Abstract

Indonesia has imposed penalties for criminal acts of corruption by sentencing defendants to additional crimes, in addition to the main crime through court decisions. As a text, a court decision is also a practice that uses language like any other text. Therefore, it cannot be denied to analyze the text using the field of forensic linguistic studies. This research aims to explore the argumentative structure of court decisions regarding criminal acts of corruption and additional crimes as argumentative texts. In his analysis, all legal considerations become the basis for decision making. The data in this research is the text of the Jambi District Court decision no. 18/Pid.Sus-TPK/2023/PN Jmb using a qualitative descriptive method referring to a forensic linguistic approach. The results of this research include several things, namely the panel of judges used an indictment that had a high level of empathy and focalization because the indictment was obtained from interviews with the defendants. Thus, it can be concluded that because the claims of 'legitimate and convincing' and 'committing criminal acts of corruption together' are met argumentatively. However, the claim of 'subjected to criminal acts of corruption and additional crimes' needs to be questioned. This is because the six defendants had different sentences. In fact, in the indictment the detailed amount of money received is stated, so this claim is problematic from an argumentative theory perspective.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the dynamics that occur as a result of conflict between two opposing parties, namely the minority party and the ruling party. The approach used is qualitative descriptive with a three-dimensional analysis of Norman model discourse Fairclough, namely texts, discourse practices, and sociocultural practices. Abstract

This study explores the representation of sexual violence and women's resistance in Shireishou's novel Obsessive Loves. Utilizing a qualitative approach with content analysis, the research examines how the narrative addresses the psychological trauma of the victims and the patriarchal social structures that perpetuate sexual violence. Drawing on Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theories alongside Walby’s feminist perspectives and the concept of rape culture, the study identifies and interprets critical excerpts from the novel. The findings reveal that Obsessive Loves portrays sexual violence as a systemic issue tied to power dynamics within patriarchal structures, reflecting deep psychological impacts such as PTSD and dissociation. The novel also highlights women's resistance as a form of empowerment and recovery, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and social support. This research contributes to feminist literary studies by demonstrating how fiction serves as a powerful medium for critiquing patriarchal norms and advocating for social change.

Abstract

This study examines how undergraduate students perceive and experience the Flipped Classroom strategy in a Business English speaking course. In this model, instruction moves outside the classroom through videos and readings so that in‑class sessions are reserved for interactive activities. Although widely used in general EFL contexts, evidence of Flipped Classroom’s effectiveness in Business English, which belongs to English for Specific Purposes (ESP), is limited. The research employed a mixed‑methods design. A fourteen‑item Likert‑scale survey completed by 133 Indonesian English majors assessed perceptions of efficiency, engagement, time management and satisfaction. Semi‑structured interviews with seven volunteers provided insights on preparation, confidence, anxiety and collaboration. Students watched pre‑class videos via the university’s learning platform and participated in discussions, role‑plays and problem‑based tasks during class. The quantitative results showed positive perceptions: efficiency mean 3.91, motivation and engagement mean 3.76, time management and enjoyment mean 3.73, and satisfaction mean 4.24. Interviews highlighted that pre‑class preparation improved self‑regulated learning, boosted confidence, reduced speaking anxiety and promoted teamwork. The study’s single‑institution scope and modest sample limit generalisation; larger, diverse studies with objective measures are advised. For practice, educators should provide concise pre‑class materials, clear instructions, and adequate technological support, while designing learner‑centred, communicative classroom activities. The findings contribute to the sparse literature on Flipped Classroom in Business English and suggest its potential for enhancing communication skills and learner autonomy in professional language courses.

Abstract

The need for children's literature that aligns with developmental stages and integrates cultural values is increasingly urgent to support contextual literacy. This study analyzes the alignment of manuscripts from the Ministry of Education's reading material competition with official leveling guidelines. Employing a qualitative approach with literature analysis, ten manuscripts from the 2023 Central Java Language Center competition were selected via purposive sampling. Analysis focused on three aspects: linguistics, content, and format. Regarding linguistics (complexity, organization, style, and predictability), most manuscripts complied, yet issues in structural complexity and organization weakened readability. In terms of content (genre, familiarity, and vocabulary), although genres were appropriate, rapid pacing and indistinct characters diminished developmental familiarity, while cultural vocabulary lacked explanation. Regarding format (length, typography, and layout), manuscript length was generally adequate, but inconsistencies in typography and illustration remained. The study concludes that the manuscripts fail to fully meet the leveling guidelines essential for child-friendly curation.

