Abstract

Abstract

This article proposes a novel integrative framework for community development that synthesizes Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) with the ethical and philosophical underpinnings of Socially Engaged Buddhism (SEB). The study responds to two core theoretical critiques of ABCD: its inadequate treatment of intrinsic human motivation and its neglect of structural power dynamics. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology, the research maps the conceptual foundations and criticisms of ABCD, explores key teachings of SEB and canonical Pāli texts, and identifies a research gap in integrating these paradigms. The resulting Social-Spiritual-Critical Empowerment Model incorporates Buddhist values such as compassion (karuṇā), interdependence (paṭiccasamuppāda), and distributive justice into the ABCD methodology. The model offers a multidimensional approach to empowerment, social, spiritual, and critical, that enables communities to mobilize internal assets, cultivate resilience, and engage in structural critique. This framework provides a theoretically grounded, ethically sustainable, and contextually adaptable model for holistic community development.

Abstract

This review synthesizes research on social interaction in Buddhist religious practices, focusing on community gatherings, rituals, and meditation groups to address gaps in understanding their roles in social cohesion, cultural identity, and community dynamics. The review aims to evaluate the social functions of rituals and communal gatherings, compare meditation groups as social sites, identify mechanisms that foster cohesion and intercultural harmony, analyze the role of leadership, and contrast traditional and contemporary practices. A systematic analysis of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies across diverse Buddhist traditions and geographical contexts was conducted, with particular emphasis on ethnographic and survey data from Asia, North America, and diaspora communities. The findings reveal that Buddhist rituals and meditation groups significantly enhance social integration, identity formation, and intercultural tolerance, while also adapting innovatively to urbanization and digital mediation. Spiritual leaders emerge as key mediators of social networks and cultural values, although issues of power dynamics and inclusivity warrant further scrutiny. Contemporary transformations are reshaping social practices but remain insufficiently examined through comprehensive critical evaluation. Collectively, these findings demonstrate the multifaceted social functions of Buddhist practices as dynamic sites of community resilience and cultural negotiation. This review underscores the need for integrative comparative research to deepen theoretical frameworks and to inform policy and community engagement in Buddhist studies and the broader study of religion

Learning motivation is very important for university students because it can enhance enthusiasm, learning outcomes, and the achievement of academic goals. High motivation encourages students to study harder, overcome challenges, and achieve success in education. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of both Buddhist character education and self-confidence on the learning motivation of STAB Maitreyawira Pekanbaru students. Data collection instruments were in the form of closed questionnaires distributed via Google Forms. The results of the questionnaires were tested through instrument testing, classical assumption testing, and simple and multiple regression correlation analysis.
