Abstract

This research aims to investigate students’ perspectives on using the interactive game “Kahoot!” as the media of vocabulary test at one of the public senior high schools in Yogyakarta Indonesia. It was qualitative research with five voluntarily participating students as the participants. An in-depth semi-structured interview was applied as the data collection technique. The theme-based analysis was used in this study. The finding shows that first, Kahoot! is more practical for a vocabulary test. Second, the game can attract the students’ attention to the test. Third, it helps the students to be more active in the classroom and the last, the game makes the students more enthusiastic in doing the test. However, this research also found some negative sides of using Kahoot!; first, the students become less confident with their score, especially when they get lower scores than other students because the scores were displayed on the leader board in Kahoot! application; second, some students had a lack of knowledge in using the application; and the last, the time was limited. This study implies that the use of Kahoot! in the EFL classroom can be an alternative for teachers to teach vocabulary and provide fun learning activities for the students.

Abstract

The ways students learn nowadays have changed significantly since the Covid 19 pandemic in 2019. Students today need different ways of teaching as they also have different learning styles. This study is intended to investigate how much the Indonesian primary and secondary English teachers are technologically literate, identify the challenges they face in teaching using technology and describe their hopes and expectation in their professional work as English teachers. Questionnaires in the form of google form were used to collect the data from all the participants, while interview was used to collect the data from the selected participants. The findings showed that most of the participants possessed high level of digital literacy, suggesting that they had the skills needed to help them teach online classes using the available online teaching platforms. They seemed to enjoy teaching online classes as they were capable of exploiting the online resources as the teaching materials, developing the available resources and even creating the digital teaching materials and using it in their online classes. The most serious problem they had was lack of IT knowledge in regard with the new online teaching platforms and internet connection. If they had to use the new online teaching platform, they had to learn it on their own, usually through YouTube and teach how to use it to their students. The classic problem, the internet connection, still occurred among the teachers and it caused problems in delivering the teaching materials and assessing the students’ work. This implies that the policy makers need to design professional development program which would help the Indonesia English teachers cope with their technological issues.

Abstract

Assessment is an aspect of learning process which the students should have. Portfolio is a famous assessment, and it is a type of alternative assessment. The use of portfolio in English learning is expected to increase the students’ achievement. The aims of this study are (1) to understandhow the teachers give introduction of portfolio assessment toward the students, (2) to understand the system of portfolio assessment, (3) to describe the disadvantages of portfolio, (4) to identify the impacts of portfolio for the students, and (5) to understand the reasons of using portfolio in the classroom. This study was qualitative research. The participants of this study were two English lecturers who used portfolio as the assessment tool in their classes. The instrument used in this research was interview. To analyze the data, the portfolio was transcribed and analyzed manually. The result of this study showed that portfolio is very useful and effective technique to assess the students, and it can help both the lecturers and the students in learning process to get good achievement.

Abstract

This study seeks to analyze and synthesize empirical studies on the use of mobile technology in English language teaching. The following criteria were used to select the research articles for this study: (1) peer-reviewed studies, (2) the field of the study must be the implication of MALL, (3) published within the last five years, and (4) studies must be in Asian context. A total of twenty-five published research articles were reviewed in terms of research design, learning context, participant, and settings. The electronic searches for these studies were conducted using search engine databases (e.g., ERIC and Google Scholars) as well as some reputable journal websites (e.g. link.springer.com). The results showed that most of the studies reviewed are mixed-methods and were mainly conducted in Indonesia. The finding also revealed four common topics including the use of MALL was motivating, increasing students’ performances, supporting language learning, and the challenges students face due to Mobile Assisted Language Learning. Overall, the findings indicated that Mobile Assisted Language Learning had a positive impact on the educational context, particularly in English language teaching. Abstract

The emergence of Metaverse, a three-dimensional virtual space that enables users to interact in computer-generated environments, has opened up new possibilities for language learning and instruction. This study explored the pedagogical potential and transformative effects of incorporating Metaverse environments in English language teaching, with a specific focus on intercultural communication. Drawing on theories such as social constructivism, intercultural communication, and autonomous language learning, this research investigated the impact of Metaverse on language acquisition, intercultural competence, and learner autonomy. The study employed a qualitative approach, including interviews with experts in Metaverse development and English language instructors. The findings revealed several pedagogical implications, including the promotion of immersive language learning experiences, enhanced interaction and collaboration, personalized learning opportunities, and increased motivation. Additionally, the study uncovered the positive impacts of Metaverse environments on intercultural communication and cultural understanding in English language learning. The research contributed to the understanding of how Metaverse could support language education and provides valuable insights for language teachers and students to optimize their language learning experience in virtual environments.

