Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the meaning of hudā in Qur’an 2:185 as the epistemological foundation through which the Qur’an guides human beings in understanding, evaluating, and verifying truth. Previous research has generally discussed hudā within theological or broad thematic frameworks, resulting in limited exegetical attention to key verses that articulate the epistemic structure of Qur’anic guidance. To address this gap, this study applies a thematic exegesis (tafsīr mawḍū‘ī) approach consisting of three main stages. First, a lexical analysis of the root h-d-y is conducted to map its Qur’anic semantic field, including its core meaning, morphological derivations, and contextual usage across the Qur’an. Second, Qur’an 2:185 is examined through comparative exegesis (tafsīr muqāran), incorporating the interpretations of al-Ṭabarī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, Ibn Kathīr, and M. Quraish Shihab to identify both convergences and divergences in their understanding of hudā. Third, an epistemological synthesis is developed to relate the structural concept of Qur’anic guidance to contemporary challenges, particularly the rise of post-truth discourse, information overload, digital misinformation, and algorithmic bias that increasingly shape modern epistemic environments. The findings indicate that hudā in Qur’an 2:185 encompasses three interconnected epistemic dimensions: (1) dalālah, the directional guidance that orients human cognition toward truth; (2) bayān, the explanatory dimension that clarifies legal, ethical, and theological principles; and (3) tamyīz, the faculty of discerning truth from falsehood through a synergy of revelation, reason, and empirical reality. This study concludes that hudā is not merely spiritual guidance but a coherent Qur’anic epistemology relevant for strengthening scientific ethics, knowledge verification, and intellectual integrity in the digital age.

Abstract

In the Qur’an, there are verses containing the mission of peace (āyāt as-silm) and verses of war (āyāt al-qitāl) or verse of the sword (as-saif verse). Some commentators, some have the view that, the verses of peace have been annulled (nasakh) by the verses of war. If indeed the peace verse is annulled by the war verse, it is considered contrary to the main mission of Islam as the religion of rahmatan li al-‘alamīn or Islam as a religion of peace. The annulment seems to justify the issue of violence in the name of the verses of the Qur’an, so that the Qur’an is accused of being the root for the emergence of violence in people’s lives. Through the mauḍū‘ī approach, it is concluded that the verses of war do not annul the verses of peace and also not vice versa. Each has its own context. Verses of war were revealed in response to the escalating conflict between muslims and the musyrik, ahli kitab, kafir, and hypocrites. War in Islam is permissible when the muslims are oppressed and because they were fought fīrst by musyrik or kafir. If not in war, social relations between muslims and non-muslims are based on the verses of peace, namely, being tolerant, patient, forgiving, yielding, not holding grudges, avoiding disputes, dialogue, guaranteeing freedom and protection, granting amnesty and reconciliation, and live peacefully side by side.

Abstract

This study explores gender justice within the framework of Pancasila and the Qur’an through the thoughts of Musdah Mulia and Husein Muhammad. The analysis reveals harmony between the values of humanity, brotherhood, and justice, affirming the equal status, rights, and responsibilities of women and men in social, political, and religious life. Pancasila, with its five principles, and the Qur’an, through its emphasis on monotheism and humanity, both reject gender discrimination and encourage a just society. This position contrasts with classical commentators such as Ibn Kasir, whose literal-patriarchal interpretations often subordinated women. Musdah Mulia’s feminist-humanist reading affirms gender equality as a divine imperative, while Husein Muhammad’s contextual interpretation critiques patriarchal culture and promotes women’s rights through progressive-traditional arguments. The study identifies persistent patriarchy, biased religious interpretations, and unresponsive policies as key challenges, but highlights the potential of contextual reinterpretation of Pancasila and the Qur’an to develop inclusive, gender-just policies. Employing library research, this study applies qualitative descriptive analysis, thematic interpretation, and critical hermeneutics.

Abstract

The Development of Green Hydrogen Energy Transition Utilization from the Perspective of the Quran Abstract This study examines the development of green hydrogen utilization as part of the transition toward new and renewable energy sources from the perspective of the Qur’an. The study aims to analyze the relevance of green hydrogen in supporting sustainable development and reducing greenhouse gas emissions based on Qur’anic values. A qualitative approach is employed using the tafsir maudhu‘i method through an analysis of Qur’anic verses related to environmental stewardship, balance, human responsibility as khalifah, and justice in the use of natural resources. The analysis is supported by the views of classical and contemporary exegetes from the Middle East and Indonesia and is contextualized within contemporary energy transition discourse. The findings indicate that the utilization of green hydrogen produced through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy is consistent with Qur’anic principles of sustainability and the prevention of environmental degradation. There is convergence between the perspectives of classical exegetes, such as Ibn Kathir, and contemporary scholars, including Wahbah az-Zuhaili, Hamka, and scientific tafsir approaches, with modern research emphasizing the importance of a just energy transition. This study also identifies key challenges in green hydrogen development, including technological, economic, and policy-related aspects, while critically addressing continued reliance on fossil fuels that may generate long-term environmental and social impacts. This study concludes that green hydrogen is not only relevant as a technological solution for energy transition but also possesses strong ethical and theological legitimacy from a Qur’anic perspective. Integrating Qur’anic values into policies and practices for green hydrogen utilization can strengthen pathways toward sustainable and equitable energy development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the integration of the Systems Approach and the Contingency Approach in educational management from an Islamic perspective, in order to develop an effective management framework that is in line with Sharia objectives. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach through a literature review of management literature, Islamic education, and relevant conceptual sources. The data is analysed thematically by examining the main concepts of both management approaches and relating them to Islamic values, such as tauhid, syura, amanah, and maslahah. The results of the study show that the integration of the Systems and Contingency Approaches based on Islamic values produces a holistic management model that is adaptive to change without losing its spiritual orientation. This model not only emphasises organisational efficiency and effectiveness but also blessings, social justice, and moral responsibility, making it relevant for application in the management of Islamic educational institutions amid the dynamics of the modern environment

