Abstract

The Lekopancing River, located in Maros Regency, is a crucial source of clean water supply for the people of Makassar City and the surrounding wereas. This study aims to analyze the diversity and role of insects as bioindicators of water quality based on aquatic insect families. The study was conducted in the upstream, middle, and downstream parts of the Lekopancing River, using handpicking and kick sampling for data collection. The collected aquatic insect samples were then identified and analyzed using the diversity index Shannon-Wienner (H') and Hilsenhoff Family Biotic Index (HFBI) methods, which were widely accepted in ecological research for assessing biodiversity and water quality. The number of aquatic insects found was 614 individuals, consisting of 13 species, 13 families, and 7 orders. The diversity index of aerial insects in the upstream and middle parts of the Lekopancing River was 1.26 and 1.72, while in the downstream part, it was 0.42. The HFBI value of 3.26 in the upstream section is still very good; in the middle section, the HFBI value of 4.84 is considered good; in the downstream section, the HFBI value of 7.00 indicates poor quality.

Abstract

Management of honey bees, especially Apis cerana bees, is widely cultivated by farmers in Sulawesi. Lack of cultivation knowledge and management causes productivity to decrease. A. cerana bee cultivation training at the Mekar Farmers Group in Timpuseng Village, Maros Regency, aims to increase farmers' knowledge and skills in bee colony management, honey harvesting techniques and processing of bee products. This training method includes socialization, presentation of material, discussion and evaluation. Based on data, the majority of farmers (70%) harvest honey by pressing it, while 50% of farmers increase their colonies by dividing existing colonies, and the other 50% hunt in the forest. However, only 30% of farmers were able to differentiate between bee products such as honey, beeswax and bee bread, indicating the need for additional education. This training uses a practical approach to support environmentally friendly colony management and diversification of bee products as added economic value. Evaluation results show that this training contributes significantly to improving farmers' technical skills, encouraging the adoption of sustainable methods, and supporting the preservation of local ecosystems. The training participation rate reached 70%, indicating the high interest of farmers in developing bee cultivation. This training provides a strong foundation for the development of independent and sustainable bee-based businesses.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Nuraeni S, Tiwi AA, Prastiyo A. 2025. Pollen foraging preference based on floral resource distance in Tetragonula biroi. Asian J Agric 9: 423-432. The stingless bee Tetragonula biroi plays a vital role as a pollinator and depends primarily on pollen and nectar for nutrition. Understanding its foraging behavior is essential for optimizing floral resource management in meliponiculture systems. This study investigates the foraging preferences of T. biroi based on the distance of floral resources in Awani Bee Garden, Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Pollen identification was conducted using light microscopy on bee bread samples collected from three hives, and the spatial distribution of flowering plants around the hives was documented. This research was conducted from November 2023 to February 2025, using descriptive analysis of pollen types and plant distance from the hive. A Spearman’s correlation analysis was also conducted to examine the relationship between the distance of floral sources and the percentage of pollen collected. Foraging preference was operationally defined as the percentage of pollen collected from each plant species relative to its distance from the hive. Results revealed that T. biroi collected pollen from 18 plant species located at distances ranging from 2 to 498 m. The most dominant pollen sources were Clerodendrum paniculatum (16.87%), Macaranga tanarius (15.20%), and Carica papaya (13.97%). Over 70% of the total pollen came from plant species located within 10 m of the hive, such as Capsicum annuum (2 m, 6.93%), Mangifera indica (2 m, 7.49%). However, the bees also utilized distant sources such as Turnera subulata (485 m, 0.56%) and Antigonon leptopus (498 m, 2.12%), demonstrating flexible foraging behavior within their ecological range. Spearman's correlation showed a weak negative relationship between plant distance and pollen percentage (? = -0.387) with p>0.05, indicating that the preference for nearby floral sources was not statistically significant but ecologically observable. These findings suggest that while proximity plays a role in foraging, T. biroi exhibits adaptable behavior based on resource distribution.

Abstract

Abstract. Nuraeni S, Soma AS, Sadapotto A, Mujetahid A, Baharuddin, Nur RJB, Huda N, Fattah A. 2024. The pathological pebrine diseases of Bombyx mori caused by Nosema bombycis (mNb) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 2990-2995. South Sulawesi is the main producer of raw silk in Indonesia. However, over the past decade, raw silk production has plummeted due to an epizootic of pebrine disease. Pebrine disease is caused by the obligate parasite microsporidium Nosema bombycis Filatova, 1942 (mNb) (Microsporidia: Nosematidae). This study aims to identify mNb spore morphology and pathological characteristics, including disease symptoms, infectivity tests, and pebrine epizootic history. Spore morphology was observed using a light microscope. Infectivity test with a spore concentration of 1×108 mL-1 in 3rd, and 4th instars, inoculation using the smear method on mulberry leaves. Information on pebrine disease rates was obtained from documents of egg certification between 2002 and 2016. The research results show that the spores are oval in shape. The size of the spores can reach a length of 4.57±0.46 µm and a width of 2.24±0.493 µm. The main symptoms of this disease are the change in color of the cuticle to brownish with irregular black spots and non-uniform growth because many fail to molt, and the larval phase increases by 8-10 days. Inoculation in the 3rd instar can cause larval death starting on the second day after inoculation, with a cumulative mortality rate of 64%. Inoculation of the 4th instar, death begins on the eighth day, and a cumulative mortality rate of 52%. The pebrine epizootic in 2010 reached 72.42%, which reduced production by 57%. Understanding the pathological causes of pebrine disease and its history is useful to prevent rather than control the occurrence of the next epizootic.

Abstract

Abstract. Budiaman, Nuraeni S, Nurhaini, Prastiyo A. 2025. Composition and role of ants (Formicidae) as indicators of habitat conditions in different stands in urban forest, Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 145-152. Urban forests provide ecological services such as air, microclimate, and environmental biodiversity, ecosystems in urban areas, assessing their quality and health through ecological indicators such as ants (Formicidae), which are very sensitive to habitat changes and serve as effective bioindicators for urban forest management sustainable. This research aims to identify the diversity and distribution of ant species and assess the potential of ants as ecological indicators of environmental conditions in urban forests. Sampling was done in three different stands: teak (Gmelina arborea), suren (Toona sureni), and mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni). The trap method uses a pitfall trap to collect ant specimens, which were then identified. Data analysis was carried out by calculating diversity, dominance, abundance, and evenness indices, as well as further analysis using correlation and principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that there was significant variation in ant species composition among various stand types with 9 species, 6 genera, and 3 subfamilies. Species from the Camponotus genus dominate in urban forests, with Camponotus virulens dominating in teak stands, Camponotus sp. in suren stands, and Pheidole plagiaria in mahogany stands. The findings of the correlation analysis demonstrated a highly significant and positive relationship between humidity and ant dominance (0.989). This suggests that humidity is the environmental factor that exerts the greatest influence on the increased dominance of specific species. Furthermore, the very strong and positive relationship between diversity (H') and evenness (E) (0.943) indicates that ecosystems with high diversity tend to have a more even distribution of species. PCA analysis revealed a relationship between ant species composition and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. The differences in ant species (Formicidae) composition across various stand types in the Makassar city forest are influenced by environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, making them suitable ecological indicators for assessing habitat quality and urban forest ecosystem health. This information supports sustainable urban forest management and biodiversity conservation efforts in urban environments, highlighting the importance and significance of ants in ecological studies.
