Abstract

Myopia, a common refractive error, has seen a significant global increase, particularly among young adults. This study aims to investigate the association between genetic factors, short-distance activity, and the incidence of myopia among medical students. A cross-sectional survey design was employed to collect data from medical students in batches 2022 and 2023. Chi-square tests were used to analyze the relationship between the variables. Demographic data revealed a predominantly young female population, with a high proportion of students enrolled in the 2023 academic year. A significant number of students were diagnosed with myopia, ranging from low to high degrees. Risk factor analysis indicated a strong association between reduced short-distance activity and increased myopia risk. Additionally, a family history of myopia emerged as a significant genetic predisposition to the condition. These findings highlight the importance of addressing both environmental and genetic factors to prevent and manage myopia among medical students. Future longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes are needed to further explore the temporal relationship between risk factors and myopia progression.

Abstract

Benign tumors were more common than malignant tumors, with a ratio of 1:100. However, in 2019, approximately 13,000 cases of malignant tumors were reported in the United States. Based on data from Cancer Referral Hospitals in Indonesia, soft tissue sarcomas were among the ten most common cancers in 2013, with approximately 75% of cases occurring in the extremity region. This study aimed to describe the histopathological examination results of patients with soft tissue tumors at the Madani General Hospital, Medan City. This study used a retrospective descriptive design by collecting data from the medical records of patients who underwent histopathological examination at the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory of Madani General Hospital (period 2018-2022). Data were analyzed based on the distribution of cases according to age, sex, and tumor type. The results showed that soft tissue tumors were most prevalent in the 41-50 age group with 30 patients (20.3%), the majority were female with 85 patients (57.4%), and based on histopathological diagnosis, lipoma was the most common type of tumor found in 70 patients (47.3%). All cases studied were benign tumors, with a total of 148 patients (100%).

Abstract

Primary renal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare neoplasm strongly associated with a history of nephrolithiasis. Renal SCC is reported to have high morbidity and mortality rates, especially in the elderly population. Clinical manifestations of renal SCC are generally characterized by hematuria, flank pain, and a palpable mass in the retroperitoneal area. Histopathological examination reveals the infiltration of squamous cell nests that destroy the stroma. These cells show nuclear pleomorphism, an increased nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio, irregular nuclear membranes, coarse chromatin, prominent and dense basophilic nucleoli, and eosinophilic cytoplasm. These histopathological findings confirm the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. The uniqueness of this case lies in the diagnosis of renal SCC in a relatively young age group, making it a distinct clinical concern. Further immunohistochemical examination, including CK5/6, p63, p40, and CK14 panels, is needed to determine the prognosis and appropriate treatment strategy. This case report emphasizes the importance of understanding kidney stone disease as a preventive measure against the development of renal SCC.

Abstract

Vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and body temperature, are essential indicators of physiological responses to exercise. Environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity may alter these responses, yet limited evidence exists regarding their effect during indoor training in tropical climates. This study aimed to analyze differences in vital sign responses between individuals performing gymnastics-based strength training in air-conditioned (AC) and non-AC fitness centers in Medan Petisah District, Medan. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest two-group design was applied with 100 male participants aged 18–30 years who routinely engaged in gymnastics-based exercise. Participants were divided into two groups: training in AC gyms and training in non-AC gyms. Vital signs, namely heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiratory rate, and body temperature, were measured before and after a standardized 30-minute session. Data analysis used the Independent t-test with a significance threshold of p<0.05. The findings showed no statistically significant differences in heart rate (p=0.184), systolic blood pressure (p=0.263), diastolic blood pressure (p=0.714), respiratory rate (p=0.114), and body temperature (p=0.380) between the AC and non-AC groups. These results indicate that short-term strength training produces similar physiological responses regardless of the presence of air conditioning. Strength training in both AC and non-AC environments demonstrated comparable impacts on vital signs. Although environmental comfort may differ, acute physiological adaptation remained stable. Further studies should involve diverse participants, longer training durations, and additional physiological variables to deepen understanding.

Abstract

Soft tissue tuberculosis is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis characterized by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection of the subcutaneous tissue. This condition is important to recognize because its symptoms are nonspecific and often mimic malignancy, often referred to as a "good imitator." According to WHO data from 2023, the global TB incidence rate was 134 per 100,000 population, with Indonesia ranking second highest in the world. This study aims to describe the results of histopathological examinations of soft tissue tuberculosis patients at Madani General Hospital, Medan, during the period 2020–2024. The method used was a retrospective descriptive study through a review of the medical records of patients examined in the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory. Analysis was conducted on variables such as age, gender, lesion location, and histopathological results. The results showed that the largest age group was 19–27 years (25%), while the smallest was 10–18 years (7.5%). The gender distribution was balanced between males and females (50% each). The most common lesions were the neck and back (22.5%), while rarer locations, such as the axilla, buttocks, mandible, groin, and elbow, occurred in only 2.5% each. All cases were confirmed by histopathology, underscoring the importance of this examination to rule out malignancy and expedite the appropriate management of extrapulmonary tuberculosis.

Abstract