Abstract

This is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) aimed at enhancing the speaking skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri Satu Atap 3 Dusun Hilir through the implementation of the Role Play method. The background of the study is based on the students' low speaking abilities, which are evident from their shyness, lack of self-confidence, flat intonation, unclear pronunciation, and limited vocabulary. Initial observations revealed that only 25% of the students met the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) of 70, with an average score of 64.63. This situation indicates the necessity for the application of active learning strategies that provide students with opportunities to practice speaking in a pleasant environment. The study is a PTK study that is carried out in two phases and uses the Kemmis and McTaggart design models, conducted over two cycles. Each cycle includes stages of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the study consisted of eight students (5 males and 3 females). Data collection techniques involved observation, speaking ability tests, interviews, and photographic documentation. The assessment instruments covered six aspects: pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary, sentence structure, expression, and courage, with a scoring range of 1–4. Data analysis was performed using both quantitative and qualitative descriptive approach-es, with validity tested through source and technique triangulation. The results of the study indicate that the Role Play method is effective in improving students' speaking abilities. The average score increased from 64.63 (pre-cycle) to 70.63 (cycle I) and 77.38 (cycle II). The percentage of learning completeness also rose from 25% to 62.5%, and then further increased to 87.5%. Qualitatively, students became more courageous, confident, expressive, and capable of using good intonation and pronunciation. Learning activities became more vibrant, collaborative, and aligned with the dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile.  Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Role Play method is a strategic approach to enhance students' speaking skills.

Abstract

Although colonial rule in Southeast Asia has formally ended, sociocultural and psychological wounds persist. If left unaddressed, this trauma can hinder efforts toward regional cohesion, cultural resilience, and sustainable development. This study examines the representation of collective trauma caused by colonialism in Southeast Asian short stories. It draws on Kai Erikson’s concept of collective trauma, postcolonial theory, and Claudio Guillén’s theory of comparative literature. The method employed is systematic content analysis with context-based inference. The primary texts analyzed include: Recuerdos de Patay by Caroline S. Hau (Philippines), Variola by Iksaka Banu (Indonesia), Victoria and Her Kimono by M. Shanmughalingam (Malaysia), and The Interview by Gopal Baratham (Singapore). Data collection was carried out through close reading, note-taking, and analytical observation. The data were analyzed qualitatively using content analysis. The findings reveal various dimensions of postcolonial collective trauma portrayed in the stories, including social disintegration, psychological dislocation, the erosion of communal bonds, intergenerational transmission of trauma, collective identity as victims, and transformations of meaning systems. These findings suggest that literature serves not only as a witness to historical wounds but also as a cultural space for negotiating memory, identity, and healing. In the Southeast Asian context, social healing is essential in shaping regional identity through the understanding of literature and culture.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the prophetic message portrayed through the characters within Kuntowijoyo’s fiction. The focus of the study is limited to the existence of the child and the grandfather and also their relation in conveying the prophetic message. The sources of the data for this study are Kuntowijoyo’s novel along with his fiction collections. Thus, the data are gathered through document collection. Those data are analyzed using an interactive analysis method, which results in simultaneous data collection and analysis. The findings of the study show that: (1) the grandfather character is portrayed as the symbol of the afterlife; (2) the child character symbolizes life itself; (3) the relationship between both characters—the child and the grandfather—can be concluded as a binary opposition. The child, who marks the beginning of life, becomes the emphasis of the grandfather’s symbol as the end of life.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the ideology, linguistic strategies, and social representations that influence people’s behavior and perceptions in online loan advertisement. Using a qualitative approach with Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis method, this study focuses on examining the forms of sentences in online loan advertisements that can shape new ideologies among the public by using linguistic strategies in these advertisements. The research data consists of word, phrases, and clauses that describe strategies and ideologies that can influence people’s behavior. Data collection techniques were carried out using direct observation techniques through three dimensions, namely the text dimension, the discourse practice dimension, and the social reality dimension. The results of the study show that there are five word classes, namely intransitive active verbs, transitive active verbs, nouns, adverbs, and adjectives that describe linguistic strategies, while the description of discourse ideology only uses the noun word class. The four discourse strategies used online loan advertisements are offering relief, guarantees of legality and security, ease of access to loans, and offering quick solutions.AbstrakTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menjabarkan ideologi, strategi linguistik, dan representasi sosial yang mempengaruhi perilaku serta persepsi masyarakat dalam iklan pinjaman online.
