Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of using Jigsaw Strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMPN 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. The research design was pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was VII HN chosen by using cluster sampling technique. The data were calculated by using Microsoft Excel 2010 and analyzed by using SPSS. The result of the data analysis showed that mean scores of the pre-test was 70.27 and the mean score of the post-test was 85.29. In other words, the mean scores of the post-test was higher than the pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test was higher than t-table (13.880 > 2.034) at significance level of 5%. It can be concluded that Hypothesis was accepted. Thus, there was a significant effect of using Jigsaw Strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMPN 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending Descriptive Texts. Several recommendations were given for students such as study in group like Jigsaw and be more focus to increase their vocabulary. In line with it, the teachers need to gave more attention on how to improve students’ comprehension when implementing Jigsaw Strategy in the class.Key Words: Effect, Jigsaw, Strategy, Descriptive Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to compared between ability of the first year female and male students of SMK PGRI Pekanbaru in comprehending Narrative texts. The number of population was 213 students divided into seven classes. The writer used cluster random sampling technique to determine the sample. The samples were 28 students. The needed data were taken from the students’ score in comprehending narrative texts. The test comprehends five narrative texts of which all text has six items or 30 items all together. The time allocation was 80 minutes. Based on the research finding, it can be found: first, the ability of the students is in good level. Second, the mean score of female students was higher than mean score of male students (71,17 % > 62%) in comprehending narrative texts. This research finding confirmed the theories that female students are better than male students in language learning. T-test formula proved that the differences of female and male scores were significant statistically.Key Words: Comparative, Ability, Comprehending, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the significant effect of Reciprocal Teaching Method on reading hortatory exposition text of the second year students of SMA Kristen Kalam Kudus Pekanbaru academic year 2018/2019. The selected sample was XI MIPA 1. The sample was selected by using random sampling technique. This research used pre-experimental research design of one group pre-test post-test and collected the data by using test on hortatory exposition text. The test this research was multiple choice test consisted of five option (a/b/c/d/e) The result of the study was found that the mean score of the pre-test was 74.75 while the post-test was 83.87 Therefore it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Reciprocal Teaching Method on reading comprehension of the second year student of SMA Kristen Kalam Kudus Pekanbaru. Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in students’ achievement before and after being thought by Reciprocal Teaching Method. It can be stated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Reciprocal Teaching Method gives positive and enjoyable learning environments in the classroom. It also enhanced the students’ participation and interaction during the learning process. Students comprehended the story completely by the prediction that helped students to develop their reading and concentrating ability through Reciprocal Teaching Method.Key Words: Effect, Reciprocal Teaching Method, Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract : This research was aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru in comprehending report texts. The data were collected from April to May. The population of this research is the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. The number of sample is 39 students who are chosen by using cluster sampling technique. This research is a pre experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test is 61.33 while in post-test is 78.13. It showed us that the mean score of the post-test was higher than the mean score of the pre-test. In other words, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that, there is a significant effect of Small Group Discussion method on the ability of the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru in comprehending report texts. It is suggested that Small Group Discussion is one of the appropriate method to be implemented in teaching for comprehending report texts. It can be conducted by focusing to the students’ context.Keywords: Comprehension, Small Group Discussion Method, Report Texts.

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 14 Pekanbaru in comprehending hortatory exposition text. This research focuses on students’ comprehension about hortatory exposition text in terms of finding main ideas, factual information, finding meaning of difficult word, finding references, finding restatement, identifying the generic structure, language feature and social function .The data were collected using the multiple choice test. The test contained 40 items. The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. Based on the result of the data analysis, it is found out that main idea (56.25) is classified as mediocre, the mean score of finding factual information is also (56.25) and classified as mediocre, the mean score of finding meaning of vocabulary (64.06) is classified as good. Meanwhile, the mean score of finding reference (64.38) is classified as good, the mean score of finding restatement (68.4) is classified as good. Meanwhile the mean score for the generic structure is (61.8) classified as good, the mean score for identifying language feature is (68.7) classified as good, and the last one is the result of the mean score of the identifying social function (63.7) is classified as good also. As whole, the researcher got the final result for the students’ ability in comprehending hortatory exposition text is (63.04), it means that the student ability is classified as good.Keywords : Study, Ability, Hortatory exposition text.

