Abstract

Teaching speaking skills is a significant challenge for teachers, especially in a vocational school environment. This study aims to identify the strategies used by teachers in teaching speaking at SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan. The subjects of this study were three English teachers and 35 eleventh grade students from the Broadcasting class in the 2023/2024 academic year. Using descriptive qualitative method, this study collected data through interviews and classroom observations. The results showed that teachers used a variety of strategies, including storytelling, class discussions, and the use of social media, which effectively improved students' motivation, active participation, and speaking skills. Storytelling engages students emotionally, helping them build vocabulary and public speaking confidence. Class discussions encourage active participation, improving students' communication and critical thinking skills. Meanwhile, social media allows students to practice English in real-life contexts, making learning more interactive and fun. These strategies are proven to not only improve students' speaking ability, but also foster their personal and social development. This comprehensive approach aligns with the demands of the vocational curriculum, preparing students with the essential communication skills needed for professional and social growth.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety appears detrimental to English learners since it can lead to negative self-perceptions, mental slowness, and poor performance. As a result, students cannot achieve a high degree of English competence, particularly fluency. English Education students at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan Yogyakarta experienced a fear of speaking because they find it challenging to communicate with lecturers and peers in English. This study investigates students' English-speaking anxiety levels, the factors that cause students' English-speaking anxiety, and the strategies the students use to overcome English-speaking anxiety. This qualitative study utilized questionnaires and interviews to answer the research questions and collect data. The questionnaire of 33 statements related to anxiety in speaking English; semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data for this study. Six students were interviewed, and 85 students in the third semester were respondents to the questionnaire, a random sample. This study found that 34 students had moderate anxiety levels, while the anxiety factors that influenced students were communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation. The students' strategies to reduce anxiety are preparation, positive thinking, relaxation, and peer seeking. Those strategies could reduce the students' English-speaking anxiety. The results of this study can be used as input for students who experience anxiety in speaking English and for English teachers to understand their students' anxiety better.

Abstract

Advanced analytical approaches are required to accurately forecast the energy sector's rising complexity and volume of time series data.  This research aims to forecast the energy demand utilizing sophisticated Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) configurations with Attention mechanisms (Att), Grid search, and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In addition, the study also examines the influence of Min-Max and Z-Score normalization approaches in the preprocessing stage on the accuracy performances of the baselines and the proposed models. PSO and Grid Search techniques are used to select the best hyperparameters for LSTM models, while the attention mechanism selects the important input for the LSTM. The research compares the performance of baselines (LSTM, Grid-search-LSTM, and PSO-LSTM) and proposes models (Att-LSTM, Att-Grid-search-LSTM, and Att-PSO-LSTM) based on MAPE, RMSE, and R2 metrics into two scenarios normalization: Min-Max, and Z-Score. The results show that all models with Min-Max normalization have better MAPE, RMSE, and R2 than those with Z-Score. The best model performance is shown in Att-PSO-LSTM MAPE 3.1135, RMSE 0.0551, and R2 0.9233, followed by Att-Grid-search-LSTM, Att-LSTM, PSO-LSTM, Grid-search-LSTM, and LSTM. These findings emphasize the effectiveness of attention mechanisms in improving model predictions and the influence of normalization methods on model performance. This study's novel approach provides valuable insights into time series forecasting in energy demands.

Abstract

This study examines the correlation between the listening proficiency of third-semester English Education students at a private university in Indonesia and their habits of listening to English songs. Data collection involved a questionnaire designed to gauge students' frequency and genre preferences in listening to English music alongside Mid-Term Examination (UTS) scores used to indicate their listening proficiency. A Lilliefors normality test was conducted on the data related to students' listening skills and their song-listening habits, yielding significant values of 0.020 and 0.200, respectively. The null hypothesis (H0), which assumes that the data follows a normal distribution, was considered in this context. The Spearman’s rho correlation test, a non-parametric measure for determining the direction and strength of the association between two variables, revealed a correlation coefficient of -0.125 between students' listening proficiency and their English song-listening habits. The negative coefficient suggests a weak negative correlation between these variables. However, careful interpretation of this coefficient, including its associated two-tailed p-value, is necessary to determine the statistical significance of the observed relationship. The weak negative correlation observed indicates that listening to English songs as a habit may not substantially enhance listening proficiency in academic contexts. This finding suggests that while exposure to English music may offer informal language exposure, it may not directly translate into improved academic listening skills. Consequently, educators and curriculum developers should consider supplementing informal listening practices with structured listening exercises specifically tailored to students' linguistic and comprehension needs. This study underscores the need for a more comprehensive approach to developing listening skills within English language education.

Abstract

Modality is a salient notion in language, manifested through modal verbs. However, modal verbs are complex grammatical units since they have multiple functions and meanings. Previous studies have shown mismatches between actual language use and its presentation in textbooks, including modal verb representation in both EFL and ESL contexts. This study explored the distributional frequencies of modal verbs in Indonesian EFL textbooks compared to those in Malaysian ESL textbooks. It compiled the textbook conversation corpora from secondary education levels in Indonesia and Malaysia: two Indonesian EFL textbooks (IET) and two Malaysian ESL textbooks (MET), which are nationally endorsed. The corpora comprised 4,548 tokens collected from the conversations in the textbooks. Data collection involved corpus queries focusing on nine core/central modal verbs: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, and must. The results show that Indonesian and Malaysian textbooks shared the same most frequent modal verb distribution; however, other distributions differed. Besides, English modal verbs in Indonesian textbooks are more static with one-to-one correspondence, while Malaysian textbooks present more dynamic modal verb meanings. Notably, Indonesian EFL textbooks have complete modal meaning representation, which is absent in Malaysian textbooks. Interestingly, the modal verb distributions in both textbooks differ from those in a native corpus, representing actual English use. These results highlight the need for more careful consideration when designing and developing teaching materials, especially in ESL and EFL contexts.
