Abstract

This study aimed at figuring out the access of Indonesian students to English and figuring out the difference of scanning skill possessed by bilingual students and monolingual students. The subject of this study was 31 2nd semester students from Denpasar Tourism Academy, Bali. The data was collected through a questionnaire and a provided test. The result of the questionnaire shows that students have more access to English through films, listening to English songs, computer games and their mobile phone when they are chatting. From the questionnaire is also found that 42% of the students were monolingual -they use Bahasa only at school and at home- and 58% of the students were bilingual –they use Bahasa and local language-. The result of the test shows that students who are monolingual in that school outperform the bilingual with the average score is 78.00, meanwhile the bilingual students have the average score with score 64.00. It implies that the monolingual students can answer easily the questions given by the teacher than the bilingual students because the use of Bahasa Indonesia only helps them to understand the instruction

Abstract

Sustainable tourism development is becoming an international commitment to ensure the sustainability development for social welfare. Bali has experienced significant development growth in the past 20 years. The growth of the tourism development directly led to the development of the tourism village in Bali. This cannot be separated due to the community involvement. One of the tourism villages that experienced significant growth and development in Bali is Panglipuran tourism village. This research was designed with the aim of identifying and analyzing the influence of tourism information exposure on Community Involvement. Closed questionnaire technique was used to collect the data with measurement scale using Likert scale. There were 100 respondents used in this research. SmartPLS software was used to analyze the data. The results obtained from the Path Coefficients table show X à Y values of 22,985, which means that tourism information exposure has a positive and significant effect on community involvement in the development of Panglipuran Tourism Village.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis referensi anafora dan katafora dalam dialog Netflix Series Locke and Key. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Ruslan Mitkov (2013) untuk enam jenis referensi anafora: pronominal anaphoric, lexical now anaphoric, noun anaphoric, verb anaphoric, adverb anaphoric, zero anaphoric. Teori Yule (1996) untuk referensi cataphora. Metode kualitatif yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini dimana data diambil dari serial dialog Locke and Key yang dapat diakses dari website resmi Netflix. Analisis menunjukkan dalam seri ini dengan perhitungan data 58 temuan dengan klasifikasi. 26 references in pronominal anaphoric, 12 references in lexical noun phrase, 2 references in noun anaphoric, 3 references in verb anaphoric, 3 references in adverb anaphoric, 2 references in zero anaphoric and 10 references in cataphora.Kata kunci: Pragmatic, Anaphora and cataphora reference, Netflix series.AbstractThis study aims to find out the types of anaphora and cataphora references in dialogue Netflix Series Locke and Key. Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between applied linguistics and language discourse analysis in English language teaching (ELT). It explores the significance of these fields in enhancing language learning and teaching practices. The article discusses the theoretical foundations of applied linguistics and language discourse analysis. This study shows that applied linguistics and language discourse analysis share a close relationship as they both investigate language use and its practical applications. To effectively implement applied linguistics and language discourse analysis in English language teaching, it is essential to recognize the diversity of students' linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This can be achieved through a variety of approaches, including the use of discourse in language teaching and cultural responsive teaching. Applied linguistics and language discourse analysis make significant contributions to English Language Teaching (ELT) by providing insights, frameworks, and practical applications that enhance language learning and teaching processes. The significant contributions that applied linguistics and language discourse analysis have made to English Language Teaching (ELT), there is a strong call for continued research and implementation of these approaches in language teaching contexts. Furthermore, future research should focus on the effectiveness of different approaches and techniques in promoting applied linguistics and language discourse analysis in English language teaching.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the category and the mapping of the source and target domains of the environmental metaphors in Holmes and Ammer’s metaphor collection. The cognitive linguistics approach used a descriptive qualitative approach to find out the metaphors. Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory was used in this study. To conceptualise the relationships between the source and target domains and their meaning, the mapping was used to explain it. The study found nine data: four belong to structural metaphors, three belong to orientational metaphors, and two from ontological metaphors. The environmental category found were animals, plants, oceanic, weather, and terrestrial ecosystem.

