Abstract

Initial reading is crucial in the learning process, as it is a basic skill every student must possess to progress to advanced reading. Students who lack initial reading skills will struggle to understand various learning materials in class. In reality, many students still lack initial reading skills appropriate to their age. Researchers even found that students in a class as a whole had difficulty with initial reading. The purpose of this study was to determine the difficulties experienced by students in learning initial reading, to identify the factors causing these difficulties, and to determine how teachers address these difficulties so that the learning objectives are optimally achieved. This study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method. Data collection techniques used observation sheets, interviews, and document analysis. Participants in this study were three ninth-grade students at the Manekat Niki-Niki State Special Needs School. The results showed that three students in the class had difficulty learning initial reading into syllables, and students had difficulty spelling syllables into words. This difficulty is caused by three factors: physical factors, interest factors, and family factors. Therefore, teachers make efforts to overcome these students' early reading difficulties by inviting students to spell letters while singing, reminding students of the benefits and importance of reading, and contacting parents/guardians to pay more attention to students' reading activities at home.

Abstract

This study aims to improve early reading skills through pop-up books for children with mild intellectual disabilities in grade V at SLB Bhakti Luhur Baumata Kupang. This research is a classroom action research. The subjects of the study were two grade V students with mild intellectual disabilities at SLB Bhakti Luhur Baumata Kupang. The research was conducted in two cycles. Data collection was carried out through early reading ability tests, observation of student participation, and documentation as supplementary data. Data analysis in this study used a comparative technique, which involves comparing pre-test scores with post-test scores and predetermined success criteria. The research results show that pop-up book media can improve initial reading skills in children with mild intellectual disabilities in grade V at SLB Bhakti Luhur Baumata Kupang. This is evidenced by the increase in scores for subject DM from 45 to 65, and for post-test II it reached 80. Subject EP's score increased from 50 to 70, and for post-test II it reached 85. The research findings indicate that pop-up book media can enhance the initial reading abilities of children with mild intellectual disabilities at SLB Bhakti Luhur Baumata Kupang. This can be proven by the average scores from student participation observation, which showed a very good category, reaching 90 in cycle I, while in cycle II the score reached 92. The scores consistently increased from the pre-test to post-test I and then to post-test II.

Abstract

Language is a medium of communication. In this world, there are many languages, one of which is Sign Language. Sign Language is a communication system that utilizes body and visual movements, not just hand signals. In addition to the use of sign language, learning methods are also developing to improve the understanding of deaf students, which is gesture-based, which includes body movements and expressions. This study aims to determine the Effectiveness of Using Sign Language in Understanding Indonesian Language Learning for Grade IV/B Deaf Students at SLB Bhakti Luhur Baumata Kupang. The method used is Classroom Action Research with a quantitative descriptive approach based on the Kemiis and McTaggart model which includes 4 stages: Planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The research subject was 1 person, namely 1 woman. Data were collected through observation sheets of students. The results of the study in the first cycle showed an increase in understanding Indonesian language learning using Sign Language. Thus, it can be concluded that Indonesian and Sign Language with contextual activities with environmental themes make it easier for students to understand the material, improve fine motor coordination, and foster an attitude of caring for the environment

Abstract

This study aims to improve the ability of mildly intellectually disabled children in Grade II at SLB Asuhan Kasih, Kupang City, to wear lace-up shoes through Task Analysis in the Personal Development subject. Children with special needs are entitled to education, including the development of self-help skills, self-care, and self-management. Observation results indicated that mildly intellectually disabled students faced difficulties in wearing lace-up shoes, particularly in understanding the steps and coordinating hand movements. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) involved 3 Grade II students (MRR, PPJ, PVS). The results of Cycle II showed a significant improvement, where all subjects reached the Very Good category (scores 85-95), after previously being in the Very Poor category (scores 30-40) during the pre-test. The conclusion of this study is that the use of lace-up shoe media can enhance students' ability and concentration in wearing lace-up shoes

Abstract

This study aims to improve the ability of students with mild intellectual disabilities to recognise the letters A–Z through the use of letter cards as a visual aid in early reading instruction. The study used a classroom action research (CAR) design, which was carried out in two cycles, each comprising the stages of planning, implementation of actions, observation, and reflection. The research subjects consisted of three students with mild intellectual disabilities in Grade VII at SLB Negeri Manekat Niki-Niki. Data were collected through observation, performance tests, and documentation of learning activities, then analysed descriptively, qualitatively, and quantitatively by comparing the results of the pre-action, cycle I, and cycle II. The results showed a clear improvement in letter recognition skills in all subjects after using the A–Z letter card media, as seen from the increase in scores at each stage of action. These findings show that letter card media effectively help students recognise letter shapes more accurately and consistently, and can be applied as an alternative learning strategy that supports the development of early reading skills for students with mild intellectual disabilities at special needs schools.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Braille counting boxes in improving the ability of visually impaired sixth-grade students at Kanatang State Special School to add numbers between 0 and 100. The background of this study stems from the low mathematics learning outcomes of visually impaired students due to the abstract nature of numerical concepts, which necessitates concrete and tactile learning media to aid understanding. The research used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method with a single subject design and involved a sixth-grade visually impaired student, Evan Clief Kaka (ECK), with a minimum passing grade (KKM) of 75%. The results showed a clear improvement after the intervention using the Braille Counting Box. The student's initial ability in the pre-action was only 35%, then increased to 50% in the post-test of Cycle I, and reached 80% in the post-test of Cycle II, which exceeded the MCC. Observations also noted an increase in the student's fine motor skills and independence, from the adequate category in Cycle I to the good category in Cycle II. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Braille Counting Box is effective in improving the ability to add numbers 0–100 and helps blind sixth-grade students at Kanatang State Special School achieve learning completeness.
