Abstract

Basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L.) contain secondary metabolites as inhibitors of the growth of pathogenic microbes in the mouth, so they can be used as lozenges. The choice of binder in the formulation is very important, because it can affect the physical properties of the tablet. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of secondary metabolites in basil leaf extract and determine the best formula for lozenges of ethanol extract of basil leaves based on variations in gelatin binding agents. Basil leaves were extracted using the sonication method with 96% ethanol solvent and subjected to phytochemical screening (test tube and TLC). Tablets were formulated using the wet granulation method with variations of gelatin in formula 1 (5%), formula 2 (7.5%), and formula 3 (10%). The physical properties of the granules are evaluated and compressed. The resulting tablets were evaluated for physical properties. The results showed that basil leaves contained compounds belonging to the class of flavonoids, saponins and tannins. The results of the granule flow time test for formula 1 and 2 did not meet the requirements, formula 3 met the requirements for the Indonesian Pharmacopoeia Edition III. The angle of repose, settling, and granule water content tests (formula 1, 2, and 3) met the requirements of the Indonesian Pharmacopoeia Edition III. The results of tablet evaluation in the weight uniformity test for formulas 1, 2, and 3 were 257 mg ± 0.226; 248 mg ± 0.068 and 253 mg ± 0.157. Tablet hardness test of 3.721 kg ± 0.268; 4.221 kg ± 0.929 and 6.636 kg ± 1.035. Tablet friability test of 3.4% ± 0.152; 1.1% ± 0.264 and 0.9% ± 0.1. The disintegration time test was 7.6 minutes ± 2.452; 11 minutes ± 2.154 and 18.6 minutes ± 4.016. From this study it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of basil leaves has secondary metabolites of flavonoids, saponins and tannins. Variations in gelatin binder affect the physical properties of the tablet, where the concentration of gelatin binder is best in formula 3 (10%).

Abstract

The unemployment rate rises every year, leading people to seek information for the purpose of gaining and providing jobs, which can be achieved by attending university. Given its bright future prospects, pharmacy is a popular field of study. A pharmacist may work in the industrial sector; according to Ministry of Health data from 2019, Indonesia had up to 230 industry pharmaceuticals. The rise of Indonesia's pharmaceutical industry will require a huge number of employees, especially experienced pharmaceutical professionals. Unfortunately, the results of tracer studies for Pharmacy graduates from the University of Mataram who work in the industrial sector are still quite low. According to a similar survey, a lack of interest in pharmaceutical graduates can be related to a lack of knowledge about the pharmaceutical industry. The purpose of this community service activity is to encourage pharmacy students to work in the pharmaceutical industry. Service activities can be carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. The results of the activity showed that the participants were enthusiastic about the program, as seen in the way they engaged in asking questions and responding to the question from the committee. The result of the evaluation revealed that 93.2% of the participants planned to work in the pharmaceutical industry. As a result, this community service activity is seen to have the potential to help inspire and encourage pharmacy students to pursue careers in the pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract

Brucea javanica (L) Merr. has the potential to be developed as a topical application as a result of its high flavonoid content. However, advancements in pharmaceutical preparation are constrained by the chemicals' poor bioavailability when prepared conventionally. Nanoemulsion preparation has been an efficient method for enhancing topical preparation absorption. The previous studies show that the stable formulation of nanoemulsion depends on emulgator, especially tween. This study's objective is to create an ethanol extract of Brucea javanica (L) Merr. using tween 20 and tween 80 as emulsifying agent. A pseudo-ternary phase diagram was utilized to formulate the nanoemulsion formula. Physical characteristics such as particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, percent transmittance, drug load, viscosity, and pH were then analyzed for the nanoemulsion. At 15 sampling points, the formula tween 20 (surfactant):PEG 400 (cosurfactant) in a 1:1 ratio did not produce a clear preparation. In contrast, tween 80 with the same cosurfactant and ratio formed a formula that was transparent. The formula was then examined for its physical parameters, which included a particle size of 17.90.14 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.0970.012, a zeta potential of 84.63% transmittance, a drug load of 99.97%, a viscosity of 240 cp, and a pH of 7.194. According to the results, tween 80 is the most suited emulsifier for the production of Brucea javanica (L) Merr extract nanoemulsion. The study of physical attributes reveals that the nanoemulsion generated satisfies the criteria for nanoemulsions with desirable physical properties. Furthermore, the study provides data required for the development of a nanoemulsion of ethanol extract of Brucea javanica.
