Abstract

This research discusses transitivity in Prabowo Subianto's speech. This research aims to analyze Prabowo Subianto's speech at the 20th Shangri-La Dialogue conference in Singapore, focusing on identifying transitivity processes, participants, and dominant circumstances. Descriptive qualitative research, it aims to reveal the types of processes, participants, and circumstances in Prabowo's speech. This research uses Halliday's systemic functional linguistics theory. The results show five types of transitivity processes in speech: material, mental, relational, verbal, and existential. The analysis shows that in Prabowo's speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue Conference in Singapore, some clauses can be classified based on the type of transitivity process. The number includes 21 clauses for material processes, 15 for mental processes, 28 for relational processes, 5 for verbal processes, and 5 for existential processes. The total number of clauses analyzed is 74, with division based on transitivity components such as process, participant, and circumstance. The results showed that relational processes dominated Prabowo's speech with a percentage of 37.83%, which emphasized the relationship between entities such as the state and geopolitical powers. The participant analysis highlights the role of actors and goals in diplomacy with a percentage of 29.37%. In contrast, in the study of circumstances, breadth elements were found at a rate of 25.64%, which provided context and depth to the discussion of global issues.

Abstract

In writing skills, learners would be able to put their feelings, ideas, arguments, willingness, and their minds into words, sentences, and even stories. The aims of this study are to identify the students’ grammatical, and mechanical errors, and dominant errors and to figure out the factors that caused the grammatical and mechanical errors made by first-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Amandraya in writing recount text. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive text. The subject of research is first grade accounting of SMK Negeri 1 Amandraya and object was grammatical and mechanical errors. The samples in this study was be first-class accounting 24 students who are learning English subject at SMK Negeri 1 Amandraya. The result of this research based on grammatical errors was 141 errors, based on the mechanical error were 9 errors, the dominant error in writing recount text were misinformation 48%. Some factors that lead to the error because of limited of vocabulary, lack interest of learning English subject, and not mastering tenses, using of punctuation.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa internasional dan sangat penting bagi kehidupan manusia terutama dalam pengucapan bahasa Inggris. Pelafalan adalah bunyi yang dihasilkan dan didengar oleh pendengar dan terdiri dari dua macam yaitu vokal dan konsonan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan pengucapan mahasiswa dan untuk mengetahui jenis kesalahan apa saja yang terjadi dalam pengucapan bahasa Inggris pada mahasiswa tahun ketiga Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan berdasarkan Aplikasi ELSA Speak. Desain penelitian untuk penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Data diambil dari dokumentasi dan tes pronounciation dengan menggunakan Aplikasi ELSA Speak. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan. Penulis mengambil sampel yang terdiri dari 15 siswa. Data menunjukkan bahwa siswa memperoleh skor 58,02, kategori hampir benar dan jenis kesalahan yang dominan terjadi pada huruf vokal adalah i, pada konsonan adalah k dan siswa lebih sering melakukan kesalahan berdasarkan teori dari Bonaventure yaitu Overgeneralization.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah Analisis Makna Konotatif Pidato Jokowi Tentang RAPBN 2022. Desain penelitian adalah deskriptif kualitatif dan diuraikan dengan kata-kata. Penelitian ini tergolong dalam penelitian deskriptif kualitatif, dalam penelitian ini metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menganalisis makna konotatif pidato presiden Joko Widodo. Tujuan penelitian adalah menganalisis makna konotatif pidato Jokowi tentang RAPBN. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah data yang dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan observasi. Dari penjelasan yang telah dibahas sebelumnya tentang makna konotatif pidato jokowi tentang RAPBN dapat disimpulkan bahwa: ada 3 jenis konotatif yaitu positif negatif dan netral. Kesimpulan diambil berdasarkan masalah penelitian. Pertanyaan pertama berkaitan dengan jenis-jenis makna konotatif dan pertanyaan kedua berkaitan dengan makna konotatif dalam pidato jokowi tentang RAPBN. berdasarkan analisis data dan mencari hasil data terdapat temuan penelitian ini: Dari data pada bab IV 3 jenis makna konotatif ditemukan 30 kata yang berkonotasi positif 16 kata yang berkonotasi negatif dan 8 data yang berkonotasi netral konotasi menurut teori Michael Halley. Jenis makna konotasi positif paling dominan digunakan dalam pidato Jokowi tentang RAPBN 2022.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul “An Error Analysis on The Use of Simple Past Tense in Writing Narrative at The Ninth Grade Student of SMP HKBP Sidorame”. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui jenis kesalahan tata bahasa dan faktor yang menyebabkan kesalahan dalam tata bahasa yang dilakukan oleh siswa kelas sembilan SMP HKBP Sidorame. Rancangan penelitian menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang dilakukan di kelas sembilan SMP HKBP Sidorame dan melibatkan kelas IX yang dibagi menjadi 2 bagian sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol dengan teknik yang berbeda: sampel penulisan dan kesalahan tata bahasa lampau. Peneliti ingin mengetahui kesalahan yang sering dilakukan oleh siswa dalam tata bahasa inggris. Total peserta penelitian yaitu 90 siswa. Kelompok eksperimen terdiri dari 25 siswa. Tes yang diberikan berupa statistik deskriptif dan inferensial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kata kerja regular bentuk lampau terdiri dari 45% dari total kesalahan. Akibat dari kesalahan tata bahasa yang umum terjadi adalah siswa tidak memahami hingga dapat memahaminya. Akhir penelitian bertujuan agar siswa mampu menggunakan bentuk lampau dalam kegiatan sehari-hari untuk meningkatkan dan membantu guru dalam belajar. Pemahaman komprehensif terkait tantangan tata bahasa siswa membantu menginformasikan strategi pengajaran yang ditargetkan untuk mengatasi masalah khusus secara efektif dan meningkatkan keterampilan menulis naratif siswa

