Abstract

This study examines the political behavior of the Chinese ethnic community in Lhokseumawe, Aceh, during the 2024 Legislative Election. The research explores how this minority group participates in politics and what factors shape its voting decisions within a post-conflict environment. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied, using in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis conducted between April and May 2025. Ten informants were selected through purposive and snowball sampling, representing community leaders, business actors, first-time voters, and a local academic. The findings show that participation among the Chinese community is active in the formal sense but limited in scope. Voting is treated as a civic responsibility, while involvement in party or campaign activities is minimal. Economic considerations are the strongest influence on political choice, as respondents associate stable governance with the continuity of their businesses. Family and community networks play a guiding role in decision-making, and national parties are preferred for their perceived neutrality and inclusiveness. These orientations produce a pattern of political behavior that values stability and social harmony over ideological alignment or power competition. Interpreted through the lens of rational choice and social identity theories, the findings suggest that political participation among this minority group reflects a pragmatic adaptation to local conditions. Engagement in electoral processes serves as both an affirmation of citizenship and a strategy to maintain coexistence within a socially sensitive environment. The study provides insight into how small ethnic minorities in post-conflict areas negotiate democratic participation through cautious and context-aware practices.

Abstract

Abstract

Peat ecosystems are one of the tropical ecosystems that have high ecological value because they play a role in carbon storage, hydrological regulation, and as a habitat for various fauna groups, including birds. Rawa Tripa, as part of the Leuser Ecosystem Area, is one of the most important peat landscapes in Aceh that faces anthropogenic pressures such as forest fragmentation and land use change. The lack of basic data on bird communities in this area hinders evidence-based conservation efforts. This study aims to inventory the bird species found in the Tripa Peat Forest and assess their conservation value in the context of habitat management. The survey was conducted from July 18 to 28, 2024, using the point count method on 10 observation transects. The results of the study recorded 16 bird species from 12 families, with the Pycnonotidae family being the most commonly found group. Several species with important conservation status were also identified, such as Leptoptilos javanicus (Near Threatened), Acridotheres javanicus (Vulnerable), and the presence of Rhyticeros undulatus (Vulnerable) and their nest, indicating the availability of large trees for nesting. Based on their feeding behavior, the birds of Rawa Tripa exhibit a diversity of ecological functions, ranging from insectivores and frugivores to raptors. These findings indicate that Rawa Tripa still has habitat quality that supports bird communities, even though threats such as hunting and land degradation remain. This study emphasizes the urgency of long-term monitoring and the need for conservation strategies that maintain vegetation structure and wetland sustainability in the Rawa Tripa area.

Abstract

The growing halal industry has emerged as a major driver of economic development in Muslim-majority countries; however, its expansion has largely been driven by market-oriented logic with limited engagement with Islamic social finance institutions. At the same time, waqf institutions - despite their historical role in financing public goods and socio-economic development - remain predominantly confined to traditional charitable functions. This conceptual paper addresses the structural disconnect between waqf and the halal industry by reconceptualizing their relationship within an integrated Islamic economic framework. Using a conceptual research approach based on critical literature synthesis and theory integration, this study examines existing waqf development models, halal industry ecosystems, and maqasid al-shariah principles. The paper proposes an integrated waqf institution and halal industry framework that positions waqf as a catalytic instrument for sustainable halal value-chain development through productive financing, institutional collaboration, and digital innovation. The analysis highlights how such integration can enhance governance quality, strengthen SME development, and align Islamic economic activities with broader sustainability objectives. The paper concludes that effective waqf-halal integration requires regulatory harmonization, professionalization of waqf management, and a shift from charity-based to impact-oriented waqf governance, offering strategic implications for policymakers and Islamic economic stakeholders.
