Abstract

Indonesian people have a strong preference for food processed using cooking oil. However, the continuous reuse of cooking oil can pose health hazards and have negative environmental impacts if disposed of directly into the soil and waterways. Therefore, innovation is needed to process used cooking oil waste into a product with economic value. Used cooking oil used for cooking can be transformed into soap which is environmentally friendly and has economic value. Hence, this community service aims to reduce the volume of waste cooking oil and improve the local economy. One area in West Nusa Tenggara that has the potential for this product development is the village of Merembu. Out of 2084 families, 727 are still classified as poor. Therefore, there is a need for business opportunities to improve the economy in the village, one of which is by transforming waste cooking oil into soap products. Community service activities in Merembu Village were well received and received positive responses from Empowerment of Family Welfare (PKK) group in Merembu Village. The positive response is reflected in the results of the final evaluation carried out. This activity is a means for PKK group to increase their knowledge of the dangers and methods of processing used cooking oil so that it does not become a pollutant for the environment.

Abstract

High intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes several adverse effect such as erythema, sunburn, pigmentation, early senescence, and skin cancer. These effects can be prevented by using sun protection product. Wali (Brucea javanica L. Merr) is one of natural plants that contain phenol and flavonoid. These compounds are proven to have sunscreen effect. The purposes of this studies are to formulate and evaluate the effectivity of oil-in-water-type sunscreen cream using 1% ethanol extract of Wali seed. The sunscreen cream is developed by using a fusion method and the evaluation of the effectivity is conducted in vivo on the skin of mice (Mus musculus). The formulated sunscreen cream is then tested for its physical properties, including homogenity, pH, spreadability, adhesion, and stability. The effectivity of the formulated cream is also tested by observing the formation of erytema on the skin of mice (Mus musculus). Erythema appearing on the mouse skin is analyzed with ImageJ and SPSS v23 using the one way anova method. Abstract

Radikal bebas merupakan molekul sangat reaktif yang dapat menyebabkan kerusakan sel, kerusakan jaringan dan proses penuaan dini. Perlindungan terhadap serangan radikal bebas membutuhkan senyawa antioksidan. Juwet (Syzygium cumini L.) merupakan salah satu tumbuhan lokal yang dapat menjadi sumber antioksidan alami. Penggunaan daun juwet sebagai antioksidan akan lebih mudah dalam bentuk sediaan emulgel. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui aktivitas antiradikal bebas ekstrak daun juwet serta menformulasikannya menjadi emulgel. Penelitian yang dilakukan meliputi ekstraksi dengan metode maserasi menggunakan pelarut etanol 70%, lalu dilakukan uji kualitatif fitokimia dan uji aktivitas antiradikal bebas pada ekstrak. Setelah itu dilakukan formulasi emulgel, uji sifat fisik serta uji aktivitas antiradikal bebas pada emulgel dengan metode DPPH. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh menunjukan bahwa esktrak etanol daun juwet positif mengandung flavonoid, tanin dan polifenol serta memiliki aktivitas antiradikal bebas yang sangat kuat dengan nilai IC50 sebesar 40,36 ?g/mL dan sediaan emulgel ekstrak daun juwet memiliki aktivitas antiradikal bebas yang kuat dengan nilai IC50 sebesar 94,44 ?g/mL. Hasil uji sifat fisik dari formula sediaan emulgel telah memenuhi syarat pH, homogenitas,daya sebar, dan daya lekat.

Abstract

Glukomanan merupakan polisakarida yang tersusun oleh unit ?-D-glukosa dan ?-D-mannosa yang terikat dengan gugus asetil melalui ikatan b-1,4 dan b-1,6 glikosida. Glukomanan terdapat pada dinding sel beberapa spesies tumbuhan terutama diekstraksi dari umbi genus amorphophallus spp. Secara komersial, pemanfaatan glukomanan sangat luas yaitu khususnya dalam industri farmasi digunakan sebagai bahan pengisi, pengikat tablet, pengental, gelling agent, film former, coating materials, emulsifier, stabilizer dan drug delivery system. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk menentukan kadar glukomanan yang diekstraksi dari umbi porang di Nusa Tenggara Barat. Penelitian yang dilakukan meliputi pembuatan tepung porang, ekstraksi glukomanan menggunakan pelarut etanol 60% dan uji kuantitatif glukomanan dengan metode DNS (Dinitro Salisilic Acid) menggunakan instrumen spektrofotometer uv-vis. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh yaitu rendemen tepung glukomanan sebesar 66,26% dengan kadar glukomanan hasil pemurnian sebesar 38,5312±0,5%.