Abstract

The difficulties of writing research paper devokes grammatical metaphors in the perspectives of SFL to be applied in academic writing. This paper presents the process type and functions of ideational grammatical metaphor towards the students' writing research paper. The research design was applied by descriptive qualitative deployed on the English students’ writing. The findings deployed the process type of nominalization in ideational grammatical metaphor on the students' research papers was dominant in the material process and relational process. The function realization of deployment in transcategorisation of process to thing is the highest frequency on the clauses and followed to transcategorisation of process to quality. The frequency shows that several weaknesses encompassing the ability to employ grammatical meanings and the use of lexical cohesion. The research present a strategy for English learners and teachers to enhance writing qualities and language detections as an innovation in managing lexical varieties.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of using the Genre-based learning method on students' writing ability. This research was prepared using quantitative experimental research with a sample of class IX students at SMP N 1 Paranginan. The number of samples in this study was 40 students and was divided into two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class. The data collection instrument uses a writing test and the data collection technique uses a pre-test and post-test, while data was analyzed by using T-test Formula. From the research that has been conducted, it was found that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test. In the experimental class, the score was 53,05 and the post-test score was 81.4, while in the control class, the pre-test score was 56,1 and the post-test score was 80.95. So, it can be concluded that the use of the genre-based learning method has a great influence on improving students' writing skills at SMP N 1 Paranginan.

Abstract

This thesis is about an analysis of students difficulties on writing recount text in the eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 21 Medan. The objectives of research are to analyze the student's difficulties on writing recount text in the eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 21 Medan And to identify the factors causing students difficulties in writing recount text. This research was conducting by applying Descriptive Qualitative research. The Researcher took 15 students of eleventh in getting the data. The instrument of the collecting data was the writing test and interview. The technique of collecting data was the researcher explained what the recount text, generic structure, language features and giving the example of recount text. The researcher asked the eleventh grade students wrote a recount text that chooses by themselves in 60 minutes and the researcher collected the paper, after that the researcher do the interview directly to all student. the result of the analysis of students difficulties showed that majority of the students at eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 21 Medan still low in writing recount text. it could be seen from the analysis the test from content of the results of the percentage is 15%, organization of the result on the percentage is 19%, language use of the percentage in the result is 26%, vocabulary of the percentage in the result is 24% and mechanic of the percentage in the result is 16%. Based on the result of analysis of student difficulties showed that majority of the students factors are difficulties of content such as the lack of experience to developing ideas. Difficulties of organization, students lack of structure to organize ideas and story elements in a clear and logical manner. Difficulties of vocabulary, the lack of word in English and limitation of vocabulary to translate the meanings of certain words. Difficulties of language use, lack of grammar such as use of sentence structure, the use of nouns, verbs, and aspects of grammar. And the last Difficulties of Mechanic, lack of knowledge about punctuation marks such as commas periods and each other formats. The analysis shows that students still make mistakes in all five aspects of the 15 students who were used as participants, none of them succeeded in writing recount correctly. so it can be concluded that students are still difficult in writing recount text.

Abstract

This study focused on the effect of self-assessment strategy on students’ writing recount text. The objective of this study was to know the effect of self-assessment on students’ writing recount text at eight grade. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was the eight student of SMP Swasta Advent 5 Medan. Two classes were taken as the sample of this research. The class VIII-1 was as the experimental group and the class VIII-2 was as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using self-assessment strategy, while the control group was taught by traditional teaching method. The instrument of collecting data was writing test and field note. The result of this study shows that the use of self-assessment strategy is effective for students in writing recount text. From the result, the students’ score of the experimental group in the post-test was higher than the students in the pre-test. The mean score of post-test in the experimental group 76.55 was higher than mean score of the control group 60.88. It was really good significant effect by using self-assessment strategy. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The data were collected by giving pre-test and post- test. After giving the treatment, the result of paired sample t-test, obtained that sig. (2-tailed) or the p value was 0.00 from the df 34 and the significance level (α) is 0.05. Since 0.00 is smaller than significance level (α) 5%. The null hypothesis is rejected. In other word, the hypothesis saying that the mean after the treatment is smaller than before the treatment. It means that self-assessment strategy can be used as teaching approach alternative to enrich students writing at eight grade. Keywords: Self-Assessment Strategy, Recount text, Writing.

Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the forms and the roles of phatic communion employed by characters in the movie entitled Me Before You. This research used the pragmatic approach. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The dialogs containing the phatic communion were taken as data. The result of the analysis can be seen as follows: First, there are four forms of phatic communion employed by the characters in the movie entitled Me Before You, namely ritual words that are exchanged when people meet, standard topic of conversation, supportive chat and meaningless word or misunderstood words. The total number of forms of phatic communion are; Ritual words that are exchanged when people meet 3 utterances = 9.00%, Standard Topic of Conversation 11 utterances = 34.37%, Supportive Chat 14 utterances = 43.75%, Meaningless words or even misunderstood words 4 utterances = 12.88%. Second, there are three roles of phatic communion, namely opening phase, middle phase, closing phase. The total number of roles of phatic communion are; Opening phase 3 utterances = 60.00%, Middle phase 1 utterances = 20.00, and Closing phase 11 utterances = 20.00%. Phatic communion occurs both in formal or informal situation and the relationship between the participants can be intimate or distant. It can happen in both higher and lower status. The atmosphere is commonly good but if the atmosphere is bad, phatic communion utterances will help to turn into the good one. The attitude of the participants while uttering phatic communion utterances is usually sympathetic. It can be seen from the low tone. At last, phatic communion functions to establish and maintain social relationship between people in society. Keywords: Pragmatics, Phatic Communion, Me Before You movie.
