Abstract

This study is aimed to know the EFL students’ perceptions of literacy activities for students’ interest in reading at SMA Negeri 12 Medan. A total of 265 eleventh grade students of XI P 1 until XI P 9 at SMA Negeri 12 Medan were involved in this study. This research used a descriptive qualitative design. The researcher used questionnaire technique to collect the data, the Likert Scale. The result of this research showed that most of the students’ perceptions are positive, as many as 210 (79,48%) of the 265 students, this shows that more than half of the students’ perceptions of literacy activities are positive, 127 (48,20%) students’ perceptions of students’ reading interest are positive and only 107 (40,69%) students’ perceptions of reading interest are negative. This research also showed that there are 253 (95,35%) students’ perceptions of interaction on literacy activiies for students’ interest in reading are satisfied. The frequency of students’ activities on reading and what the read affect their perception of literacy activities. Students’ literacy activities showed their interest in reading through their motivation in completing their sources for literacy activities. It can be concluded that most of the EFL students’ perception of literacy activities for students’ reading interest in Reading are positive.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the Effect of Taking English Club Extracurricular Activity on Student’s Writing and Speaking Ability at SMA St. Thomas 2Medan. The methodology of the research was Quantitative research. The technique of collecting the data are writing test and speaking test. The findings showed whether there were significant effects or not on students’ writing and speaking ability. The effect has been proved from the result of the pre-test and post-test. The researcher compared the result of the pre-test and post-test. If the result of the post-test was higher than the pre-test, it meant that English club extracurricular activity was affected. The writing result shows the difference between the mean score of the pre-test and post-test after conducting treatment where the mean score of students’ writing ability on the pre-test is 5,79 and the post-test is 8,47. After analysing the result of the pre-test and post-test by using a formula, it has gotten a percentage of about 46,28 % of students’ improvement. It indicates that applying English Club Extracurricular Activity is effective to be used in learning writing and in Speaking ability, the result  shows the difference between the mean score of the pre-test and post-test after conducting treatment where the mean score of students’ speaking ability on the pre-test is 3,05 and the post-test is 4,76. After analysing the result of the pre-test and post-test by using a formula, it has gotten a percentage of about 56,06 % of students’ improvement. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher concludes that applying English Club Extracurricular Activity is effective in improving the students’ writing and speaking skills

Abstract

This research was conducted based on some problems in learning English especially in vocabulary and grammar. It was also aimed to find out students’ vocabulary and grammar who are taught by using Board GameTechnique and students’ vocabulary and grammar who are taught without using Board Games and find out whether there was any significant effect of using Board Game on the tenth-grade students’ ability in vocabulary and grammar at SMA Kristen Immanuel. In this quasi-experimental design research, the researcher took two of 2 classes as the sample, the experimental class with 20 students in it, and the control class with 20 students as well. The research method was pre-test and post-test of the experimental research. The data collection technique was pre-test and post-test score result. The data were analyzed by using compare means paired sample T-test by comparing the result of pre-test and post-test design, and t-test to know the significant effect in students’ English vocabulary mastery after using Board Game. The result showed there was a significant different between pretest and post test mean. Ho was rejected because significance level was < 0.05. Therefore, there was a significant effect of using board game towards students’ vocabulary mastery of the research. The research of data analysis showed that there was a positive effect of using Board Games on students’ vocabulary and grammar. In which in vocabulary,  the t-obtained had a higher value than the t-table either at 5% or 1% significance levels (1,68595 < 4,174> 2,42857). Therefore, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted; or there is a significant difference in using Board Games on student’s vocabulary and grammar ability of tenth grade students. The result of grammar, the condition of the experimental class was getting better. The students were more active in English learning process. In summing up it may be stated that using Board Game can effect the students‟ grammar mastery and students learning activities at the tenth grader of SMA Kristen Immanuel Medan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hasil dari penggunaan pendekatan komunikatif untuk meningkatkan penguasaan berbicara siswa. Peneliti melakukan penelitian di Sekolah Menengah Pertama Gajah Mada Medan. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan penelitian kuantitatif eksperimental. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah kelas IX-A (sebagai kelas eksperimen) dan kelas IX-B (sebagai kelas kontrol), dengan jumlah siswa 20 orang untuk masing-masing kelompok. Peneliti melakukan pengajaran eksperimental dan tes berbicara dengan menceritakan pengalaman pribadi untuk mengumpulkan data. Setelah mengumpulkan data, penulis melakukan analisis data. Hasil dari penelitian ini dapat dilihat sebagai berikut: t-hitung > t-tabel (p = 0.1) dengan derajat kebebasan (df) = 38. Hal ini berarti 9,179 > 1,21 (p=0,1) dengan df 38. Hal ini berarti bahwa penggunaan pendekatan komunikatif berpengaruh secara signifikan terhadap penguasaan berbicara siswa. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, siswa kelas eksperimen mencapai skor peningkatan nilai (dari 52,75 menjadi 85,25) sedangkan hasil kelas kontrol hanya hanya mengalami sedikit peningkatan (dari 52 menjadi 74,1). Jadi, para guru di sekolah dapat menggunakan metode pengajaran ini dalam meningkatkan penguasaan berbicara siswa.

