Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of inquiry-based learning models (POGIL, guided inquiry, and free inquiry) on improving students' critical thinking skills in biology. Biology learning requires high-level thinking skills, one of which is critical thinking, which must be developed through effective learning strategies. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The study population consists of all eleventh-grade students at State High School 9, Makassar. The sample comprises 130 students, distributed across four classes: three experimental classes that implement inquiry-based learning models and one control class using the STAD learning model. The topic used in this study is the respiratory system. The instrument used was a critical thinking skills test administered before and after the treatment (pretest and posttest). Data analysis was conducted using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) to determine the effect of the treatment, followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test to identify significant differences between groups. The results of the study showed that there were significant differences in the improvement of critical thinking skills between the four models based on the ANCOVA test with a significance value of less than 0.05. The LSD test results showed that POGIL was superior to guided inquiry, free inquiry, and STAD. Meanwhile, guided inquiry and free inquiry did not show any differences, and STAD, as the control class, showed the lowest effect. In biology education, teachers should consider implementing the POGIL learning model as an alternative learning strategy to develop students' critical thinking skills. Teachers can also vary the use of inquiry models according to student characteristics and lesson content, and optimize the role of collaborative learning to enhance learning outcomes.   Keywords: POGIL, guided inquiry, free inquiry, critical thinking skills, STAD.

The participants for the Field Test were Class X students at SMAN 22 Bone, while those for the subsequent test were Class X students at SMAN 19 Bone. Interviews and documentation serve as the primary research methods employed in this study. A three-tier multiple-choice format is characterized by three levels of questioning within the multiple-choice framework. The resultant diagnostic test instrument comprises three tiers: the first tier includes questions, the second tier offers alternative explanations, and the third tier assesses respondents' confidence levels in selecting answers and providing justifications. The outcomes of this research include answer keys, test questions, and question grids as integral components of the instrument. This study demonstrates the validity of the developed instrument through validation conducted by expert validators. The reliability test yielded a robust average value of 0.91. Only 24 out of the 40 questions were deemed valid during the field test phase. Findings revealed that students exhibited an average misconception rate of 47.2%, spanning two indicators derived from the 40 questions. Notably, misconceptions were prominent in the discussion sub-topic concerning the earliest discovery of viruses and methods for distinguishing viruses and bacteria, with an average misconception rate of 56.8% in viral material. Developing a three-tier diagnostic test effectively identified students' misconceptions regarding viral material, indicating suitability and efficacy for educational application.

Abstract

Islamic education is an educational system based on the Qur'an and Sunnah. Kh. Ahmad Dahlan in his thoughts on Islamic education based on the Qur'an and Sunnah. This must be accompanied by other sciences or what is commonly referred to as other general sciences in order to create individuals who are rich in knowledge outside of religious knowledge. The education system at the Yamisa Islamic Boarding School, despite applying the teachings of the Qodariyah Naqsabandiyah order. But in practice in line with Kh. Ahmad Dahlan in which the Yamisa Islamic Boarding School teaches its students about religion and includes other knowledge so that the students have broad knowledge. The methodology used in making this article is to use historical research methods which consist of several stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The research method in this article uses the historical method. The first source collection was to find information and collect data from a book entitled Kh. Ahmad Dahlan (1868-1923), Rattan the Kiai: The Life Story of Mama Uyeh. Sources from the internet such as e-books, journals entitled understanding of education, Islamic Education Thought Perspective Kh. Ahmad Dahlan (1869-1923) and Kh. Hasyim Asy'ari 1871-1947(M): Comparative study in the concept of reforming Islamic education in Indonesia. and other articles such as the thesis entitled Islamic Education Thought According to Kh. Ahmad Dahlan. As well as interviews conducted with Mr. Heri Haris Mawardi as the administrator of the Yamisa boarding school. Islamic Education KH. Ahmad Dahlan at Yamisa Islamic Boarding School, although in practice there are differences in his flow because of NU and Muhammadiyah. However, in terms of the education system, it is not much different, because the thought of Islamic education at the Yamisa pesantren also applies the same thing as KH. Ahmad Dahlan in his education system. Namely, Yamisa Islamic Boarding School also implements a non-formal education system so that the education system can keep up with the times with openness to general knowledge so that students gain knowledge related to religion and the public.