Abstract

Syzygium cumini (S. cumini) fruits have a high potential to be developed as medicine because of their polyphenol content. Polyphenol is easily degraded so that its stability needs to be increased through the formation of nanoencapsulation. The aim of this study was to determine the formula of SBJ nanoparticles which has good characteristics. The formula was determined using a pseudoternary phase diagram based on the %transmittant and %EE. Nano SBJ was characterized for % transmittant ,% EE, polydispersity index, and zeta potential. The formula of Nano SBJ obtained chitosan, SBJ extract, and Na TPP were 0.347%, 0.627%, and 0.047%, respectively. The characterization of Nano SBJ were % EE was 30.72%, the mean diameter of particles was 138.1 ± 7.9 nm, PdI was 0.839 ± 0.043, and zeta potential was 34.9 ± 1.2 mV. Nano SBJ has nano-sized particles and has good stability, but low in entrapment efficiency.

Abstract

The repeated use of cooking oil more than twice is still common in Indonesian society. However, used cooking oil can negatively affect health, being even more detrimental than saturated fatty acids. Additionally, it contributes to pollution in soil and water. One effective method for repurposing used cooking oil is by converting it into soap. This community service initiative aims to promote the utilization of used cooking oil in economically valuable products while reducing the amount of waste oil that is discarded into the environment. The training was conducted for PKK cadres in Bengkaung Village and facilitated by pharmacists, dermatologists, and students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Mataram. The soap-making process begins by adding charcoal to the used cooking oil for 72 hours. This step helps remove hazardous substances and unpleasant odors. Afterward, the oil is filtered and combined with essential soap-making ingredients, including sunflower oil, virgin coconut oil (VCO), olive oil, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and water. NaOH is critical for the saponification process, which transforms the oil into soap. To enhance the aesthetic value and benefits of the soap, ingredients like honey, yogurt, or natural dyes such as butterfly pea flowers can be incorporated. The mixture is then poured into molds and allowed to harden. Given the simple process and the ease of obtaining the necessary tools and materials, the PKK cadres in Bengkaung Village have shown enthusiasm for making soap from used cooking oil. This activity is expected to broaden their knowledge and provide business opportunities to help increase family income in the village.

Abstract

Brucea javanica seeds hold promise as a powerful antioxidant source, boasting a high phenol content (61.1927±0.1560 mg GAE/g sample) and an IC50 value of 64,703 ppm. However, the inherent polar and bulky nature of these phenols limits their absorption in the body, hindering their effectiveness. This research introduces phytosomes, a potential solution, derived from Brucea javanica seed extract. The phytosomes are prepared using sonication and thin-film hydration techniques, with optimized parameters for phospholipid concentration, processing speed, and rotary evaporator temperature. Different ratios of phospholipid to Brucea javanica extract (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 2:1) are evaluated to determine the optimal phytosome formulation. Encapsulation efficiency serves as the primary parameter for selection. Finally, the most promising phytosome is characterized for particle size, polydispersity index, vesicle morphology, and the complexity of the formed compounds using infrared spectroscopy. This study strives to develop an optimal phytosome formulation from Brucea javanica seeds with superior absorption, aiming to enhance the antioxidant's pharmacological effects and open new avenues in the healthcare field. Sifat polar dan bermolekul besar fenol menghambat absorpsinya. Penelitian ini menghadirkan fitosom dari ekstrak biji Brucea javanica untuk meningkatkan absorpsi. Fitosom diolah dengan metode sonikasi dan hidrasi lapis tipis, dengan optimasi konsentrasi fosfolipid, kecepatan, dan suhu rotary evaporator. Berbagai perbandingan fosfolipid dan ekstrak Brucea javanica (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, dan 2:1) dievaluasi untuk menentukan formula fitosom terbaik. Efisiensi penjerapan menjadi parameter utama. Fitosom dengan formula terbaik dikarakterisasi untuk mengetahui ukuran partikel, indeks polidispersitas, morfologi vesikel, dan kompleksitasnya dengan spektroskopi inframerah. Penelitian ini diharapkan menghasilkan formulasi fitosom optimal dari biji Brucea javanica dengan daya serap tinggi, meningkatkan efek farmakologisnya, dan membuka peluang baru di bidang kesehatan. Abstract