Abstract

This thesis examines the modalities used in the speeches of the three presidential candidates after receiving serial numbers in 2023. By analyzing the clauses they convey, this thesis aims to understand the ideologies of the three presidential candidates, as well as how they make their speeches. delivered to convince the public. The research method used is descriptive qualitative using documentation as a data collection method. The analysis was carried out by referring to Halliday's (2014) SFL theory. The focus of this research is on modality sentences in the speeches of the three presidential candidates. Researchers found 38 sentences that used modalities in the speeches of the three presidential candidates after receiving serial numbers in 2023. The modalities that the three presidential candidates often used in their speeches were obligation modulation, desire and probability modulation, where the three presidential candidates stated something that was considered mandatory and could not be done. bargained for and expressed his desire and confidence in holding the election. The dominant use of modulation in the speeches of the three presidential candidates, with the aim of inviting the audience to take certain actions together and influencing the audience in choosing a presidential candidate who can defend and advance the Indonesian state. It is hoped that the results of this research will help the public to see the strategies of the three presidential candidates in influencing the public through their speeches so that the public can choose them.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explore how critical discourse analysis is realized in editorial local newspaper in Medan. The analysis is grounded based on Norman Fairclough’s assumption on critical discourse analysis that discussed three dimensions of analysis, such as micro, macro and meso. The data collected were the editorials of Medan local newspaper between June till December 2012, they are the editorial of Analisa, Andalas, Medan Bisnis, Orbit, Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB), Waspada that observed three major topic of discussions like topic on politics, state officials, and social phenomena. Findings are in micro analysis includes language use such as the realization of genre, passive voice, collective noun and naming individual, in macro-analysis shows that the editorials position to control, and in meso analysis are the editorial’s role in giving his thought. These findings shows that the Medan local newspaper have just enjoyed for free press in delivering the news. Key words: Micro, macro, meso analysis.

Abstract

Animation video is an alternative media to teach listening at senior high-level students. The purpose of this study to improve the listening skill of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat at Kabupaten Langkat in the academic year 2024/2025. This study used a classroom action research method by applying animation video as an alternative teaching media. The population of this study is the eleventh-grade students consists of ten classes with a total number is 351 students. The sample of this study is 36 students (XI IPA 1). The researchers used purposive sampling to achieve the aim of study. To collect the data the researchers distributed multiple choice of listening test. The finding of this research showed that in pre-test, the students got mean score 43,75. In cycle 1, the mean score is 48,6. In cycle 2, the mean score is 60,5 or categorized moderate. In post-test, the mean score is 75,8 categorized good. So, it can be concluded that the use of animation video improved the eleventh-grade students’ listening skill at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat Kabupaten Langkat.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the levels of speaking anxiety among 11th-grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Meranti Kabupaten Asahan. Using a mixed-method approach, the study employs the modified Horwitz Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) to quantify anxiety levels and qualitative analysis to explore the specific types of anxiety and their triggers. This research used probability sampling to select 105 samples from a population of 142 students from 11th grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Meranti for the 2023 – 2024 academic year The findings revealed that (1)) the majority of students had very low anxiety levels (50.50%), moderately low anxiety (19.00%), moderate anxiety (17.10%), moderately high anxiety (9.50%), and high anxiety (3.90%) levels. The study concluded that speaking anxiety is a complex issue shaped by a combination of these internal and external variables.

Abstract

Pemimpin politik identik dengan pemimpin negara yang selalu menyampaikan pidato dalam kegiatan tertentu. Pidato yang disampaikan mengandung tujuan dan makna tertentu. Penyajian informasi oleh pembicara sering mengalami kesalahpahaman tafsiran makna dan tujuan dari pembicara oleh pendengar. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti fokus pada pidato presiden Joe Biden tahun 2024 dengan tujuan untuk meneliti dan menemukan jenis-jenis tindak tutur dalam pidato tersebut. Dalam pidato Joe Biden, peneliti menggunakan teori ilokusi berdasarkan fungsinya. Menurut Leech dimana terdapat 4 tipe utama yaitu kolaboratif, kompetitif, ramah, dan konflik untuk menentukan jenis tindak ilokusi yang terdapat dalam pidato Joe Biden dan mencari tipe dominan yang digunakan dalam pidatonya. Metode penelitian ini menerapkan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti menemukan bahwa keempat jenis fungsi tindak ilokusi terkandung dalam pidato Joe Biden. Data yang ditemukan sebanyak 94 tindak tutur ilokusi, yang terdiri atas: tipe kolaboratif sebanyak 45(47,8%) tuturan, tipe kompetitif sebanyak 24(25,8%) tuturan, tipe ramah tamah 13 (13,8%) tuturan, dan tipe konfliktif sebanyak 12(12,8%). Ini menandakan bahwa tindak tutur kolaboratif lebih banyak dalam pidato Joe Biden, memberikan pernyataan, melaporkan, mengumumkan dan memberikan instruksi bagi pendengar. Dari hasil penelitian ini memberikan pemahaman tentang makna dan arti ungkapan bagi pendengar dan juga pembicara dalam mengolah ungkapan.

Abstract

A Thesis, English Departement Teacher’s Training Faculty of HKBP Nommensen University This study aims to determine the results of using a communicative approach to improve students’ speaking skills. The researcher conducted the research at SMA Negeri 1 Sumbul. This study was carried out by Experimental quantitative research. The sample of this study was class XI-3 (the experimental class) and class XI-4 (the control class), with a total of 20 students for each group. The research conducted experimental teaching and speaking tests with stand-up comedy personal experience to collect data. The result from this research can be seen as follows: t-coun t> t-table (p = 0.1) with the degree of freedom (df) = 38. This means 6,665 > 1.21 (p=0.1) with df 38. This means that the use of a communicative approach has a significant effect on students’ speaking skills. Using the communicative approach as a teaching method through stand-up comedy in class activities improved students’ speaking skills.
