Abstract

Purpose:Identity nowadays has become very complicated in the political sphere. Political identity needs to be studied from two perspectives; Western theory and Islamic theory. Islamic political identity taken from the concept of the Qur'an. This research aims to reveal identity politics from these two perspectives, namely the perspective of the al-Qur'an and Western theory.  Method:The library research method is used for this critical analysis research, which takes a qualitative approach. The qualitative method collected data and news references from books, journals, or trusted online sources.  Results/Findings:The results show that there are contradictions in interpreting identity politics. Identity politics is often interpreted as something that is considered harmful. Through critical analysis, researchers found differences from the most fundamental aspects of understanding and theory to the value of their influence on society.  Conclusion:Even though the theory of identity in the West existed and was developed by Henry Tajfel and John Turner, the theory is in line with how Islam views political identity as necessary as a political strategy that emphasizes differentiation and the utilization of primordial ties as its main category. Identity in the Qur'an is called Shibgah. The theory of identity, both in politics and outside politics, is correct and reasonable.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine whether the structure of Surah Al-Qalam exhibits symmetry in accordance with patterns of parallel, concentric, or mirror-symmetrical arrangements at various levels of the text. The research methodology employs analysis, which is used to process data and address the research questions. This research approach adopts the concept of "Coherence" to find coherence in the structure of surah al-Qalam using the Semitic Rhetorical Analysis methodology. This type of library research involves collecting data from various sources such as books, scientific documents, journals, etc. The results of this research show that the application of Semitic Rhetorical Analysis in Surah Al-Qalam produces a series consisting of 3 parts and 8 sections of text structure, which form a mirror concentric construction (AB/x/B’A’). The results of the analysis also show that there is a connection between parts, which shows good coherence and verse structure. This finding refutes Richard Bell's view because each verse in Surah Al-Qalam can be symmetrical with other verses from the lowest to the highest text level.

Abstract

The usage of biblical criticism as methods to approach the Qur’an have raised doubts about its authenticity. It begins with the assumption that several faults in Bible also found in the Koran. The qur’anic text is also worthy of criticism since it assumed as only written document, which is not also have being memorized for centuries in mind. This paper tries to analyze some of biblical criticisms and their employment in the qur’anic studies in order to find out more than the assumptions and the results of studies, with focusing on textual criticism that applied by Arthur Jeffery in his various works. In order to achieve its goals, this library research employ descriptive-analysis methods to outline critically the usage of those biblical criticisms. The result of this study indicates that various qur’anic studies using Biblical criticism have a number of methodological weaknesses, such as the use of invalid reference sources, distortion of facts by changing the reference text, and faults of understanding the sources.

Abstract

The order of the verses and their coherence has been debated among orientalists in qur’anic structure studies. This article aims to reveal the coherence of the surah Adz-Dzariyat questioned by Richard Bell regarding the correlation between the verses in the surah. The method of analyzing this surah is Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA), utilizing the verses’ symmetry explanations from Muslim scholars’ interpretations. This library research adopts descriptive and content analysis methods for analyzing data. As a result of the study, Surah adz-Dzariyat consists of two passages and seven parts in mirror construction based on Semitic Rhetoric principles. The relationship between the verses shows their coherence and excellent verse order without jumpy arrangements. Several groups of verses that at first appeared to be irregular became orderly and had a specific connection that could be understood through Semitic Rhetoric principles. This analysis strengthens the miracles of the Qur’an and refutes various opinions that doubt how good the order of the verses of the Qur’an is.

Abstract

This article will discuss the implementation of Semitic Rhetorical Analysis to one of the surah in the Qur'an, namely Surah Al-Ahqaf. In the past scholars have also applied SRA to surah in the Qur'an to show unity and wholeness to the suras, this is done to prove Cuypers' words which say that although SRA is a rhetorical theory used to study the Bible, SRA is also able to prove the integrity of suras in the Qur'an. He stated that after he succeeded in applying the surah Al-Ma'idah and the last 30 suras in the Qur'an, he also claimed that his success in studying these surahs adequately represented that the entire surah in the Qur'an is composed by the principles of the SRA and forms a complete unity of surahs. Nevertheless, this claim must be proven by applying SRA to all surahs in the Qur'an, one of which is to surah Al-Ahqaf whose integrity is disputed by an orientalist named Richard Bell. He argues that the mention of jinn in verse 29 lacks the unity of discussion in surah Al-Ahqaf, it also makes the last few verses seem isolated from the discussion listed at the beginning of the surah. Therefore, the author tries to refute this statement by applying the SRA theory. In this case, a library research study is carried out by referring to books, paper articles related to the discussion. Then analyzed with analytical descriptive methods so that conclusions can be found. This study proves that the integrity of surah Al-Ahqaf can be seen from its arrangement in accordance with the principles of SRA, the arrangement also gives birth to interpretations that are in accordance with the ulama' tafsir.

