Abstract

Abstract

Peat as agricultural land has various obstacles, one of the problems is the decrease in groundwater level. This can have an impact on the availability of nutrients in the soil. Therefore, water management is an absolute necessity for agricultural activities on peatlands. Another effort that can be made to increase the fertility of peatlands as agricultural land is to use organic mulch. This study aims to analyze the effect of peat water level and application of organic mulch on the chemical properties of peat soil planted with corn. This research was conducted in Air Terbit Village, Riau Province and the Soil Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Riau, from February to July 2021. This research used a factorial complete randomized design (CRD) method consisting of 2 factors. The first factor was the various heights of the groundwater level which consisted of 3 levels (30 cm, 40 cm and 50 cm), while the second factor was various types of organic mulch (without mulch, mulch of empty oil palm bunches, mulch of rice straw and mulch of corn stover). The results showed that the GWL 30 cm treatment and rice straw mulch increased the pH, Ca and Mg values better than the other treatments, the N element also increased at GWL 30 cm. In general, the two treatment factors also increased the values of P, CEC and Na in some experimental units. C-organic and K values decreased after the treatment compared to the criteria of the soil before treatment.

Abstract

Development of oil palm plantation areas today is increasingly leading to marginal areas, particularly on peatlands. However, development of peatland as agricultural land or as oil palm plantation has the potential to cause peatland to change from a carbon sink into a source of carbon emission. This objective of this research to determine the effect of utilization soil ameliorant to oil palm yield production and in controlling carbon emission and its impact to soil peat chemical properties. The research was conducted in Rokan Hilir district, Riau. The study was carried out in a randomized block design with three replications and three levels of soil ameliorant. The results show that application of high rate soil ameliorant significantly increase FFB yield relatively from control plot. Based on observational data for two months after first application of boiler ash, the CO2 emission was tends to decrease in plot that get the application of soil ameliorant compared to the control plot. Application of 1.5 tonne/ha/yr of ameliorant give the lowest CO2 emission value. Improvement of soil peat chemical properties by application of boiler ash as soil ameliorant also observed in this study, where the high rate of soil ameliorant significantly improves soil pH and also tends to increase total Potassium and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC).

Abstract

The construction of canal blocking on canals around community agricultural land in Langsat Permai Village through science and technology activities for Mitra Village in 2017-2019 has provided an increase in agricultural yields for both food crops and horticulture. Furthermore, the construction of canal blocking also has an impact on the use of canals for fish farming. Therefore, the purpose of this service activity is to provide assistance in the cultivation of catfish cages and the manufacture of fish feed based on agricultural raw materials and agricultural waste in karang taruna. The success of catfish growth is strongly influenced by the type and amount of feed given. The more feed that is given, the faster the fish will grow but the higher the production costs. Therefore, alternative feeds are needed to reduce the use of fish pellets by making feed made from agricultural raw materials and agricultural waste. Farmer is carried out both in fish cultivation and in the manufacture of fish feed by agricultural raw materials and agricultural waste. Based on the results, all members of karang taruna have understood about catfish farming activities in cages and making fish feed based on agricultural raw materials and agricultural waste. This shows that integrated agriculture has been formed in Langsat Permai Village.
