Abstract

Students of the Social Welfare Study Program at FISIP USU conducted a community service activity at Menara Kasih Indonesia Orphanage, aiming to enhance the learning interest and motivation of the children. This activity was carried out using an interactive and participatory question-and-answer method. The method was chosen for its effectiveness in fostering two-way communication, improving material comprehension, and encouraging children to be more active and confident in the learning process. The results of the activity showed that the question-and-answer approach successfully created an enjoyable learning atmosphere, motivated children to ask questions and think critically, and increased their enthusiasm for learning. Therefore, this method can be considered an effective strategy to support both cognitive and emotional development of children living in orphanages.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the quality of life of children at Al Marhamah Orphanage in Medan through social mentoring and capacity building in emotional and social development. The intervention employs a casework approach focused on addressing the emotional and social needs of the orphaned children, particularly a child with initials (A) who faces difficulties in social interaction. The process includes stages of engagement, assessment, intervention planning, implementation, evaluation, and termination. Through methods such as role-playing and motivational storytelling, (A) demonstrated increased confidence and improved communication skills over a three-week intervention period. Additionally, the activity strengthened communication and empathy between the mentor and the ward. It is hoped that this activity can serve as a model for human-centered and holistic social intervention efforts to empower orphaned children and contribute to social welfare development in Indonesia. This experience also enhanced the students' practical skills during fieldwork, fostering greater social awareness regarding the needs of underprivileged children.

The author has clients (individuals) who experience these problems. The clients consist of children who are still in elementary school (SD) grade 2. The author uses the Casework stage in his research from the preparation stage to the termination stage. After carrying out all the casework stages, the results expected by the author are that the orphanage children (clients) can show positive development and be able to face social situations better.

Abstract

Penulis melakukan praktikum I di Panti Asuhan Ar-Rahman.

Abstract

The author conducted practicum I at the Ar-Rahman Orphanage. The first practicum conducted by the author was to research the problems experienced by the orphanage children. The problems experienced by the orphanage children were the lack of a culture of socializing so that they had difficulty in learning in groups. This condition, which is exacerbated by the tendency of today’s children to be alone rather than interact, creates difficulties in group learning and has the potential to hinder their development. Seeing the urgency of this problem, the author was motivated to conduct a mini project with the main goal of increasing children’s interest in socializing, which is expected to have an impact on increasing their self-confidence. The clients who are the focus of this project are children from various levels of education, from Elementary School (SD) to Vocational High School (SMK). In this study, the author used a comprehensive social casework approach, from the preparation stage to termination. The Ecomap method and focus group discussions (FGD) were chosen to collect data and understand the existing social dynamics. After going through all these stages, the expected result is that the orphanage children can return to cultivating healthy social interactions. Thus, they will not only be more adaptable in learning at school, but also able to create an environment free from bullying behavior. This project is expected to be an important foundation for the development of essential life skills for the future of orphanage children.

Abstract

This journal presents a case study regarding the micro-social intervention practices undertaken by Ivana a USU FISIP Social Welfare student in handling a case of exclusion experienced by V, a 4-year-old girl in foster care. V became a victim of exclusion as a result of his reactive nature towards the treatment of his peers, who were later deemed “stupid” by the nursing home environment. The intervention focused on providing individualized support to V, education of the nursing home environment to foster empathy and acceptance, as well as strengthening the caregiver role. Micro-intervention methods that included the stages of engagement, assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, evaluation, and termination were applied. Companion results showed there were positive changes on V, such as increased confidence and acceptance of the care environment, as well as increased caregiver persistence. This case study reflects that children with foster care backgrounds have great potential that is highly dependent on how the environment shapes them, and that social welfare science can be a tool of real change on the ground.