Abstract

Abstract: The objectives of this research are to find out the students’ needs of using material at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta toward English speaking material due to Covid-19 disease, to find out teachers’ needs towards English speaking material, and to find out the development of English speaking material based on essential basic competencies.This research employs Research and Development. The population was all XI students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta and the sample was chosen purposively only 35 students of class XI MIPA 8. The data were gathered through interviews with teachers to find out the existence of the use of English speaking materials. In addition, researchers have also distributed questionnaires to students of class XI MIPA 8 to find out the students' need for appropriate modules to improve speaking skills. The data was analyzed by based on the theme of the research questions.The results of this study indicate that the existing material is in line with the pandemic conditions, such as the module design being attractive, the content in the module in line with the latest syllabus (essential basic competencies), and the module being converted into the online form, thus students can study anywhere and anytime. The students' need for the material developed showed very varied results. As for the module development process, the researcher follows the stages under the Research and Development method.

Abstract

The integration of technology in education has transformed the teaching and learning of the English language. Online discussions had gained significant attention due to their potential to enhance students' linguistic proficiency, critical thinking skills, and overall engagement. However, there was a lack of research on students' perspectives on engaging in online discussions specifically within the context of English Language Education departments at private universities in Yogyakarta. This study aimed to address this gap by exploring students' experiences, perceptions, and challenges when participating in online discussions at a private university in Yogyakarta. The research investigated the benefits, drawbacks, and challenges encountered by students in online group discussions. A qualitative research methodology was employed, and data was collected through interviews with five English education students. The findings revealed that engaging in online discussions offered benefits such as increased interest, flexibility, improved preparation and performance, and enhanced writing skills. However, limitations included the loss of an authentic discussion experience, inadequate acquisition of detailed information, and frustration due to a lack of responses and comments. Challenges faced by students included low internet connection. The study contributed to the existing literature by shedding light on students' perspectives and informing pedagogical practices in the specific context of English Language Education in Yogyakarta's private universities.

Abstract

Neoliberal ideology’s influence on higher education has been a concern for researchers on a global scale. Indonesian researchers have also examined the practice of neoliberalism in higher education. However, they only focused on the managerial dimension and there is a dearth of literature on the influence of neoliberalism ideology on educational policy. This study intends to close a gap in earlier studies by investigating the ideological remnants of Neoliberalism in the notion of ‘Kampus Merdeka’ or Emancipated Learning as perceived by 12 lecturers at English Education Department in Yogyakarta. This study employed a qualitative approach through the use of semi-structured interviews. The study found that university and departmental missions were aligned with industry demands; the curriculum was driven by industry; the teaching and learning process was determined by the market; the Tridharma of Higher Education was extended to industry; little emphasis was placed on moral and religious values; curriculum “vocationalization” was emphasized; collaboration with industry was focused; academic commodification and consumerism increased; and academic commodification and consumerism accelerated. The findings added to a new existing theme, that is increased collaboration with industry. Moral and religious values must be incorporated into the curriculum, as they are absent in ‘Kampus Merdeka’ paradigm.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has caused a rapid and massive change in the education sector across the world and left no choice to teachers to maintain their status quo. As a country with very diverse geographical and technological conditions, Indonesia has felt the severe impact of this pandemic. This study explores how Indonesian English as foreign language (EFL) teachers struggle to adapt to the online teaching process, identifies the challenges they encountered during the online teaching and learning process, and investigates their strategies in coping with the associated challenges to ensure the learning objectives were achieved. This study employed photovoice as a visual research methodology to capture the new phenomena and answer the research objectives by inviting four English teachers from three different islands, Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi to share their experiences and strategies for survival. The results indicated that Indonesian EFL teachers suffered from challenging experiences, including the trial and error of learning management system (LMS) choice, and were confronted with unpleasant feedback from the students. This study also identified poor internet connection and low online student participation as the main issues. To deal with such problems, especially with low student participation, they viewed disadvantaged situations as a trigger to improve their creativity.

Abstract

Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has become an increasingly important component of teaching and learning in university environments, especially in the context of listening classes and interpreting audio in foreign languages. This study used mixed qualitative and quantitative research methods, including surveys and interviews, to collect data about the use of MALL in listening classes in university settings. The results of this study describe students' perceptions, and voices, and identify the challenges students face when participating in Mobile-Assisted English Learning for listening activities. In the context of a listening class, MALL allows students to practice listening with a diversity of audio sources, including recorded speeches, interviews, and other structured audio materials. This ability can improve their oral comprehension skills and expand their understanding of language variations used in real situations. This research concludes that MALL can be an effective tool for improving students' listening skills in a university environment.
