Abstract

The escalation of the global climate crisis has necessitated a rigorous examination of how political leaders linguistically construct environmental realities to legitimize policy decisions. Despite extensive research on environmental communication, there remains a paucity of comparative critical discourse studies examining the linguistic dichotomy between Global North and Global South leaders within high-stakes economic forums. This study analyzes the rhetorical strategies employed by G20 leaders during the 2024 Summit to uncover how language serves as a tool for ideological dominance and evasion of responsibility. Utilizing Norman Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this qualitative study examines transcripts of keynote addresses from four G20 leaders. The analysis focuses on textual features, discursive practices, and broader social implications. The findings reveal a distinct divergence: Global North leaders predominantly utilize nominalization and passive voice to obfuscate agency regarding historical emissions, whereas Global South leaders employ high-modality affective language to frame climate change as an immediate existential threat requiring reparations. The study concludes that the discourse of "green growth" often functions as a hegemonic tool to maintain neoliberal economic status quos while feigning ecological urgency.

Abstract

This study investigates word stress errors in English two-syllable words produced by Poesis Seminary students and examines how these errors affect experiential meaning within Halliday’s experiential metafunction framework. Employing a descriptive qualitative design supported by simple quantitative analysis, the study involved 15 twelfth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a pronunciation task consisting of ten English two-syllable words and semi-structured interviews. Students’ pronunciations were audio-recorded, transcribed using the International Phonetic Alphabet, and analysed to identify error types, frequency, and meaning distortion. The findings reveal that 65.3% of the pronunciations contained word stress errors, with misplaced stress emerging as the most dominant type. Stress-contrast noun–verb pairs generated more errors than fixed-stress words. Linguistic factors such as Indonesian stress patterns, complex English stress rules, and limited phonological awareness, as well as pedagogical factors including lack of explicit instruction and limited exposure to spoken English, contributed to these errors. From an experiential metafunction perspective, incorrect stress placement frequently altered grammatical roles and distorted intended meaning. The study concludes that word stress should be taught as a meaning-related feature to enhance communicative clarity in EFL contexts.

Abstract

Women’s empowerment has become a central theme in contemporary literary and film studies, particularly in works that challenge traditional gender roles. Mulan, in both its animated (1998) and live-action (2020) versions, presents a female protagonist who resists patriarchal expectations and redefines women’s position in society. This study aims to analyze the representation of women’s empowerment in Mulan using a feminist literary approach. The analysis focuses on how Mulan negotiates gender norms, asserts agency, and embodies feminist values through her actions, decisions, and character development throughout the narrative. Using qualitative textual analysis, the study examines key scenes, dialogues, character portrayals, and symbolic elements that illustrate empowerment, resistance, and identity construction. The findings reveal that Mulan presents empowerment through three major aspects: (1) challenging patriarchal structures, (2) redefining femininity and heroism, and (3) asserting women’s autonomy and voice. The film portrays Mulan not only as a courageous warrior but also as a symbol of women’s capacity to transcend societal limitations and participate equally in traditionally male-dominated spaces. This research contributes to feminist literary criticism by highlighting how popular films can promote gender awareness and broaden representations of empowered women in modern narratives.

Abstract

of seventh grade students in writing descriptive texts at SMP Swasta Cinta Rakyat 3 Pematangsiantar. Writing descriptive texts is a challenging skill for junior high school students, especially in organizing ideas coherently and logically. Many students have difficulty in maintaining a clear flow of ideas, connecting one sentence to another, and developing descriptions in an organized manner so that the resulting writing often appears fragmented and less integrated. This condition indicates the need for effective teaching techniques to help students organize their thoughts before writing. The method used in this study is a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design involving two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The study population was all seventh grade students of SMP Swasta Cinta Rakyat 3 Pematangsiantar, with a sample of 60 students selected using a purposive sampling technique, 30 students each in the experimental group and the control group. Data were collected through writing tests in the form of pre-tests and post-tests, then analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. The results showed that the coherence scores of students in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group. The t-test results show that the calculated t-value is greater than the t-table at a significance level of 5% (t = 4.86; p < 0.05). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Mind Mapping Technique has a positive and significant effect on students' coherence in writing descriptive texts. Practically, the results of this study can serve as a reference for English teachers in implementing effective instructional strategies to improve students’ writing skills and encourage them to organize their ideas more systematically, as well as provide useful references for future researchers in conducting more in-depth studies related to writing instruction.

Abstract

The rapid growth of TikTok as a popular social media platform has significantly influenced written language practices, particularly in caption writing, which tends to be informal and spontaneous. This study aims to identify, classify, and analyze language errors found in TikTok captions created by Indonesian content creators. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, the data were collected through documentation of publicly accessible TikTok captions and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The findings reveal that language errors predominantly occur in the forms of redundancy, grammatical errors, spelling errors, and semantic inconsistency. These errors are not categorized as intentional code-switching or stylistic language mixing but rather as violations of standard linguistic norms. Theoretically, this study confirms that the informal nature of social media influences written language use and encourages non-standard forms in digital communication contexts.