Abstract

This paper examines the role of applied linguistics of language attrition in bilingual school. It explores the field of applied linguistics, with a particular emphasis on the role of language attrition in bilingual educational environments. This study discusses the theoretical foundations of applied linguistics and language attrition. Qualitative descriptive method is used to analyze the data. The result of this study shows that applied linguistics has an important role to solving the problems caused by language attrition. The research, grounded in theoretical frameworks such as Applied Linguistics, Language Attrition, the Matrix Language Frame (MLF) Hypothesis, and Sociolinguistic Perspective, provides a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms of language attrition. The significance of applied linguistics in addressing language attrition is emphasized by the study. It offers research methods, theoretical underpinnings, and useful tactics for language preservation and improvement. Community-based initiatives, educational interventions, and language assessment all benefit from applied linguistics. Additionally, it draws attention to the useful ramifications of language attrition in bilingual education and provides strategies for successful interventions that preserve linguistic diversity.

Abstract

Program Studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Dhyana Pura yang memiliki fungsi dan peran melayani melalui pembelajaran, penelitian, dan pengabdian bagi sivitas akademika dan masyarakat umum telah melaksanakan kegiatan pelatihan bahasa Inggris dengan memfokuskan pada keterampilan berbicara dan menulis dengan topik Giving Direction bagi siswa SMKS Puri Wisata Pancasari. Keterampilan ini dipilih untuk membantu siswa lebih percaya diri dalam mengekspresikan ide dan pikiran mereka dalam bahasa Inggris baik secara lisan maupun tulisan. Topik Giving Direction dipilih sebagai tindak lanjut dari kebutuhan sekolah yang menginginkan anak didiknya mampu memberikan instruksi yang berkaitan dengan memberikan arah (Giving Direction) dalam percakapan sehari – hari. Dari pelatihan ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan bahasa Inggris ini dapat membantu siswa dalam memahami topik giving direction. Hal ini terlihat dari perbedaan nilai rata-rata siswa saat mengerjakan pre-test dan post-test. Dimana nilai rata-rata post-test lebih baik dibandingkan nilai rata-rata saat pre-test. Selain itu, siswa juga cukup mampu memberikan arahan sesuai dengan lembar kerja yang diberikan.

Abstract

This study examines the usefulness of AI technologies in addressing the linguistic and pragmatic abilities required for English Language Teaching (ELT) in the tourism industry. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the study assesses important aspects, strengths and weaknesses of widely used AI language learning Tools, Duolingo and ELSA Speak. The results show that although these tools are excellent at offering accessibility, adaptive learning pathways, and individualized feedback, they frequently lack industry-specific information, cultural sensitivity, and collaborative learning opportunities—all of which are vital for the tourism industry. These two widely used artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for learning foreign languages in Indonesia only concentrate on grammatical correctness; they fall short in addressing contextualized conversation and intercultural communication in tourism contexts. By bridging the gap between educational ideas and technology, this research advances applied linguistics by providing useful suggestions for educators, curriculum developers, and AI tool creators. Future research should focus on integrating intercultural communication training into AI tools, evaluating their long-term impact on tourism learners’ professional performance and exploring ethical considerations in advancing applied linguistics tailored to professional domains like tourism.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze the inflectional process towards the words in “On My Way” song’s lyric by Alan Walker feat. Sabrina Carpenter and Farukko. The study employed the descriptive-qualitative method to understand the inflectional process without numerical data. The data, which sourced from the lyrics of “On My Way” song, were collected through documentation, content-analysis, and interview techniques. Inflectional morphology was used to analyze the data through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verifying. The result showed that 16 inflected words were found, which the words underwent conjugation were found the most, followed by gender and plurality.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between introvert and extrovert personality types and their preferred methods for learning English speaking skills among student of the ULW department at SMK Wira Harapan. The study was motivated by observation that different student exhibit varying preferences in learning strategies that may or may not align with their personality traits. This study using mix-method, qualitative research used interviews and quantitative use personality tests based on the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire to categorize students’ personalities. Data were analyzed by classifying students’ learning methods according to Brown’s (2008) speaking categories: imitative, intensive, responsive, interactive, and extensive. The result show that extrovert student predominantly used interactive and responsive methods, involving others through conversations with friends, teacher, tourists, or strangers. Introvert student tended to prefer imitative and intensive methods, practicing speaking alone by repeating lyrics, shadowing film dialogues, or reading aloud. However, there were exceptions: some extrovert student preferred learning alone with extensive and imitative methods, while some introverts occasionally engaged in brief interactions. These findings indicate that learning methods are influenced not only by personality but also by personal motivation and learning context. The study concludes that interactive methods are most effective for improving student’ speaking abilities, as most student who achieved better fluency practiced English by directly interacting with others, it suggested that teacher more interactive activities in the classroom to boost students’ confidence and speaking competence.
