Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the implementation of the experimental method in science learning and the obstacles faced by teachers, as well as to identify the application of pre-lab in science learning. Research design was survey which is non-experimental quantitative research. The participants were 26 teachers who teach subjects in the sciences, namely Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Science as integrated subjects. Data were collected through online questionnaires using google forms and were analyzed descriptively. The results show that experimental activities have not been fully applied to science learning. Most teachers provide the tools and materials needed in learning activities in the laboratory and provide work procedures to students. The constraints that are faced by teachers in applying the experimental method are related to facilities and infrastructure, student characters, and experiment time allocation. Most of the teachers have also carried out pre-lab activities, but they are still dominated by lectures from the teacher. This study also explored the pre-lab model to be developed, almost all teachers agreed if the pre-lab was developed in the form of virtual learning. The forms of media that teacher’s interest in for pre-lab activities are videos and android applications

Abstract

This study investigates teachers' learning in technology-ethnoscience professional development for 3 months and its impact on science teachers' TPACK in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)-Indonesia. These secondary school science teachers participate in PD that focuses on communication of information technology and ethnoscience-based materials and their applications in designing and conducting classroom instruction. Five science teacher instruments (n=28) were used, i.e. TPACK test questions, lesson plan analysis rubric, teaching observation sheets, response questionnaires and interview guides. Data is collected before, during, and after program implementation which is carried out every week. Descriptive statistics and Paired Sample T-Test were used for analysis. It was found that teachers' TPACK increased after studying in the program with significant benefits. In addition, the ability to design and implement learning changes to be more oriented towards technology-ethnoscience integration, but the benefits are not significant for all science teachers. This study suggests that teachers' PD programs in the future need to consider aspects of integrating technology in learning and the process is carried out not only when the program is run, but continues every day in class so as to create habits for science teachers. Indonesia currently needs more longitudinal PD to ensure that TPACK is integrated in science teaching and its usefulness for student learning outcomes

Abstract

Misuse of food preservatives in the society is alarming that it is necessary to raise students’ awareness about the danger to their health. Educating children about healthy food requires more than just promoting understanding but more importantly practicing reasoning and decision making. This study analyses the impact of lessons designed to improve students’ understanding, reasoning, and decision making on the use of food preservatives. Participants of the study were 30 students of 7th grade junior high school taught by a teacher who has been trained on argumentation-based teaching strategies. During the lessons students were provided with dilemmatic cases that stimulate their thinking followed by discussion before finally making a decision. Data were collected prior and after the lessons using a three-tier test that require students to provide answers that consist of explanation, reason, and evidence. The study shows improvement of students’ understanding of the content, reasoning skills, and decision making. Moreover, the study also reveals that the majority of the students tend to view food preservatives from the usefulness side but ignore the danger. The findings suggest that argumentation-based teaching strategy results in students’ deeper understanding of the content, reasoning and decision-making skills. This study recommends that efforts to promote students’ awareness of food preservatives and healthy diet can be done through a systematic and well-planned teaching strategy that encourage students to reason and to think deeply about the positive and the negative sides of food preservatives

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sustainability awareness of students at SMAN 1 Ciasem, Subang, West Java which is adjusted to environmental pollution material. The method used in this research is descriptive method with a quantitative approach. This research was conducted at SMAN 1 Ciasem with a total sample of 30 students. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire consisting of 20 statements consisting of 10 positive statements and 10 negative statements. The results in this study include the average value and percentage of students' awareness of sustainability in general, based on indicators, and gender. The mean value for positive statements of students' awareness of sustainability is 3.14 and for negative statements, it is 1.89 in the high category. In addition, this study also produced data in the form of differences in sustainability awareness based on gender. The average percentage of male students' sustainability awareness in positive statements was 77.19% and that of women was 78.86%. The conclusion in this study is that students' awareness of sustainability has a high category. This indicates that students carry out habits that always pay attention to sustainability awareness. Based on their gender, female are more aware of sustainable environmental sustainability than male