Abstract

Modern planning in Islamic education management often struggles to balance ikhtiar (rational effort) and divine tawakkal (reliance on Allah), leading to failures in risk mitigation in the Society 5.0 era. This article aims to address this issue by revealing holistic strategic principles from Qur'anic maudhui tafsir. The qualitative library research method applies thematic analysis on QS. Al-Anfal:30 (qadar), QS. Al-Hasyr:18 (ikhtiar), and QS. Ali Imran:159 (tawakkal), using classical tafsir by Ibnu Katsir (1999) and contemporary by Quraish Shihab (2007) and Hamka (2003), triangulated with Islamic management literature. Results reveal a three-pillar model: qadar as a long-term vision baseline, incremental ikhtiar for budgeting, and post-shura tawakkal mitigation, enhancing budget management efficiency by 25-35% compared to secular approaches, as shown in a contemporary Islamic management simulation. Impacts include holistic RPS recommendations integrating spiritual, rational, and participatory dimensions for Islamic universities, with prospects for empirical testing. The conclusion affirms Maudhui Tafsir as an original solution for planning that balances qadar, ikhtiar, and tawakkul.

Abstract

This article discusses the cosmos as a divine text by reconstructing the epistemology of Qur'anic interpretation in light of modern astrophysics. This approach emphasizes the integration of revelation, empirical observation, and philosophical reflection in understanding the phenomena of the universe. By examining Qur'anic cosmological verses hermeneutically and linking them to contemporary astrophysical discoveries, such as stellar evolution, black holes, cosmic background radiation, and the large-scale structure of the universe. The method used is qualitative with a philosophical hermeneutic approach model, where the primary sources are cosmological verses such as (Q.S. Ali 'Imran: 190), (Q.S. Yasin: 40), (Q.S. al-Dzariyat: 47), (Q.S. al-Anbiya’: 30), (Q.S. al-Qamar: 49), (Q.S. al-Hadid: 4), to (Q.S. al-Furqan: 59). The secondary sources are journals, books, or other relevant research. After the data is collected, a comparative thematic content analysis is conducted using a triangulation model to ensure data validity, and conclusions are drawn.  The study's results indicate that revelation and science complement each other in building a holistic, transdisciplinary, and relevant understanding of modern science. The proposed Integrative Cosmological Interpretation Model combines the bayani (textual), burhani (rational-empirical), and irfani (spiritual-intuitive) approaches, so that Qur'anic interpretation is not only descriptive, but also prescriptive, philosophical, and ethical. The epistemic and philosophical implications of this research open new perspectives in Qur'anic studies, strengthen the dialogue between science and revelation, and emphasize the cosmos as a medium for human intellectual and spiritual reflection.

Abstract

This research begins with the realization that the Qur'an, as divine revelation, possesses both finality and openness. Its finality guarantees the authority and authenticity of God's message, while its openness allows the text to continue speaking to humanity across time and space. Using a hermeneutic approach, this research seeks to uncover the dialectic between the two in order to discover the meaning of revelation that is relevant to the various challenges of our time. Hermeneutics is positioned not only as an interpretive method but also as an epistemological framework that places the reader in a critical dialogue with the text, its historical context, and contemporary reality. The results show that applying the hermeneutics of revealed truth can prevent two extremes: the rigid consolidation of meaning within a single historical horizon, and the detachment of the text from its divine roots through overly liberal interpretations. By emphasizing the universality of Qur'anic values such as justice, mercy, and moral responsibility, hermeneutics presents an Islam that remains relevant. This relevance is evident in its ability to contribute to modern issues such as social justice, gender equality, the environmental crisis, and intercivilizational dialogue. Thus, this research confirms that the hermeneutics of revealed truth is a constructive effort to maintain the sacredness of the text while simultaneously revitalizing its transformative power. The Quran exists not only as a spiritual heritage but also as a source of inspiration for the development of a just, inclusive, and global humanity-oriented civilization.

Abstract

Purpose oriented readings of the Qur’an often articulated through maqāṣid (objectives) have become increasingly visible in reform-oriented discourse, yet the scholarly status of maqāṣid Al-Qur’an remains contested and still in the making. Against this backdrop, Al-Hidāyāt Al-Qur’aniyyah, a large institutional initiative affiliated with Umm Al-QuraUniversity, proposes a guidance centered (hudā) program that systematizes verse level “guidance” (hidāyāt) as actionable outputs. This article offers a contrastive comparison between hudā  and maqāṣid centered programs using a qualitative, text centered approach. The primary corpus is Al-Hidāyāt Al-Qur’aniyyah: Dirāsah Ta’shīliyyah (Vols. I–II), read as the project’s programmatic self-articulation; the comparator corpus is maqāṣid Qur’ān programmatic literature, with particular reference to Al-Maqāṣid Al-Kubrā li-l-Qur’ān, which distinguishes major objectives from detailed Guidance (tafṣīlī/ʿamalī). The findings reconstruct four epistemological patterns in Al-Hidāyāt, hudā as telos, non-operationalization of a maqāṣid hierarchy, Salaf authorized epistemic layering, and an applicative output genre and show, via the comparator’s own taxonomy, how maqāṣid and hidāyāt differ in object of inquiry, scale, inferential routes, and extensibility. A worked textual example (Q 2:275–279) demonstrates how each program scales normative output from the same passage. The article contributes a comparator grounded framework for studying teleological competition in contemporary Qur’anic hermeneutics and highlights the growing role of institutional infrastructures in shaping exegetical authority.
