Abstract

AbstractUsing Western methods to study the Qur'an raises several problems and concerns. This article discusses the Islamization of the Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA) method pioneered by Michel Cuypers in Qur’anic Studies. The main goal of this research is to Islamicize the SRA method to make it more harmonious with Islamic values in understanding the Quran. This qualitative case study adopts the Islamization of knowledge approach, as introduced by Syed M. Naquib Al-Attas and Ismail Raji Al-Faruqi. The findings of this study reveal that Cuypers' application of SRA in analysing Quranic texts raises concerns due to inconsistencies with the principles of interpretation within Islamic scholarship, including the neglect of sabab al-nuzūl, the absence of the hadith, the potential reduction of the meanings of Quranic verses, and occasionally arbitrary division of texts. In efforts to Islamize this method, this research recommends removing them and integrating the elements from the sciences of the Quran, such as sabab al-Nuzūl, s hadith, and the science of waqf (stopping in recitation), to fortify the analytical framework of SRA without altering its fundamental principles, including the examination of textual particle levels and various text structures like parallelism, concentric, and mirror structure. This article significantly contributes to developing Western methods to align them with Islamic principles. It addresses concerns and disagreements surrounding the application of Western methods in Quranic studies. Furthermore, it enriches Quranic studies with a more Islamic perspective, ultimately leading to enhanced and thorough comprehension of the Quran and enhancing academic insights. Keywords: Islamisation, Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA)Abstrak  Penggunaan metode Barat dalam studi Al-Qur’an menimbulkan beberapa permasalahan dan kekhawatiran.

Abstract

The era of digital disruption poses serious challenges for the world of education, particularly in shaping the character of students based on Islamic values. This study aims to analyze strategies for internalizing Islamic values in character education, with an emphasis on curriculum integration, the use of Islamic technology, role models (uswah hasanah), and the habit of religious activities. The research uses a qualitative approach with a literature study from various primary and secondary sources, including relevant empirical research results. The results of the study show that, first, the integration of Islamic values into all subjects has been proven to be able to foster students' spiritual awareness without being instructional in nature. Second, the use of Islamic technology and Sharia-based digital literacy can be effective means of increasing learning motivation while instilling ethical awareness, with teacher competence being a key factor for success. Third, the example set by teachers and parents (uswah hasanah) is an important strategy in fostering Islamic character, in line with social learning theory which emphasizes the role of behavioral models. Fourth, the habit of religious activities such as congregational prayers, tadarus, and other spiritual activities serve as a moral filter that protects students from the negative influences of digital information. Thus, the strategy of internalizing Islamic values in character education must be carried out comprehensively through

Abstract

The relationship between the Qur'an and mathematics remains theoretically contested between two dominant approaches: historical-empirical studies that attribute mathematical development in Islamic civilization to intercultural transmission, and contemporary analyses focusing on numerical patterns within the Qur'anic text. While the former emphasizes external influences, the latter often risks numerological overinterpretation without a clear epistemological foundation. This study addresses this gap by reconstructing Afzalur Rahman's interpretation of the Qur'an-mathematics relationship within a tawḥīdic epistemological framework. Using qualitative library research and content analysis, this study examines Rahman's works in dialogue with Seyyed Hossein Nasr and Bediüzzaman Said Nursi. The findings show that Rahman conceptualizes mathematics as an expression of divine unity, where the number one symbolizes the origin and return of multiplicity. Mathematics is thus understood not merely as a quantitative discipline, but as an ethical and contemplative science integrating rational precision with spiritual consciousness. Furthermore, this framework contributes to contemporary Islamic education by fostering moral formation, strengthening epistemological coherence, and encouraging scientific creativity. However, Rahman's paradigm operates primarily as a normative-philosophical model rather than an empirical explanation of scientific development. This study contributes to debates on religion and science by clarifying the epistemological role of tawḥīd in knowledge integration.

Abstract

The systematic arrangement of the Qur’an has raised pros and cons among Western academies regarding its coherence. This research examines the structure of Sūrah al-Fajr as a response to orientalist criticism, which argues that the structure of the verses is not connected. By using the theoretical framework of Munāsabah and Semitic Rhetoric, this research aims to confirm the relationship of the verses in Sūrah al-Fajr to show the accuracy of their arrangement, as well as to find the relationship between Munāsabah and Semitic Rhetoric in explaining the structure of the Sūrah. This library research uses a qualitative approach and descriptive-comparative methods in analyzing data. As a result, all the verses in Sūrah al-Fajr have been proven to be well structured and coherent based on Munāsabah and Semitic Rhetoric. Both can emphasize the structure of the Sūrah, although in different ways. Munāsabah emphasizes the linear connection of verses in a Sūrah, while Semitic Rhetoric explains the structure at each level of the text. In this way, Orientalist criticism regarding the composition of the Sūrah can be refuted.

