Abstract

Algebra plays a vital role in developing students' higher-order thinking skills; however, in many junior high schools, algebra instruction remains focused on mechanical procedures rather than conceptual understanding and contextual problem solving. This approach limits students' ability to engage meaningfully with mathematical content, particularly in culturally diverse classrooms where learning materials often lack relevance to students’ lived experiences. To address this gap, this study presents the development of culturally grounded algebra learning materials using Google Slides, chosen for its accessibility, interactivity, and collaborative features, which offer distinct advantages over conventional static media. The study employed the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model within a Research and Development (R&D) framework to systematically design and evaluate the learning materials. Conducted with seventh-grade students at SMP Lorotuan using a pretest-posttest design, the results revealed a significant increase in student achievement, with scores improving from 45.36 to 86.61 and an N-Gain value of 0.42, classified as moderate by Hake’s standard. Observations and survey data confirmed the materials’ practicality and strong cultural relevance, with students awarding a perfect cultural relevance score (560/560) and reporting increased appreciation for their local culture. This study concludes that integrating local wisdom into interactive algebra instruction can effectively enhance students’ mathematical understanding and cultural identity. The findings support the continued development of culturally responsive digital learning tools that address diverse student needs and promote equitable mathematics education.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance students’ understanding and interest in mathematics, particularly in topics often perceived as difficult—trigonometry and statistics. The activity was conducted at SMKS St. Willibrodus Betun, Malaka Regency, involving six students from Universitas Katolik Widya Mandira (UNWIRA) and Universidade Oriental Timor Lorosa’e (UNITAL) Timor Leste. The implementation method consisted of educational outreach using contextual and participatory approaches, along with inclusive language (Indonesian, Tetum, and English) tailored to the students’ and facilitators’ backgrounds. Trigonometry was taught using a student-designed teaching aid called the "trigonometry wheel" from UNWIRA, while statistics was introduced through an interactive educational gamecard developed by students from UNITAL. The results indicated a significant improvement in student enthusiasm, engagement, and comprehension of mathematical concepts that were previously considered abstract and intimidating. Discussions, observations, and practice questions demonstrated that visual and interactive methods were highly effective in reducing math anxiety. Moreover, the cross-border collaboration enriched the learning experiences of both students and facilitators, while promoting values of tolerance, cooperation, and educational diplomacy in the border region. This initiative proves that innovative learning media and contextual approaches can serve as effective solutions for improving the quality of mathematics education in vocational schools

Abstract

Ethnomathematics-based research and development play a vital role in connecting cultural heritage with mathematics to enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of mathematical concepts. This study employs a scientometric indicator analysis to explore the development of ethnomathematics-based research from 2014 to 2024. Using bibliometric methods and network visualization via VOSviewer software, 614 articles from Scopus and ProQuest databases were analyzed to examine trends in publication, author profiles, types of developed products, and development model preferences. The findings reveal a steady annual increase in publications, peaking in 2020. Indonesia accounts for 83.33% of the studies, highlighting national dominance. Most articles were authored by lecturers and final-year students, with a primary focus on developing instructional tools such as learning designs and teaching materials (each at 16.67%). The general design model was the most utilized (55.56%), followed by the Plomp and ADDIE models. Limited documentation and the absence of digital versions of local culture-based products were identified as key motivations behind the development efforts. This study also maps keyword co-occurrences and author collaboration networks to visualize the direction of research. The dominance of practical-oriented outputs highlights a need to emphasize evaluation and long-term implementation stages. Moreover, the lack of global contributions suggests the importance of cross-national collaboration to broaden ethnomathematics research perspectives. Overall, this scientometric review offers strategic insights and identifies opportunities to strengthen product design, methodological rigor, and global engagement in ethnomathematics-based education research. Future developments must prioritize standardized evaluation aspects that are rooted in local cultural contexts. In addition, the integration of technology in the form of interactive digital media should be enhanced to meet the needs of 21st-century learning. These findings provide a valuable reference for researchers seeking to design culturally responsive educational products and encourage more collaborative and sustained research in the field of ethnomathematics.   Keywords: scientometric, development, ethnomathematics.
