Abstract

This research aims to investigate students’ perspectives on using the interactive game “Kahoot!” as the media of vocabulary test at one of the public senior high schools in Yogyakarta Indonesia. It was qualitative research with five voluntarily participating students as the participants. An in-depth semi-structured interview was applied as the data collection technique. The theme-based analysis was used in this study. The finding shows that first, Kahoot! is more practical for a vocabulary test. Second, the game can attract the students’ attention to the test. Third, it helps the students to be more active in the classroom and the last, the game makes the students more enthusiastic in doing the test. However, this research also found some negative sides of using Kahoot!; first, the students become less confident with their score, especially when they get lower scores than other students because the scores were displayed on the leader board in Kahoot! application; second, some students had a lack of knowledge in using the application; and the last, the time was limited. This study implies that the use of Kahoot! in the EFL classroom can be an alternative for teachers to teach vocabulary and provide fun learning activities for the students.

Abstract

During the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a very significant change in student teaching and learning methods. The government policy requires that almost all activities including learning activities at school be eliminated and replaced with online schools. One of the most used applications for learning in this pandemic era is WhatsApp. The general objective of this research is to conduct a comparative study on the use of the WhatsApp application as a learning application during the Covid-19 pandemic in elementary and junior high school students in English. While the specific purpose of this research is to find out the strengths and weaknesses as well as the constraints of using WhatsApp as a learning application. The research method used is through field observations using qualitative descriptive methods and also interview techniques to several elementary and junior high school students in the research environment. This is interesting to research further based on direct observations of researchers on the use of WhatsApp on school students directly. This study assumes that the advantages and disadvantages of the learning process using WhatsApp will be found for both elementary school students and junior high school students. That elementary school finds difficulty in using WhatsApp for learning. Because some of the elementary students are still not fluent in reading. Junior high school learners assume that learning by WhatsApp is efficient but still not comparable to face-to-face meetings. The research implications are as follows:  that the students would be able to learn easily by using WhatsApp as a learning application. The teacher Would find another method that enhances the understanding of the students besides using WhatsApp by necessity.

This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The research subjects were two teachers who taught at a University in Yogyakarta. The research data collected through in-depth interviews, which were analyzed descriptively by using interactive techniques. The Interactive analysis is done by collecting data, reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results of the data analysis show that two teachers were not too familiar with e-learning, so they still have many obstacles in the teaching process by using e-learning. There are several obstacles, such as obstacles in teaching by using e-learning as devices, teachers' knowledge, time management, and students ’motivation. Abstract

This study investigates the current practices and challenges of alternative assessment for the teachers. While oral competence remains a productive skill in learning language process, the concept of alternative assessment or teacher-made assessment (classroom assessment) is another more authentic method of assessments which is different from the traditional ones. This study involved two EFL teachers who had more than five years teaching experience and used to give alternative assessment practice in the same Islamic Boarding School (IBS). An in-depth semi-structured interview and class observation was conducted with these two key aims: (1) to describe how English teachers are currently using alternative assessment practices on EFL students’ oral competence; and (2) to describe the difficulties faced by English teachers in implementing alternative assessment on EFL students’ oral competence. The results revealed that English Teacher in IBS has widely employed several methods such as peer assessment in collaborative work, and class students’ observation. In applying alternative assessment strategies, the teachers focused on oral skills which used many group activities and gave authentic materials as topic. The teachers increased the students’ involvement by giving activities such as role-play, assigning them to memorize short dialogue, drama, conversation, and presentation. The teachers also collected students’ notebooks as additional scores, raised students’ cases or problems to solve, and shared the components that would be assessed. The teachers gave some recommendations in order to use oral presentation to stimulate students’ oral competencies in their class and evaluate or control students to practice English outside of the classrooms as well. English teachers also faced several difficulties in implementing alternative assessment on EFL students’ oral competence, such as students’ lack of vocabulary, students’ weak of pronunciation and grammar which makes the students less confidence and motivation, and some slow-learners. In addition, teachers also had limited time to assess all student competencies.

The subjects of this study are 35 EFL students of English Departments in an Indonesian higher education institution. They were invited to complete a questionnaire of strategies in learning writing skills, and six of them were asked to have an interview about the problems during the learning process. The strategies are based on the stages of the writing process (planning, execution, and revision), which in this research were presented in three model factors (cognitive, metacognitive, and social strategies). The result showed that the average use for each strategy is as follows, 79% for metacognitive strategy, 74% for cognitive strategy, and 81% for social strategy. Regarding the second goal of this study, the problems that the students faced in learning writing include grammar and vocabulary issues.