Improving the bioavailability of hydrophilic bioactive compounds in herbal medicines has become a key focus in pharmaceutical research, prompting interest in phytosome formulation strategies. This literature review examines how phytosome preparation methods influence entrapment efficiency (EE) to overcome this limitation. The study employed a literature review methodology, sourcing 13 peer-reviewed articles sourcing (2015–2025) from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct using keywords: phytosome, entrapment efficiency, herbal extract, thin-layer hydration, and antisolvent precipitation. Articles were selected based on inclusion criteria, namely studies discussing phytosome preparation methods, providing entrapment efficiency (EE) data, available in full-text format, published within the last 10 years, and written in either English or Indonesian. Analysis revealed that antisolvent precipitation consistently achieved high EE (>85%), while thin-layer hydration showed variable outcomes (14–99%) dependent on parameter optimization. Critical success factors included extract-phospholipid ratios (1:1–1:5), chemical interactions (hydrogen bonding), and temperature control (<60°C). This study concludes that optimized preparation methods significantly enhance phytosomal EE, recommending strict standardization of process parameters to advance herbal pharmaceutical development.

Abstract

Hidrokuinon adalah agen pemutih wajah yang sering digunakan dalam produk kosmetik. Senyawa ini bekerja dengan menghambat konversi DOPA menjadi melanin melalui penghambatan enzim tirosinase. Penggunaan hidrokuinon dapat menimbulkan efek samping seperti iritasi kulit, kemerahan, sensasi terbakar, okronosis, bahkan meningkatkan risiko kanker. Oleh karena itu, penggunaannya dilarang dalam produk kosmetik yang beredar di Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyajikan informasi komprehensif mengenai berbagai metode yang digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengukur kadar hidrokuinon dalam produk kosmetik. Metode penelitian dilakukan melalui studi literatur dari artikel nasional dan internasional. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode yang dapat digunakan untuk identifikasi hidrokuinon meliputi uji warna dan kromatografi lapis tipis, sedangkan pengukuran kadar dapat dilakukan dengan metode Kromatografi Cair Kinerja Tinggi (KCKT), Kromatografi Gas-Spektrometri Massa (GC-MS), Spektrofotometri UV-Vis, serta titrasi Serimetri.

Abstract

Lip balm is a preparation with a wax base that is applied to the lips to moisturize them so they aren’t easily dry and cracked. Lip balm, when used, is very dependent on its adhesive power and spreadability, which are influenced by the composition of the base and the additional ingredients. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum concentration of beeswax and lanolin in Lip balm preparations as wax and softening agents using the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method. Extraction of buni fruit was carried out by the maceration method using 80% ethanol solvent and 3% citric acid (85: 15). Data analysis was carried out using ANOVA to see the distribution of data on parameters of physical properties, and a one-sample T-test for confirmation analysis of the optimum formula composition. The results of the study obtained an extract yield of 41.534% and positively contained anthocyanins. The analysis results of physical properties using Design Expert v.13, the optimum concentration of beeswax was 12% and lanolin 4% with a desirability value is 1. The Lip balm with buni fruit extract, with the optimum formula, had a dense, homogeneous texture, brownish red with a peach aroma, and a pH of 4. Verification of the optimum formula showed no significant difference between the experimental response and the predicted response, with a value of melting point 53±1 oC; adhesive power 24.42±3.55 seconds; spread power 3.226±0.031 cm. The optimum formula produced physical properties that meet the specified requirements, and the verification results showed a match between the predicted response and the experimental results.
