Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy and academic procrastination among junior high school students. The research method used is a correlational design with a sample of 8th-grade students selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using self-efficacy scales and academic procrastination scales with a Likert scale type. Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson correlation analysis to examine the relationship between the two variables. The results showed a significant negative relationship between self-efficacy and academic procrastination among junior high school students, with r = -0.536 and p < 0.001. This means that the higher the students' self-efficacy, the lower their academic procrastination. The findings suggest that self-efficacy is a crucial factor influencing academic procrastination among junior high school students. Therefore, teachers and counselors can utilize the results of this study to develop appropriate intervention strategies to enhance students' self-efficacy and reduce academic procrastination. Consequently, this study contributes to the development of more effective educational programs to improve academic achievement among junior high school students. ___________________________________________________________Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan efikasi diri dengan prokrastinasi akademik siswa SMP. Abstract

This study examines the problem of suboptimal learning discipline among students—manifested in behaviors such as tardiness, incomplete assignments, and inconsistent study routines—and investigates whether parental social support is associated with stronger learning discipline. The study aimed to (1) describe parental social support, (2) describe students’ learning discipline, and (3) test the relationship between the two variables among Grade XI students at MAN 1 Pasaman Barat. A quantitative correlational design was used with a sample of 65 students drawn from a population of 230. Data were collected using Likert-type questionnaires (31 items measuring parental social support and 35 items measuring learning discipline) and analyzed using Pearson’s product–moment correlation. The results indicated that parental social support was generally high (58.85% in the high category), while learning discipline was moderately high (63.08% in the moderately high category). Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between parental social support and learning discipline (r = 0.499; p < .001). In conclusion, stronger parental support is associated with better student learning discipline. The findings imply that schools should strengthen parent–school collaboration and guidance and counseling initiatives to foster disciplined study habits. Future studies should employ broader and more diverse samples, longitudinal designs, and multivariate models to test potential mechanisms (e.g., motivation and self-regulation) and improve causal interpretation.

Abstract

The transition to higher education is a critical period in which first-year students face new academic demands, financial pressures, social adjustment challenges, and uncertainty about the future. However, limited research has examined how freshmen make sense of and narrate their anxiety, particularly in the Indonesian context. This study aimed to explore the main domains of anxiety among first-semester students in Indonesian public universities and to interpret these experiences through a narrative counseling lens. The study employed a qualitative online survey design with an interpretivist orientation. Data were collected from 199 first-semester students through open-ended questions addressing anxiety-provoking situations, sources of anxiety, and the meanings students attached to their early university experiences. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and subsequently interpreted through a narrative counseling perspective. The findings identified four main themes: academic anxiety (41.8%), financial anxiety (23.1%), social anxiety (9.5%), and career anxiety (4.5%), while 21.1% of participants reported no anxiety. Academic anxiety was the most dominant theme and was primarily associated with adjustment to new learning demands and fear of poor performance. Overall, freshmen anxiety emerged not only as emotional distress but also as a narrative of inadequacy, burden, misfit, and uncertainty. This study highlights the need to understand freshmen anxiety as both a psychological and meaning-making process and underscores the relevance of narrative-informed support in higher education settings.
