 and station 3. The uniformity index value at these stations has the same index (E = stable 0.91). Stations 2, 3, 4, 5 and station 6 have the highest dominance index values in the high category (C=0.87-1.18).Keywords:IchtiofaunaCelike RiverLeuser EcosystemExploration

Abstract

The threat of decreasing populations of Tor species continues to increase due to intensive fishing, habitat destruction and infrequent cultivation efforts. Monitoring of this group of fish must be carried out routinely to reveal the population conditions of fish. This research aims to reveal the population conditions of fish through an analytical approach to the length-weight relationship and fish otolith size. All fish samples were then taken for otoliths to measure their size and analyzed further using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The research was conducted in the Tangkahan River, North Sumatra, Indonesia from January-March, 2023. The results showed that 43 samples of T. douronensis, 34 samples of T. tambra, and 24 samples of T. tambroides had b values of 2.853, 2.757, and 2.353, respectively. The b value in this study indicated that the fish had a negative allometric growth pattern. The size of the otoliths of the three Tor species shows that T. tambra has the highest length (the distance measured from the anterior to the posterior of the of sagitta otolith) on average reaching 9.31 mm, while T. tambroides and T. douronensis only reach 1.53 mm and 1.83 mm. The results were confirmed by ANOVA showing significant differences (P 0.05) in the mean value of otolith size based on Tor species, where the otolith size of T. tambra was significantly different compared to the other two species. The condition of Tor species in the Tangkahan River has experienced ecological pressure. This indication was concluded from the results of the analysis of the length-weight relationship of fish which showed b value 3 (negative allometric). The results show that the characteristics and size of the otoliths can differentiate Tor species and facilitate identification efforts related to management and conservation. Keywords:Habitat DestructionNegative AllometricAnterior of Sagitta OtolithPosterior of Sagitta Otolith

Abstract

Tor tambroides, T. tambra, T. douronensis, and T. soro are native fish species to Indonesia with their natural habitat generally being upstream of rivers in hilly areas with clear water and strong currents. Information of the structure and function of appendicular osteology is necessary to understand how fish accelerate and maintain body balance in the water. This study used 5 samples per fish species obtained from Tor fishermen around the habitat of these fish. The results of the comparison showed morphological differences between the appendicular structure of Tor species, consisting structure of the pinnae pectoralis, pinnae pelvicalis, pinnae dorsalis, pinnae analis, and pinnae caudalis. The highest variation was found in the pinnae caudalis. The pointed shape of the pinnae caudalis with long fin rays indicates that the Tor species is capable to swim at a high speeds. Keywords:ossa appendiculareTor douronensisTor tambraTor tambroidesTor soro

Abstract

Contamination of palm oil mill effluent (POME) into water bodies potentially increases turbidity, resulting in disrupting aquatic organisms behaviour, including predation period. However, the effect of increased turbidity due to POME contamination toward the fish predation is still unexplored. Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) is one of the ideal test fish to investigate this effect. This study aims to analyze the effect of increased turbidity due to POME contamination toward the fish predation period of Siamese fighting fish. The research design was completely randomized with six treatments (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 NTU) followed by five repetitions for each treatment. The experimental data parameters include the predation rate of Siamese fighting fish during foraging activity, which was calculated from the percentage of the number of mosquito larvae consumed per 2 min during 15 min. The significance level of predation between treatments in each observation time period was analyzed using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with the confidence interval set at the 95% level. The results showed that at a turbidity level of 100 NTU, the predation period of Siamese fighting fish had been altered. In the period of 0-2 min, the predation rate decreased significantly. Meanwhile, the predation rate increased significantly during the period of 2-4 and 8-10 min. This finding should be considered to support POME remediation management, especially turbidity parameters. Keywords:POMEFeeding periodForaging areaTurbidity
