Abstract

Pediculus humanus capitis (P.h. capitis) is an ectoparasite which inhabits hair and scalp of human, causing a neglected disease called Pediculus humanus capitis infestation or pediculosis capitis. This disease, easily transmitted between people directly or indirect, often affects girls around 3–12 years old in tropical countries with high humidity. This can be avoided with applying personal hygiene focused on hair area (hair hygiene). Hair hygiene in this study was divided into several parameters, such as frequency of hair washing, shampoo usage, hair drying, towel sharing habit, comb and hair accessories sharing habit, head cover sharing habit, and close contact with an infested person. The aim of this study is not only to know the prevalence of P. h. capitis infestation, but also to determine the correlation between hair hygiene and P. h. capitis infestation among elementary school students in Sukorambi District, Jember Regency. This study was held around January to February 2024 using cross-sectional approach with total 83 respondents. Respondents were given several questions about parameters of hair hygiene and their hair was examined using lice comb to find P. h. capitis. Prevalence of Pediculosis capitis infestation among elementary school students in Sukorambi District reached 71.1%. Statistical analysis showed that towel sharing habit and comb and other hair accessories sharing habit had a significant relationship with P. h. capitis infestation (p-value <0.05). Multivariate analysis using logistic regression showed that comb and other hair accessories sharing habit were the most significant hair hygiene parameters.

Abstract

Empowering of the Waste Bank Unit (BSU) through business diversification and optimization of waste utilization has become an urgent need in an effort to increase income and the sustainability of its activities. The Biology Department is collaborating with BSU ASRI, which has been operating since 2021 as a partner and has experience and knowledge in waste management, striving to applicate research results. The Zoological Integrated and Research Application (ZIRA) Research Group, with an interest in native chicken farming research in the field of Avian Immunity, is attempting to implement a model of native chicken farming to utilize organic waste that was previously used as feed for Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots. Previously, BSU ASRI utilized organic waste for raising BSF maggots as protein-rich animal feed. The methods used were: incubation of a ready-to-produce chicken farming model by building coops and managing their maintenance, incubation of household-scale farming by providing 1-month-old chicks to BSU members, and independent chick production using a small-scale electric incubator. The results of the activities showed a positive response from the community, as seen from their willingness to raise chickens and the beginning of its adoption in several households. Another benefit is the use of chicken livestock products, starting from ready-to-consume eggs and manure, as well as the utilization of maggot production as part of organic waste utilization.

Abstract

Helminth infection are still a problem in the world. According to WHO, children aged 1-4 years have a high morbidity of helminthic infections. The number of Helminthinfections in children is influenced by several factors, one of which is PHBS (Clean and Healthy Living Behavior). In addition, children who are stunted or malnourished are prone to Helminthinfections. This can be prevented with the role of mother's knowledge regarding PHBS, stunting, and nutrition. This study aims to analyze the relationship between mother's knowledge about PHBS, stunting, and nutrition with Helminths in toddlers in Jelbuk District, Jember Regency. This research has a type of observational analytic research with a cross-sectional design. The population consists of mothers who have toddlers aged 12-59 months in Jelbuk District, Jember Regency. The sampling technique used consecutive sampling and obtained 69 mothers. Knowledge obtained from interviews using a questionnaire. Helminthinfections in toddlers are obtained from stool examination using flotation techniques. Data analysis using Mann Whitney. The results showed that there were 4 toddlers (5.7%) who had Helminth infections. 3 toddlers were infected with Ascaris lumbricoides (4.34%) and the rest were hookHelminths (1.44%). The majority of mothers have good knowledge on all indicators of knowledge of PHBS and nutrition, but lack of knowledge on stunting. Analysis using the Mann Whitney test showed that there was a relationship with Helminths only on 2 indicators of PHBS, namely smoking (Sig.(2-tailed)=0.036) and house cleanliness (Sig.(2-tailed)=0.027). The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between knowledge of house hygiene and smoking with Helminths in children under five and there is no relationship between knowledge of healthy latrines, clean water, garbage disposal, consumption of fruit vegetables, stunting, and nutrition..

Abstract

Cryptosporidium sp. is one of the waterborne protozoa involving water as the main medium of transmission causing cryptosporidiosis in animals and humans and its presence is influenced by various things including hygiene and sanitation of the community. This cross-sectional study aims to determine the association between the implementation of the community-led total sanitation and the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in clean water sources. The research was conducted from October 2020 to June 2021 in Sukokerto Village, Sukowono, Jember Regency. The data were obtained from interview with the respondents using structured questionnaires. The presence of oocysts was examined by microscopic observations with sedimentation methods and Modified Ziehl=Neelsen staining, and the data were analyzed using Spearman rho statistical test. The results showed that there were 12 (20.3%) household with good category at the implementation of community-led total sanitation, 28 (47.5%) household with moderate category, and 19 (32.2%) household with poor category. The presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts was found in 6 (10.2%) samples of clean water sources. The results of statistical tests with Spearman rho showed a p-value=0.098, so that there was no significant association between the implementation of community-led total sanitation and the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in clean water sources in study location.

Abstract

Pediculosis capitis is an infestation of the ectoparasite Pediculus humanus var. capitis on the hair and scalp, which remains a public health issue with a high prevalence, particularly among school-aged children and adolescents. Islamic boarding schools are highly vulnerable to transmission due to communal living patterns and the frequent sharing of personal items. This study aimed to determine the relationship between hair hygiene knowledge and the occurrence of Pediculosis capitis among female students. An observational-analytic, cross-sectional study was conducted with 52 respondents selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected through microscopic examination of hair lice samples. The results revealed a significant relationship between hair hygiene knowledge and Pediculosis capitis infestation. The students’ knowledge and hair hygiene practices were relatively low, as reflected by the high prevalence rate of infestation (72.5%). Therefore, increasing health education and promotion regarding hair hygiene in boarding schools is essential as a preventive strategy against Pediculosis capitis.
