Abstract

This research examines the use of swear words found in the lyrics of songs from album “The Sailor” 2019 by Rich Brian. It employs qualitative analysis to categorize and explore swear words, using frameworks by Wardhaugh (2006) for classification and Rothwell (1973) for purposes. Seven profanity categories are identified as mother in-law, animal, sex, death, excretion, bodily function, and religious matters. The study uncovers five purposes for profanity use in the songs: to get attention, to discredit someone or something, to provoke, to create interpersonal identification, to provide catharsis. Analyzing 89 instances, 11 profanity types are found, with "fuck" being most frequent (35 times). The prevalent purpose is to “provide catharsis.” Swear words’ presence underscores its societal significance, revealing diverse meanings based on users and contexts. This research illuminates sociolinguistic aspects of rap songs and swear words’ role in today's society.

Abstract

Abstract

Tourism English competence is increasingly essential in global tourism environments, where effective communication requires more than linguistic accuracy—it demands intercultural awareness, cultural interpretation, and context-sensitive interaction. Conventional language instruction that focuses primarily on grammar and vocabulary has proven inadequate for preparing learners to meet the pragmatic, sociocultural, and professional communication needs of the tourism industry. This study proposes a triadic model, an interdisciplinary pedagogical framework that integrates humanities, applied linguistics, and tourism studies to enhance students’ Tourism English competence in a comprehensive and culturally informed manner. The model was implemented with forty-seven vocational students and tourism practitioners in Bali and assessed through pre- and post-test measures across four domains of communicative competence. The results revealed substantial improvements across linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic competencies, underscoring the effectiveness of culturally grounded, communicatively oriented, and practice-integrated instruction. These findings indicate that the triadic model provides a robust and transformative framework for Tourism English education, particularly in culturally rich destinations where professional communication hinges on the integration of language proficiency, cultural literacy, and service excellence.

Abstract

Abstract

Waste is unwanted residual material after the end of a process. The problem of waste has become a global issue that is a threat to the environment if it is not properly managed. Based on data from the Klungkung Regency Environmental Service in 2019, from four sub-districts in Klungkung Regency namely Dawan, Banjarangkan, Klungkung, and Nusa Penida, the volume of waste per day is more than 115,000 kg/person/day from a population of more than 230 thousand people, when compared production average waste production weighing 0.5 kg per person/day. Meanwhile, in terms of composition, the highest amount of waste is organic waste (68%), dust, rock and the like (8%), glass and plastic bottles 7%, followed by sheet plastic 5% and plastic 4%. The results of the analysis and depiction on the graph of the survey results were 4 (four) villages that had a high percentage of segregation, namely Semarapura Kauh Village (83.33%), followed by Semarapura Tengah (82.23%), followed by Semarapura Kangin Village (78.87. %) and Semarapura Kaja (75.21%). The results of this study prove that two locations have a very low level of sorting waste (less than 50%), namely Jempriring street in Semarapura Klod (47.61%), Rama street (42.11%), and Puputan street in Semarapura Kangin (44.73%). From this research, it can be concluded that public awareness of sorting waste in the two locations is still lacking.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze paragraph coherence in students’ proposal assignments, focusing on cohesion and coherence. It employed a descriptive qualitative approach within the field of linguistics. The data source consists of student proposal documents, while the data consist of paragraphs from the background and literature review sections. Data were collected through documentation, supported by observation and note-taking. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, classification, analysis, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the level of paragraph coherence in students’ writing is relatively low. Four main forms of incoherence were identified: overly long sentences, weak coherence, unclear references, and excessive repetition. Overly long sentences reduce clarity, while weak coherence is characterized by illogical relationships between ideas. Additionally, the use of unclear references leads to ambiguity, and excessive repetition results in ineffective and monotonous paragraphs. Among these four aspects, coherence problems were found to be the most dominant. The study concludes that students need to improve their ability to construct coherent paragraphs, particularly in developing ideas logically, using references appropriately, and varying lexical elements. Therefore, more focused instruction in academic writing is necessary to enhance the quality of paragraph coherence in proposal writing.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of applied linguistics principles in the teaching of Tourism English for travel agents within an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) framework at Dhyana Pura University. The research aims to examine the extent to which instructional practices align with the communicative needs of travel agents and how such practices support the development of students’ communicative competence. A qualitative descriptive design was employed with data collected through classroom observation, documentation, and analysis of students’ written tasks. The data were analyzed using an integrated framework combining ESP components and communicative competence, including linguistic, sociolinguistic, pragmatic, and discourse aspects. The findings reveal that while Tourism English instruction incorporates relevant vocabulary and basic communicative tasks, its alignment with real-world professional contexts remains partial. Students demonstrate moderate linguistic competence but face challenges in grammatical accuracy, sociolinguistic appropriateness, pragmatic effectiveness, and discourse organization. These limitations indicate that instruction has not yet fully integrated communicative competence into authentic task-based learning. This study highlights the need for a more holistic pedagogical approach that integrates ESP principles with applied linguistics insights. It contributes to the development of Tourism English instruction by emphasizing the importance of authentic tasks, pragmatic awareness, and discourse-level competence in preparing students for professional roles as travel agents.

Abstract

Bali's tourism industry heavily relies on international visitors, making English proficiency essential for tour guides who serve as cultural ambassadors. This qualitative study examines the relationship between applied linguistics principles and the English communication skills of tour guides at PT. Indo Bali Tours. Through semi-structured interviews and observations, the study explores key linguistic aspects, including vocabulary usage, discourse structuring, and pragmatic competence. Findings indicate that a lack of specialized tourism vocabulary often leads to oversimplification of complex cultural and historical narratives. Additionally, language anxiety negatively impacts fluency and engagement. These insights underscore the need for structured, tourism-specific language training programs that integrate applied linguistics principles to enhance communication effectiveness. By bridging the gap between applied linguistics and the tourism industry, this study offers practical recommendations for improving English proficiency among tour guides, ultimately enriching the visitor experience.
