Abstract

The use of Abate larvicide to control dengue vectors has been carried out for years, causing the mosquito population to become resistant and environmental degradation. Therefore, it is necessary to use alternative larvicides from biological plants. Suren leaves (Toona sureni) and lime leaves (Citrus aurantiifolia) contain active substances flavonoids, saponins and alkaloids which are useful for killing Aedes aegypti larvae. The aim of this research was to determine the effectiveness of combination of suren leaf and lime leaf extract in killing Aedes aegypti larvae. This research method is a true experiment with a post-test only control group design. Larvae were divided into 6 groups, namely positive control, negative control, P1 (suren leaf+lime leaves extract 0.5%), P2 (suren leaf+lime leaves extract 1%), P3 (suren leaf+lime leaves extract 1.5%). Each glass contains 25 larvae. The Kolmogorov Smirnov normality test was carried out with abnormal result, the homogeneity test with non-homogeneous results, and the Mann-Whitney test. The results obtained were 99% larval death in the 6th hour by the P3 group. The conclusion of this research is that the combination of suren leaf and lime extracts 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% is effective in killing Aedes aegypti larvae in the 6th hour exposure.

Abstract

Diseases caused by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes can be controlled with vectors in the form of larvicide administration, but if it is excessive, it causes environmental pollution and causes larval resistance so that natural larvicides are needed. Ketapang leaves are tested to determine the effectiveness of larvicides against Aedes aegypti larvae. To determine the effectiveness of the ethanol extract of ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.) with TWEEN dilution on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae. The research is experimental with the research design used is posttest only controlled group design. This design compares the experimental group with the control group. The groups used were groups K (+) and K (-), and the TWEEN/PEG treatment group which contained ketapang leaf extract with a concentration of 1,5% and 2%, respectively. The sample of Aedes aegypti larvae used was instar III IV. Normality, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney and Probit tests are used for data processing. Mortality was highest with his PEG treatment at 1,5% and lowest with TWEEN at 2%. The effect of ethanol extract from ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.) with TWEEN diluent was the same as PEG on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae. The ethanol extract of ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.) with dilutions of TWEEN and PEG was less effective than abate.

Abstract

Background: Antibiotics are a treatment used to treat bacterial infections. However, the many antibiotic-resistant bacteria caused researchers to use plants as an alternative treatment, one of which is garlic (Allium sativum L.).Objective: Previous research stated that the diameter of the inhibition zone by garlic had a more excellent value than the antibiotics used. Hence, the researchers were interested in conducting an antibacterial test of the ethyl acetate fraction of garlic against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Methods: This study was an experimental laboratory using the posttest-only control group design method in the Kruskal Wallis test data analysis. Results: the results of the inhibition analysis with p-value < 0.05 in each test group for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. With the Mann-Whitney test, the results obtained a p-value <0.005 for each bacteria and test group. The most significant value, namely p= 0.002. This result shows significant differences between the test groups for each bacterium. Conclusion: There is an antibacterial effect of the ethyl acetate fraction of garlic (Allium sativum L.) at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 100% against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli

Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of polysebaceous follicles characterized by lesions that include blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. The prevalence of acne vulgaris is most significant among adolescents aged 15 to 18. In mild and moderate acne vulgaris, topical treatment enhances skin conditions. It is believed that the ability of salicylic acid to reach the stratum corneum, which exfoliates due to its comedolytic properties, aids in the healing of acne vulgaris. Objective: Evaluate the efficacy of salicylic acid as a treatment for mild and moderate acne vulgaris. Methods: This study's design involved a literature search using the terms acne vulgaris and salicylic acid in Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct. Results: The investigation found 108 articles were discovered and excluded based on the restriction criteria; 8 articles were reviewed. Salicylic acid substantially improved mild and moderate acne, according to all studies. Improvement was measured based on the lesion's severity, the lesion type, and Goodman's qualitative global scarring grading system. There is an improvement in inflammatory, non-inflammatory, and hyperpigmented lesions. Conclusion: Salicylic acid is clinically beneficial for mild to moderate acne vulgaris.

Abstract

Central Java ranks fourth among regions for the highest number of diabetes melitus (DM) cases, following Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and East Kalimantan. Grogol District in Sukoharjo Regency had the greatest prevalence of DM cases in 2019, accounting for 18.41% of the total. Diabetes melitus significantly impairs the overall well-being of individuals as it affects individuals across all age groups, including those who can work and those who cannot. If left unmanaged, it can lead to a range of outcomes. The Karanglo Village community is considered at high risk for diabetes melitus (DM) due to a history of health ailments and elevated blood glucose levels. Furthermore, this region is still lacking any health education interventions. This activity aimed to do earlier screening and monitoring of blood sugar levels, as well as providing health education, using the SEE approach (Screening, Health Education, and Exercise) to monitor diabetes melitus. The program was implemented in the period from November 2023 to January 2024, which includes a total of 27 participants, all of whom are female. The implementation of the programs involves the following methods: conducting blood sugar level screenings, engaging in diabetes exercises twice a week, providing health education in six meetings that cover topics such as the epidemiology and etiology, risk factors and prevention, symptoms and diagnosis, complications and management of DM, as well as blood glucose monitoring. Apart from using tools in the form of presentation slides, health education also utilized educational posters. At the end of the program, there was an increase in knowledge by 21.5% (p=0.024) based on pretest and posttest scores, improvements in blood sugar levels, total cholesterol levels, and body mass index. To follow up on the program, a group of independent blood sugar observers has been formed who is responsible for further monitoring blood sugar in program participants.