Abstract

Abstract : This research aimed to find out the effect of using Jigsaw techique on the ability of the first year students of SMAN 7 Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. This study was one group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this study was the first year students of SMAN 7 Pekanbaru which consisted of 7 classes with the total of 238 students. The sample of this study was X.4 class with 35 students. The writer, during treat the students, found that students’ motivation to read the text increase. Besides, students got more confidences to split out their opinion while discussion and present the result in front of the class. After treatment was held, the writer distributed the tests. The instrument of the research was a reading test with multiple choice type. The result showed a strong correlation between Jigsaw technique and students’ reading comprehension. Tobs result also showed that the students’ mean score of the post-test (75.89) was higher than the pre-test (64.74). Besides, the results of the analysis showed that the t-test was higher than the ttable (2.704<15.191>1.684) at the level sig. of 0.01 and 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) n-1=34. Based on the data calculation, the results showed the effects of using Jigsaw technique on the ability of the first year students of SMAN 7 Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. Based on the result of this study, the writer over some suggestions. For the teacher, they are expected to arrange the teaching and learning process well in order to make students more active and gives respond well to the material. This study also useful for students. Students are expected to study more and respond in learning process. At last, for the next researcher, they are expected to improve and solve the problems that the researcher does not achieve at this time.Keywords: Jigsaw, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed to investigate the effect of using Short Dialogue Memorization on the speaking ability of the second year students at SMP IT Al Ihsan Boarding School, Sik Hulu, Kampar. This study was pre-experimental research. The population of this research was the students in Hunain class at SMP IT Al Ihsan Boarding School. This research was conducted by applying Short Dialogue Memorization in teaching speaking to the pre-experimental group (Hunain Class) selected by employing cluster random sampling method. There were 20 students in pre-experimental group, who had a pre-test, then they were taught by using Short Dialogue Memorization, then they finally had a post-test to see the increase of their scores. After all data were collected, the researcher calculated them by using t-Test. This study formed findng with the correlation was 0.931, it can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Short Dialogue Memorization on the speaking ability of the second year students at SMP IT Al Ihsan Boarding School that could be seen from the improvement of students’ scores in post-test.Keywords: Speaking, Speaking Ability, Short Dialogue Memorization

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed at finding out the ability of the second year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru in rearranging scrambled sentences into good paragraphs. This research focuses on students’ ability in rearranging scrambled sentences into good paragraphs based on rhetorical markers of constructing sentences. The data were collected using sentences-reordering test. The test contained 20items of scrambled sentences. The population were the second year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru that consist of 220 students. The sample size were 52 students who are from Class XI TAV and XI TSP chosen by using cluster sampling technique. The needed data were collected by giving written test that consist of 2 different of texts that posses different rhetorical markers. Based on the research, the data was found that students ability in rearranging scrambled sentences is in mediocre level of ability with the mean score was 60. According to this study, it is expected that teachers can use this type of test in the form of scrambled sentences to increase students’ ability in rearranging scrambled sentences into good paragraphs.Keywords : Ability, Scrambled Sentences, Paragraphs

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the student’s ability in comprehending descriptive texts and aimed to find out the students ability in comprehending descriptive texts for each component and the level of Bloom’s Taxonomy Revised indicated in the ability. This research was conducted at SMPN 38 Pekanbaru that collected April to May 2017. The try out class was VIII-3 (30 students) and the sample was VIII-1 (30 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. The result showed that the ability of the second year students of SMPN 38 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts for each component is in good level which the mean score was 61.7, however, the students have not passed the minimum score of the school which is 75. For the level of remembering; finding factual information the mean score was 78, finding meaning of difficult words was 40.7. The level of understanding (finding references) the mean score was 76. For the analyzing level; finding main idea the mean score was 55.3, finding restatement was 50, and the level of evaluating (finding social function) was 70. Therefore, this research suggested the English teachers to focus on the level and components that students still find difficulities and categorized them into poor level. Students should learn the components in descriptive texts and other text types. Further researchers are expected to find the standard guidance of classification of Bloom’s Taxonomy Revised indicated the components of reading comprehension.Key Words: Student’s Ability, Bloom’s Taxonomy Revised, Comprehending Descriptive Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: The research was aimed to investigate whether clustering technique can affect students’ writing ability. The research was conducted at the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Rengat. In conducting the research, the researcher applied a pre-experimental method with XI IPA 1 as the sample. There were 36 students as the sample of this research. This research design used one group pre-test post-test. They were taught by conventional technique. They were given pre-test at the beginning, the post test at the end of the treatment. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. From the calculation, the researcher found that t-test was 7.933 and the t-table was 2.030. Since t-test was higher than t-table, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. It means that there is significant effect in using Clustering Technique on students’ ability in writing descriptive texts.Key Words: Writing, Writing Ability, Clustering Technique, Descriptive Texts
