Abstract

This study demonstrates that pain detection in young children using a YOLO v11-based deep learning model can be performed effectively. By utilizing image data taken from video recordings of immunization and IV infusion procedures, then processed into photo frames and labeled using Roboflow, the model is able to provide good evaluation results. The dataset was divided into 70:20:10 for training, validation, and testing. Model performance evaluation uses accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics, and is visualized through a performance curve and confusion matrix. The results show that YOLO v11 has great potential as a pain detection method, with an mAP@0.5 achievement of 0.893, an accuracy of 78%, a precision of 89.3%, a recall of 97%, and an F1-score of 83%. The high recall value indicates the model's excellent ability to recognize pain expressions, making it relevant for use in clinical contexts to ensure pain symptoms are not overlooked. Overall, this performance demonstrates that YOLO v11 can be a more objective and accurate approach than manual instruments, and has the potential to be developed as a tool for healthcare professionals in pediatric pain assessment.

Abstract

Introduction: Mothers of preterm infants are particularly susceptible to emotional distress, which may impair bonding and hinder optimal infant growth. Nurses hold a critical position in supporting both maternal and infant outcomes through structured interventions. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Mrs-Preemie model, an innovative nursing intervention, on reducing maternal stress, enhancing mother-infant bonding, and improving weight gain in preterm infants. Methods: A mixed-methods exploratory sequential design was employed, using purposive sampling. The qualitative phase involved 24 mothers and 13 nurses to identify care needs, followed by expert panel validation with four professionals. In the quantitative phase, 66 mother-father-preterm infant triads participated. The intervention group received the Mrs Preemie model, which comprised four modules implemented over four weeks; the control group received standard care. Outcomes included maternal stress and bonding scores, and infant weight, assessed at baseline, week two, and week four. Confounding variables were statistically controlled. Results: Thirteen themes emerged to guide the model's development. Statistically significant differences were found between the intervention and control groups over time for maternal stress (P-value=.001), mother-infant bonding (P-value=.001), and infant weight (P-value=.013). After four weeks, the intervention group showed significantly reduced maternal stress (P-value<.001), improved bonding (P-value=.002), and greater infant weight gain (P-value<.001). Improvements in maternal outcomes emerged by week two, while infant weight gain was evident by week four. Conclusion: The Mrs-Preemie model demonstrates effectiveness as an innovative nursing intervention to improve maternal psychological well-being and preterm infant development. Abstract

Background: Preterm infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are at increased risk of mortality, severe morbidity, and adverse long-term neurodevelopmental and growth outcomes. Objective: This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesize evidence on the long- term impact of NEC on neurodevelopmental and growth outcomes in preterm infants, including differences between medical and surgical NEC. Methods: The review adhered to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, with literature searches conducted in ScienceDirect, Sage Journals, ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, and Wiley for studies published between 2015 and 2025. Study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools. From a total of 2,055 articles identified, supplemented by citation tracking, 10 studies were included in this review. Result: The findings indicate that NEC survivors have a higher risk of neurodevelopmental impairment, including lower cognitive, motor, and language scores, behavioral problems, and an increased risk of cerebral palsy, particularly among infants requiring surgical intervention. Regarding growth outcomes, NEC survivors demonstrated persistent deficits in weight, height, and head circumference that may extend into school age and adolescence. Several studies also reported reduced fat mass and decreased bone mineral density in early childhood. Surgical NEC was consistently associated with poorer outcomes than medical NEC. Conclusion: The findings indicate that NEC in preterm infants has significant long-term consequences for neurodevelopment and growth. Comprehensive multidisciplinary follow- up, family empowerment, standardized developmental screening, nutritional optimization, and risk-based early intervention are crucial for improving long-term outcomes and quality of life among NEC survivors.
