Abstract

Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, have become primary communication channels and information sources for younger generations in the digital era. However, these platforms also facilitate black campaign practices disseminating false or manipulative information to damage competing brands' reputations. This study examines how consumers in Denpasar City interpret black campaigncontent on TikTok based on their media consumption experiences, while identifying factors such as platform usage intensity, content type preferences, and media literacy levels that shape these interpretations. Employing a descriptive phenomenological qualitative approach, this research purposively selected eight active TikTok users aged 20-21 years in Denpasar. Data were collected through in depth interviews, non participant virtual observation, and digital document analysis, ensuring triangulation for credibility. Findings reveal that consumers perceive black campaigns as deceptive tactics prevalent in beauty and food industries, with interpretations shaped by media experiences that generate cognitive and emotional responses ranging from discomfort to active avoidance behaviors. The study demonstrates that black campaigns produce short-term impacts on consumer attitudes, primarily manifesting as purchase hesitation and skepticism toward implicated brands. Theoretically, this research contributes to reception analysis studies in digital mass communication by demonstrating the active role of audiences in critically interpreting manipulative content. Practically, findings underscore the urgent need to enhance media literacy for cultivating critical awareness of manipulative content and promoting ethical digital marketing practices on TikTok. Abstract

This systematic literature review addresses critical gaps in understanding AI's role in social media communication strategies, specifically examining its impact on influencer marketing, crisis communication, and human-centred trust-building methodologies. Informed by conceptual frameworks of information ethics, user trust, and algorithmic influence, the study distinguishes itself by focusing on recent advancements in fairness-aware machine learning, AI-driven fact-checking, and evolving regulatory landscapes. Analysing 30 peer-reviewed Scopus articles from 2020 to 2025, this study employs a systematic literature review methodology guided by the PRISMA guidelines to ensure rigorous selection and analysis of relevant studies. Findings reveal AI's transformative potential in personalisation and efficiency, yet expose critical ethical challenges like AI-driven deepfakes, algorithmic polarisation, and privacy concerns. It is recommended to develop AI transparency mechanisms, accountability frameworks for public service algorithms, and targeted training for content detection by citizens, as well as provide practical guidance for responsible AI integration in digital communications.

Abstract

The profound and ongoing transformation of digital communication networks is driven by advancements from foundational internet infrastructure like ARPANET to modern interactive platforms and sophisticated AI. This transformation has fundamentally reshaped societal structures and human interaction. It compels a critical reconsideration of established norms. While extensive research exists on individual aspects of this shift, a comprehensive and systematic analysis that synthesises its multifaceted impact on social structures, individual experiences, and emergent challenges remains crucial. Therefore, this Scopus-based systematic literature review aims to identify and categorise key technological advancements and their evolution. It thoroughly analyses the societal, political, and ethical challenges and risks arising from this transformation and synthesises its impact on social structures and individual experiences. The qualitative research design employed PRISMA guidelines, refined through abstract and full-text screening, which yielded 46 articles for in-depth analysis. Key findings indicate a dynamic interplay where technological progress, including advanced AI integration, generates digital anomie, algorithmic manipulation, and regulatory gaps. These factors fundamentally alter communication culture and require a re-evaluation of truth criteria and social stratification. In conclusion, the move towards hybrid, AI-driven communication systems presents complex dilemmas. Future research should focus on developing robust regulatory frameworks for AI, enhancing media literacy against algorithmic influence, and exploring interdisciplinary approaches to mitigate societal fragmentation and ethical challenges.