Abstract

This research arises from a lack of in-depth research on the role of qirā'āt variations in enriching the scientific interpretation (tafsīr 'ilmī) of the Qur'an, particularly in cosmological verses. One example is the statement of Allah Wa āyatun lahumu al-laylu naslakhu minhu an-nahār (Yā-sīn: 37), which has three main qirā'āt: naslakhu (qirā'ah al-jumhūr), yuslakhu (qirā'ah Ibn 'Āmir), and taslakhu (qirā'ah Abī Ja'far). This study aims to reveal the semantic and bayānī meanings of these variations of reading and relate them to modern scientific phenomena regarding the day-night cycle. The research method used is qualitative, based on library research, with textual-comparative analysis of classical qirā'āt texts, traditional tafsīr works, and contemporary scientific interpretive literature. The findings show that the variety of readings provides complementary layers of meaning: naslakhu emphasizes the direct role of Allah as the regulator of cosmic phenomena; Yuslakhu highlights the firmness and orderliness of natural law; While Taslakhu offers dynamic visual illustrations that depict the night actively covering the day. The contribution of this research shows that the science of qirā'āt not only preserves textual authenticity but also expands the horizons of scientific interpretation by presenting an integrated theological, linguistic, and scientific perspective.

Abstract

In the modern era, an excessive tendency to pursue worldly pleasures has led to an imbalance between material and spiritual aspects. Surah Al-Kahfi contains values of Zuhud that offer a solution to addressing a materialistic lifestyle. This study aims to analyze the meaning of Zuhud and its application in Surah Al-Kahfi according to Mutawalli As-Sya'rawi. A qualitative method with a library research approach is employed, focusing on Sha'rawi's exegesis and other relevant works. A thematic approach is applied to identify the context of Zuhud within Surah Al-Kahfi. The results showed that, according to Sya'rawi, Zuhud emphasizes awareness of the world's limitations and an orientation toward the hereafter. His interpretation of verses 7, 28, 46, 104, and 110 asserts that Zuhud does not entail a complete rejection of the world but rather a balance between worldly and spiritual concerns. Moreover, the application of Zuhud in Surah Al-Kahfi encompasses social life (verse 10) through distancing oneself from environments that harm faith, wealth (verse 39) through gratitude in the story of Syibhul Jannatain, knowledge (verses 60 and 82) through the humility of Prophet Musa and Khidr, and power (verse 95) through the rejection of material rewards for the sake of communal well-being. Keywords: Zuhud, Surah Al-Kahfi, Mutawalli As-Sha'rawi.

Abstract

Abstract

Iltifāt is one of the most important rhetorical devices in the Arabic language and one of the most frequently used stylistic features in the Holy Qur'an. It has been described as the "courage of the Arabic language" because it enhances discourse and captures the attention of both readers and listeners. The rhetorical beauty and subtle meanings embedded in iltifāt have led scholars of rhetoric, Qur'anic exegesis, and other disciplines to devote considerable attention to its study and analysis. Among these rhetorical subtleties are the various forms of iltifāt found in the last part of the Holy Qur'an. This study presents a brief discussion of the linguistic and technical definitions of iltifāt, together with an overview of its different forms. It then examines the Qur'anic verses in the final section of the Qur'an that demonstrate this rhetorical device, while presenting the interpretations of Qur'anic commentators concerning these verses. Finally, the study points out additional instances of iltifāt found in this section of the Qur'an without attempting to provide a complete statistical enumeration of all its occurrences.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the interpretation of the rhetorical simile of Divine Light in the thirty-fifth verse of Sūrat al-Nūr as presented by Muhammad Abū Mūsā, a contemporary scholar of Arabic rhetoric, and the analysis produced by ChatGPT as an artificial intelligence-based system. The study focuses on comparing their approaches to interpreting the contextual relationship of the verse within Sūrat al-Nūr and their analysis of the elements of the compound simile (tashbīh murakkab) based on the principles of ʿilm al-bayān. Employing a descriptive-comparative library research method, this study uses Abū Mūsā’s work on the parables of Sūrat al-Nūr as the primary human analysis source, while the AI-based analysis was generated through ChatGPT 5.5 OpenAi and verified by comparison with relevant academic studies. The comparison was organized around two main aspects: the interpretation of the verse’s context and the structure and rhetorical function of the Divine Light simile. The findings reveal that both analyses agree that Divine Light symbolizes divine guidance and is closely connected to the thematic structure of Sūrat al-Nūr. However, they differ in their approaches to meaning construction. Abū Mūsā’s analysis begins from the broader context and objectives of the surah, particularly by relating the simile to the preceding legal discourse, whereas ChatGPT emphasizes the symbolic, spiritual, and educational dimensions of the rhetorical image. The study concludes that artificial intelligence can serve as a valuable supporting tool for enriching Qur’anic rhetorical studies, but it cannot replace the contextual depth and rhetorical appreciation provided by human scholars. This research contributes to the field of Digital Humanities by examining the potentials and limitations of Large Language Models (LLMs) in analyzing Qur’anic rhetoric.
