Abstract

The Polbeng Research Vessel is a small research ship developed by Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis (Polbeng) in collaboration with CV. Fatih Bahari Engineering. The vessel is constructed from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and has principal dimensions of 9 m length overall (LOA), 2.2 m breadth, and 1.2 m depth, powered by an 85 HP outboard engine. This study aims to evaluate the seakeeping and motion comfort performance of the vessel to support research activities involving personnel and onboard equipment. The seakeeping analysis is conducted using a frequency-domain approach based on Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs), where ship motions are evaluated under regular wave conditions. Four operational cases are considered, involving two wave heights (0.2 m and 0.4 m) and two wave encounter directions, namely beam seas (90°) and head seas (180°). Three ship motions are analyzed: heave, roll, and pitch. The results indicate that roll motion in beam seas conditions exhibits the most significant response compared to other motions, which is consistent with the theoretical characteristics of small vessels having shorter restoring arms for roll motion. Overall, the vessel’s motion responses remain within acceptable limits and satisfy established comfort criteria based on NORDFORSK 1987, STANAG 4154, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), ISO 2631/1, ISO 2631/3, and BS 6841:1987 standards. The findings provide technical insight into the seakeeping behavior and comfort performance of HDPE-based small research vessels and serve as a reference for the design, evaluation, and development of environmentally friendly research and working vessels to enhance operational safety and effectiveness.

Abstract

The growing demand for environmentally friendly fuels has encouraged the use of biodiesel as an alternative to fossil diesel. This study explores the production of B50 biodiesel derived from waste cooking oil using the transesterification method, with two catalyst variations: (1) 1000 mL methanol + 25 g NaOH and (2) 1200 mL methanol + 30 g NaOH per 5 liters of feedstock. The research aimed to evaluate the effects of catalyst concentration on the physical properties of biodiesel (density, viscosity, and calorific value), as well as its impact on engine performance metrics, including torque, specific fuel consumption (SFC), thermal efficiency, and exhaust gas opacity. Experimental testing was conducted using a four-stroke diesel engine at varying loads and speeds. Results showed that both fuel blends met the Indonesian standards for density, while only the 1200 mL + 30 g NaOH blend met the standard for viscosity. The biodiesel prepared using 1000 mL methanol and 25 g NaOH demonstrated superior engine performance, with a maximum torque of 8.92 Nm, minimum SFC (406.90 g/kWh), and highest thermal efficiency (21.28%) at 1000 RPM and 4000 W load. Additionally, the biodiesel prepared using 1200 mL methanol and 30 g NaOH produced lower exhaust opacity. In conclusion, while increased catalyst dosage improves fuel cleanliness and compliance with standards, the lower catalyst yields the best balance of performance metrics, making it a promising for biodiesel application in diesel engines.

Abstract

As an institution equipped with resources and experts in the field of technology, universities hold significant potential to develop and provide innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the elderly. Therefore, this activity aims to design and implement a specialized walking aid tailored specifically for older adults. This assistive device will be developed with careful consideration of the unique needs and limitations commonly experienced by the elderly. The introduction of such a device is expected to promote greater independence and active engagement among elderly individuals in their daily lives. Ultimately, it is anticipated that this will enhance their overall quality of life and generate positive social impacts across the broader community in Kalimantan. Furthermore, this activity emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts among universities, local governments, healthcare institutions, and the community in supporting and effectively implementing this initiative. The project will begin with consultations involving neighborhood leaders (RT) and local residents. Upon reaching a consensus, the next stages will involve socialization, the design and development process, and the eventual delivery of a prototype that meets the identified needs.

Abstract

Ship vibration is part of the problem with ship dynamics. In addition to producing noise that disturbs the comfort of crew and passengers, engine structures and components can be damaged due to vibrations that are too high, resulting in material fatigue and material deformation. In order to avoid the damage that occurs and in order to improve the comfort of passengers and crew, shipbuilding must comply with vibration and noise standards. This study aims to analyze the value of vibration and the value of noise that arises on the aluminum fast boat as a result of excitation in terms of the main engine. Calculation of natural frequency and mode shapes is done using ship modeling with Finite Element Analysis Software. The excitation frequency of the main engine is 35.014 Hz. Based on the system's amplitude calculation, the values range from 3.273 x 10-7 to 2.703 x 10-6. Then the vibration standard values obtained are in the range of values from 0.253 to 2.093. Then, the noise radiation value obtained is in the range of 134,582 dB to 130,449 dB. All research results regarding vibration and noise standards in the engine room and passenger deck of aluminum ships obtained results that meet the standards, so it can be concluded that the ship's construction is safe from excessive vibration and noise.

Abstract

KMP Bambit is an Indonesian Ro-Ro ship that carries passengers. It is public transportation from Merauke Regency to Asmat Regency and vice versa. The ship is still using fluorescent lamps as its main lighting source. This study presents a comparative study of the efficiency level between the use of fluorescent lamps and LED lamps in the room aboard the ship. The method used is the zonal cavity (lumen) method by dividing each room into three parts, namely the height ceiling cavity (hcc), height room cavity (hrc), and height floor cavity (hfc). The illumination value was determined according to the standards set for each room. The principal results for comparing lighting power on KMP Bambit showed that the total lighting electrical load accumulated using the fluorescent lighting type was 24.31kW. In contrast, LED lighting had a total lighting electrical load of 16.51 kW. This reduced the generator power from 68 kW to 60 kW, which could improve the efficiency of ship fuel operational costs. This study can evaluate the existing Ro-Ro ship fleet and be a good option in the process of building Ro-Roships in the future.
