Abstract

This international mangrove conservation program implemented a Community-Based Participatory Action Research (CBPAR) approach at Cemara Beach, West Lombok, addressing 57% mangrove loss over the past decade. The collaboration between Universitas Mataram (Indonesia) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (Malaysia) engaged 35 participants (20 students, 13 lecturers, and 2 local farmers) in rehabilitating 0.5 hectares of degraded coastal area through strategic planting of 200 Rhizophora mucronata seedlings. The three-phase methodology included: (1) Pre-activity ecological surveys and stakeholder coordination, (2) Implementation combining theoretical training (mangrove ecology, planting techniques) and hands-on planting sessions with 1.5m spacing optimization, and (3) Post-activity evaluation through participant questionnaires and focus group discussions. Key innovations included experiential learning modules and the development of an Implementation Agreement for sustained institutional collaboration. Results demonstrated 82% seedling survival after 3 months, with 92% participant competency improvement in mangrove management. The program successfully integrated local knowledge (via "Relawan Mangrove" farmers' group) with academic expertise, creating a replicable model for coastal rehabilitation. Challenges identified included the need for extended training duration (recommended 50% longer) and enhanced safety protocols for future iterations. Strategic impacts aligned with SDGs 14 (Life Below Water) and 17 (Partnerships), establishing a transnational conservation network while enhancing community resilience. The initiative's success is documented through: (1) peer-reviewed publications in Jurnal Pengabdian Magister Pendidikan IPA, (2) institutional social media dissemination, and (3) formalized monitoring frameworks for long-term ecological assessment.

Abstract

Channa striata, commonly known as snakehead fish is a freshwater species with significant economic value. The high commercial value of this fish is attributable to the albumin content in the flesh of snakehead fish. The elevated cost of fish meal constitutes a significant challenge for fish farmers, given its role in fish feed formulations. Consequently, an alternative feed substitution that is both inexpensive and reduces the use of fish meal is required. The purpose of this study was to analyse the performance of feed formulations with the use of egg hatchery waste meal as a source of protein in snakehead fish. The research method utilised a completely randomised design (CRD), incorporating five distinct treatments and three replicates. The treatments in this study were P1 (0% hatchery waste meal/100 %  fish meal), P2 (25% hatchery waste meal + 75%  fish meal), P3 (50% hatchery waste meal + 50 fish meal), P4 (75% hatchery waste meal + 25% fish meal) and P5 (100% hatchery waste meal).  The utilisation of hatchery waste meal as a feed substitute in snakehead fish feed has been demonstrated to exert a significant effect including absolute growth rate, EPP, SGR and FCR. However, it has been observed that this substitution does not compromise the survival rate of snakehead fish. The incorporation of 25%  hatchery waste meal resulted in the optimal absolute weight growth rate and specific growth rate of snakehead fish, which were 4.32 g and 3.13%, respectively.

Abstract

Whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) cultivation activities are often exposed to disease-causing pathogens, one of which is a bacterial disease from the genus Vibrio sp. One of the triggers is the accumulation of organic matter, leftover feed and feces in the waters which causes whiteleg shrimp to be toxic to NH3. Kappa carrageenan is a polysaccharide compound derived from red seaweed that has the potential as a natural immunostimulant. The study aimed to determine the effect of administering kappa carrageenan at different frequencies on the defense system of shrimp infected with Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria. The study used RAL, with 5 treatments and 3 replications. The highest Survival Rate (SR) value was found in P5 at 80% and the lowest in P3 at 22%. The highest RPS value was found in P5 at 94.82% which was given carrageenan once a week and the lowest in P3 at 82.18% which was given carrageenan every day. The highest THC amount was observed in P5 at 14.9 x 106 cells/ml and the lowest was in P1 at 5.01 x 106 cells/ml. The highest AF value was in the positive control treatment P1 66.6% and the lowest P2 negative control 44.2%. The highest TBC value was P1 1.24 CFU/mL and the lowest P5 0.29 CFU/mL. The highest TVC observation was P5 1.42 CFU/mL and the lowest was P1 0.18 CFU/mL. In conclusion, the administration of k-carrageenan 20 g/kg once every 7 days provided a better immune response and protection against shrimp infected with Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria.

Abstract

The coastal area of Lembar District, West Lombok, has great potential in cultivating marine ornamental fish such as clownfish and blue tang, but water pollution due to Lembar Port activities has caused a decline in water quality and low fish survival. This community service aims to increase the capacity of farmers in managing water quality through the application of protein skimmer technology, a tool that can remove dissolved organic particles from seawater. The activity was carried out in six stages, namely location survey, socialization, training, technology application, mentoring and evaluation, and program sustainability. The results of the activity showed that partners experienced an increase in understanding of the importance of water quality and skills in using protein skimmers. In addition, the condition of the cultivation environment became more stable and supported the growth of ornamental fish. With a participatory approach and the application of appropriate technology, this activity was able to provide a positive impact. This program is expected to be a pilot model for other coastal areas in the development of sustainable marine ornamental fish cultivation.
