Abstract

Speaking skill is an essential component of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction in vocational education, particularly for Fashion Design students, as it supports effective communication in professional and workplace contexts. This study aims to explore students’ preferences regarding speaking activities and input types in ESP classes. The research employed a descriptive quantitative research design. Data were collected through a close-ended questionnaire administered to 67 students of the Fashion Design major at SMKN 2 Bukittinggi. The collected data were analyzed descriptively using percentage analysis. The findings reveal that role play was the most preferred speaking activity (47%), followed by question-and-answer activities (26%), indicating students’ strong preference for interactive and communicative tasks. In terms of input types, authentic audiovisual materials (39%) were most favored, followed by picture-supported monologues (30%) and vocabulary-supported monologues (27%). Additionally, most students preferred medium-length texts (56%), materials sequenced from easy to difficult (57%), and learning materials accompanied by illustrations or tables (80%).These results suggest that ESP speaking materials for vocational learners should be interactive, multimodal, and contextually relevant. This study provides practical implications for ESP teachers and material developers in designing speaking materials that better address the needs of Fashion Design students in vocational education.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and QuillBot are increasingly used in academic writing and offer both benefits and challenges for EFL learners. While these tools can support language development, concerns remain regarding students’ independence and academic integrity. This study examines the use of AI across different stages of writing and explores its perceived benefits and limitations among sixth semester English students at UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. A mixed methods convergent design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through a validated questionnaire from 88 students, while qualitative data were obtained from in depth interviews with 10 selected participants and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that AI was widely used during pre writing and brainstorming (85 percent), drafting (92 percent), and revision (78 percent). Students reported improvements in grammar, organization, and vocabulary, with grammar receiving the highest mean score of 4.2 out of 5. However, 35 percent of participants admitted to copying AI generated content without proper paraphrasing, highlighting potential ethical concerns. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating digital literacy and ethical guidance in the use of AI for academic writing.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of the Think Pair Share (TPS) technique on students' speaking ability at MAN 3 Agam, where many tenth grade students had difficulty in speaking English. Vocabulary limitations hindered communication during class activities, causing students to prefer using local language which is “Minang language.” Inaccurate pronunciation also caused misunderstandings, making it difficult for them to express ideas spontaneously. This study used quantitative methods with a quasi-experimental research design of nonequivalent control group design. The population of this study were all tenth grade students at MAN 3 Agam, with samples selected by cluster random sampling. Class XE.2 was selected as the experimental group and XE.3 as the control group. The instrument used was an extensive speaking test (monologue), which was validated by content validation and tested for reliability using Inter-rater reliability with Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) method. Data analysis included normality and homogeneity tests, followed by hypothesis testing using paired sample t-Test and independent sample t-Test. The results of the paired sample t-test in the experimental class showed Sig (2-tailed) <0.05, indicating a significant effect of TPS. The independent sample t-test comparing the two classes also showed Sig (2-tailed) < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between students taught with TPS and those not taught with TPS. The post-test scores showed that the experimental class achieved a higher mean score than the control class, indicating that the speaking ability of the class taught using TPS technique was better than the class not taught using TPS technique.

Abstract

Pension fund management in Southeast Asia faces challenges due to aging populations, economic volatility, and varying regulatory frameworks. This study investigates pension fund management practices in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines to identify factors influencing their sustainability. The objective is to compare regulatory frameworks, investment strategies, and demographic challenges to provide insights for policy reforms. Using a qualitative comparative analysis, the study examines data from government reports, academic articles, and industry publications. The findings reveal that Singapore’s strong regulatory system and diversified investments ensure high sustainability, while Indonesia struggles with limited regulations, low coverage (only 16.5% of workers), and conservative investment approaches. Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines face similar issues, with moderate sustainability due to weak oversight and reliance on low-yield assets. Demographic pressures, such as increasing dependency ratios, further strain these systems. The study concludes that tailored reforms, including expanding coverage to informal sectors and diversifying investments into assets like infrastructure, are essential to enhance pension system sustainability across Southeast Asia. These insights contribute to understanding regional pension management and offer practical recommendations for policymakers to secure long-term financial stability for retirees.
