Abstract

Background: Elderly individuals with disabilities often face challenges in maintaining physical fitness, highlighting the need for effective and appropriate exercise methods tailored to their limitations. Objectives: This study compares the effectiveness of low-impact specialized Pilates and Low-Intensity Steady-State (LISS) exercise in improving fitness levels among older adults with mild to moderate disabilities. The unique advantage of Pilates in enhancing balance and core strength is presented as a novel contribution. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test assessments was employed, involving 40 elderly participants with disabilities divided into two intervention groups over 8 weeks. Participants were selected through purposive sampling based on the inclusion criteria of 60–75 years with mild to moderate disabilities. Fitness levels were assessed using the Senior Fitness Test, which evaluates muscular strength, balance, flexibility, and aerobic capacity. Results: Data analysis was conducted using the Shapiro–Wilk test, paired sample t-test, and independent sample t-test. The results demonstrated that the low-impact specialized Pilates group showed significant improvements in core strength, balance, and flexibility, whereas the LISS group exhibited greater improvements in aerobic capacity. Conclusions: In conclusion, low-impact specialized Pilates is more effective in enhancing overall fitness among elderly individuals with disabilities. Therefore, it is recommended as a suitable exercise modality for rehabilitation and health maintenance programs to improve this population's quality of life and functional independence.

Abstract

Background: A healthy lifestyle is an important factor in achieving a high quality of life.. However, research exploring the impact of smoking habits on physical activity levels among students remains limited. This study aims to determine the correlation between smoking habits and physical activity among sports students. Subjects and Methods: This quantitative research study employed a simple random sampling technique to select 105 students from the Sports Coaching Education program. The students completed self-administered questionnaires to assess their daily smoking habits and weekly physical activity levels. In this study, smoking habits are the dependent variable, while physical activity is the independent variable. The data were analyzed using the Spearman Correlation Test to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the two variables. Results: The results indicated that 26% of the student population were active smokers, and 27% had insufficient levels of physical activity. Although no statistically significant correlation (p= 0.627) was found between smoking habits and physical activity among the students, a negative correlation trend (r= -0.048) was observed. This suggests that higher smoking levels may be associated with decreased physical activity levels. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that increased smoking may reduce physical activity participation. Therefore, promoting healthy lifestyles among students is crucial for enhancing their life quality.

Abstract

One of the efforts to prevent the overreaching condition is by doing a recovery phase after exercise. The quality and quantity of recovery influence the effectiveness of recovery. The effectiveness of recovery can be observed by heart rate and body temperature after recovery. This study aims to compare active recovery and passive recovery after moderate-intensity continuous training on heart rate and body temperature. The research method used is quasi-experimental and uses a two-group pre and post-test design. Based on the Pocock formula, the research subjects used were 40 women aged 24 years to 35 years. The data collected include heart rate and body temperature. The data analysis techniques used were normality test, treatment effect test (paired sample t-test), and difference test (independent samples t-test). The results showed that active recovery was better than passive recovery to optimizing post-exercise heart rate (p<0.05). Active recovery was better than passive recovery in optimizing body temperature (p<0.05). It was concluded that active recovery after moderate-intensity continuous training was better than passive recovery to optimize post-exercise recovery and prevent overreaching.