Abstract

In contemporary Qur'anic studies, a polemic has emerged regarding the use of the Bible as a reference to interpret the Qur'an, or what is categorized as intertextuality. This article aims to reveal the interpretive distortions that arise from the use of the Bible in interpreting the Qur'an by using the perspective of ‘ulūm al-Qur’ān. The methodology of this research is qualitative by using the literature method and using the content analysis approach to analyze the data. Through this methodology, it is found that some orientalists such as Michel Cuypers and Edip Yuksel often use the Bible in interpreting the Qur'an (intertextuality). In the perspective of ‘ulūm al-Qur’ān, this method of interpretation can be categorized as the use of isrā'īliyyāt in the interpretation of the Qur'an.  However, it turns out that what the orientalists did was not in line with the rules of using isrā'īliyyāt itself. Therefore, the intertextuality done by the orientalists can be classified as al-dakhīl fī al-tafsīr (intrusion in interpretation). Ultimately, this method of interpretation is unacceptable, because it implies distortion of Qur'anic interpretation.

Abstract

This article examines Michel Cuyper’s interpretation of the Qur’an which is the result of the application of Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA) in QS. Al-Mā’idah. Although SRA’s implementation has demonstrated the coherence of the Qur’anic text; however, no one has properly articulated the cohesiveness of the Qur’anic text as the basis of that coherence. Thus, to ascertain the text’s cohesiveness in terms of positions and forms from the SRA’s perspective, this study applied cohesion text theories to Cuypers’ implementation of SRA in QS. Al-Mā’idah. A thesis of the paper is that, according to SRA, the cohesiveness of a qur’anic text in QS Al-Mā’idah can be shown through the pairings of words or sentences inside particular groupings of text particles following the principles of Semitic Rhetoric. The Semitic Rhetoric’s principle of parallel, concentric, or mirror symmetry in those text particle groups determined which words or phrases are paired in a text particle group. As a result, from an SRA perspective, the Qur’anic text’s cohesiveness may be discovered at each level of the text particle group, demonstrating multi-layered cohesiveness. In Cuypers’ reading of QS Al-Mā’idah, synonyms and repetition are used to maintain lexical cohesion, while ellipsis, substitution, and reference established grammatical cohesion.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find the structure of Surah Al-Muzammil so that it can be seen whether the verses in it are coherent. This research method uses analysis, namely, to process data and answer research problems. The approach used in this literature research is Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA) with descriptive analysis methods in data processing. The results of this research show that surah al-Muzammil is a text structure which is an application of SRA in surah al-Muzammil to produce a series consisting of 3 parts and 7 pieces which form a parallel concentric construction (A B/ x / A' B'). every piece and part have a relationship with other pieces and parts, so that every verse in surah al-Muzammil is interconnected. This finding was refuted by Richard Bell because each verse in surah al-Muzammil was able to be symmetrical with other verses from the lowest text level to the top text level, so this conclusion indicated that surah al-Muzammil was structured systematically and coherently.

Abstract

PurposeThis research aimed to reveal the integrity of Utsman bin Affan and the authenticity of the Qur'an by the three parameters of integrity: Honesty, Consistency, and Courage, and three parameters of authenticity: Continuity, credibility, and symbolism. It also involved the criticism study of Theodor Noldeke’s View about the codification of The Qur’an. MethodThis research employed a qualitative library approach to analyze Theodor Noldeke's views on the codification of the Qur'an. The analysis method consists of two steps: first, a descriptive analysis of Noldeke's intellectual background and the concepts of integrity and authenticity; second, a comparative analysis of the codification of the Qur'an from the perspectives of Muslim and Western scholars. Results/findingsThere were integrity factors in Utsman bin Affan, namely honesty and trustworthiness in behaviour, consistency in action, and courage and responsibility in making decisions. Utsman bin Affan was a caliph with integrity, so all the policies he issued towards the codification of the Qur'an guaranteed authenticity. ConclusionAlthough Theodor Noldeke argued that the Qur'an codification policy of Utsman bin Affan was inauthentic and has many problems with it, this statement was considered incorrect due to differences in research methods used, as well as differences in the history of the Qur'an and the Bible.
