Abstract

Language is the ability to communicate with others, encompassing various forms such as verbal, written, gestures, numbers, drawings, and facial expressions. It allows people to express thoughts, feelings, and ideas using symbols. Effective communication requires language skills, which are essential for humans to connect with one another. Language is a key factor that distinguishes humans from animals, enabling individuals to understand themselves, others, and their surroundings. Through language, people can share their thoughts, preferences, and ideas. In Kasreman village, Kanangan subdistrict, Kediri district, many children cannot communicate well, which is due to a lack of interaction between parents and children. Based on this, it inspired the PKM team consisting of UNHASY lecturers and students to carry out PKM with the title "Outreach for Parents About the Importance of Language Learning for Early Childhood in Kasreman Village, Kandangan, Kediri." This activity aims to equip parents so they can apply it in everyday life.

Abstract

In an effort to implement the Independent Curriculum, English teachers face a major challenge in creating creative and innovative teaching materials. The Independent Curriculum gives teachers the freedom to determine teaching methods and teaching materials that suit students' needs, but this also requires high creativity from teachers (Kemendikbud, 2021). Many teachers are still trapped in conventional teaching patterns and find it difficult to develop interesting and interactive materials (Putri, 2023). In this training, a program was implemented in the form of training to increase knowledge and insight related to physical visual teaching materials. Therefore, the approach methods used are presentations, lectures, practice, questions and answers, discussions, simulations, and pair or group work. The results of this training are that English teachers at the MGMP MAN Kab Jombang level are able to create innovative and contemporary media teaching materials to increase students' learning motivation in class. This research focuses on the types of cohesive devices which are used in speech. Cohesion is the relationship between one element and another in a written or spoken text. It is used to express ideas through grammar and vocabulary. This speech was held on Saturday, September 20 2014, at a special event for the HeForShe campaign. This study is considered descriptive qualitative. The research instrument is the writer because the writer is the one who is able and understands to analyse and obtain the data. The steps to collect the data are reading and understanding all the data many times. The next step is categorizing texts to be analyzed easier. The last step is describing the findings and concluding them. The findings of this study show that both cohesion types are found in the data. The types of grammatical cohesion found in the data are reference, substitution, and conjunction.  Both of lexical cohesion are found in the data, those are reiteration and collocation. It shows that the speaker uses grammatical and lexical methods.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the rhetorical devices used by the character of King George VI in The King’s Speech (2010) and to explain how these devices operate within the microstructural level of discourse. The research is grounded in the understanding that rhetoric plays a crucial role in shaping persuasive political communication. George VI was selected as the research subject because of his distinctive linguistic style—authoritative, composed, and emotionally resonant—particularly after overcoming his earlier speech difficulties. The study employs a qualitative research design using the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The data consist of selected excerpts from George VI’s speeches obtained from the film and its transcript. Data collection involved repeated viewing of the film, reading the transcript, and extracting utterances containing rhetorical features. The analysis followed two stages: classifying rhetorical devices based on Jones and Peccei’s (2004) categories—pronouns, euphemism, metaphor, rule of three, and parallelism—and examining microstructures through Van Dijk’s theory. The findings reveal that George VI consistently uses rhetorical devices to construct ethos, evoke pathos, and reinforce logos. Pronouns such as we and our are deployed to build national unity, while parallelism and the rule of three strengthen rhythm, emphasis, and clarity. Microstructural analysis demonstrates that these devices work together to create a macrostructural theme centered on unity, moral resilience, and national preparedness during wartime. This study highlights that rhetorical devices in political speech are not merely stylistic choices; they function as ideological tools that shape public perception and reinforce collective identity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the integration of Indonesian local cultural values in reading materials of English for Nusantara from an ethnolinguistic perspective. The background of this research lies in the importance of preserving local culture through contextual and culturally relevant English learning. The ethnolinguistic approach is employed to identify and analyze how local cultural elements are represented in reading texts, including linguistic features, symbolic meanings, and socio-cultural representations. This research applies a case study method with qualitative descriptive analysis on the 9th-grade junior high school English textbook. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed by classifying emerging cultural values such as local wisdom, traditions, arts, and social practices. The results indicate that the textbook contains various local cultural values, including mutual cooperation, politeness, diversity, and heritage preservation; however, their integration remains partial and needs further reinforcement in the context of globalization. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for the development of more inclusive and culturally identity-oriented teaching materials.
